How to add refrigerant to a home air conditioner system. In this video I show how to add refrigerant to a unit that is low on charge. This one also happened to be frozen over so before I could add any refrigerant I had to thaw out the system first.

Jay, I worked as a security Guard at a dead end job for years. I watched your videos on my night shifts so I can learn as much as I could. I felt so confident in what you taught me, I quit my job and went to hvac school in the year 2020. I did so well. P.s. they actually used a lot of your videos for training, especially how to use a multimeter. I watched this video to educate my self... a tech came over and said he does not carry R22 in his van, it is special order, and for the most part he said he would recommend a system flush and replace it with R410 .. a 3 thousand dollar minimum... I got a second opinion, and it was so different, the guy cleaned my coils and topped off a little bit of R22, and Voila, cool as a cucumber... great video, thanks

R22 is really old and the EPA has been phasing it out for years now. Their no longer making it anymore. Once whatever stock is gone its gone. Thats it no more R22.

Thankfully, I have an honest tech that didn’t tell me I needed a new system but suggested filling it and see how long it lasts. I’ve had to add refrigerant every two years. It’s been 10. Filled it today.

ahh, the good ole days lugging up that 22 can on a rope along with the recharge machine and vac. Pump up to the phoenix roofs on a 120 degree day with the tar roofs feeling like 200 degrees and also brazing refrigerant lines. You literally had to take a soaking wet towel with you so you didn't get heat stroke on the roof. Eveything burned lol especially when kneeling down to work. Sucked. But good job showing this vid man. It takes me back.

You only need to study another 15 or twenty years to be proficient. It's a great trade but you need to get licenses and certifications along the way; too many new refrigerants are developed all the time and you have to learn the proper use and applications!

Make sure anyone who comes to "fix" it doesn't just recharges the system. They must find and repair the leak before adding gas.

I've fixed/recharged about 40 units over the past 2 weeks here in addition to my other maintenance duties. I've had to cut a few evaps out, replace them and/or change drain pans and in weeks prior, I retrofitted 2 new systems (evap and condensing units) to existing linesets/ductwork. I still have quite a few things lined up here at the apartment complex I work at. Old units. Lots of overtime. Thanks for the vids!

The HVAC guys at our shop gave me similar advice about adding R-22 to my Sweetheart's system. You are spot on with your advice! No more frozen A-Coil! Comfy in the hot summer weather!

If you are certified to handle refrigerants, you can use R407C as a replacement for R22 and a whole lot cheaper. The R22 around is mostly recycled anyway as its manufacture stopped about 10 years ago!

Not if you do it the way portrayed in this video. This guy stated how it just to basically help the system along until it could be replaced. If you were to add refrigerant your own home system (and want it to actually operate for any length of time) then there is more to it than what this guy has done. If a system is low then there is a reason and that reason (i.e a leak) needs to be addressed. Furthermore an AC system is pretty picky about it's charge level which is why we use certain numbers like superheat and/or subcooling to make certain that we have the correct charge in a system. Just adding until the suction gauge shows above freezing is asking for problems especially if there is already a known leak. If you overcharge and start slugging that compressor than it's going to cost you big time.

Adjust the depressor on your hose so that it’s even or a little below the washer you will never get frost bite again. Also change the washers every 90 days if you are using your gauges every time you do a call.

Thank you - i watched a number of similar video's & this one is by far the most helpful. Just achieved success at my house! Got an extra -8 degrees at the vent! Also - when i removed the protective cap on the red side of the condenser's valve it hissed - there was pressure between the valve & cap - so i bet that's the cause of the leak. This fall / winter i'll vacuume out the refregerant & replace the valve. Thanks a tonne! FYI - i knew there was a leak already because i'd had a pro out 2 years ago & they identified the issue as a leak using all the tools. So in my case, I think it was reasonable for me to use this simpler method. Also, for anyone going to try this after attending KZbin-Uni - it was very helpful for me to write down a list of instructions, things to check and potentially stop / quit ect - instead of trying to go and do it from memory.

They also sell a valve core removal tool that can be used to tighten or replace the valve core while the unit is still under pressure. That way, you won't lose your refrigerant charge.

Before you remove the refrigerant charge, check access points; evaporator and condenser coils as well as all copper connections. Look for signs of oil.

I finally got around to recharging our old (2005) Lennox hp29 today (May 24, 2024) using your method (except I had the R22 tank upside down as seen in one of your later videos). Our electric bill went up in December as our system was using emergency heat and I just sucked up and paid the high electricity bill for a few months (I hate cold weather!!). I purchased a Schrader valve replacement tool and a Yellow Jacket 42004 Manifold with hoses from Amazon. I replaced both high and suction side Schrader valves before charging the system (Did have some pressure when replacing them) since a coworker had a similar leak in his outdoor unit and a HVAC company came out 3 times and tried to charge him over $1000 without fixing the problem and then gave him a quote of $10,000 for a new system!! After charging our system according to your video I then sprayed down the high and suction side fitting "areas" with soap and water solution. I found a slight leak that was on the high pressure side "cap nut?" above the Schrader valve. I GENTLY!! snugged the "cap nut" and finally the leak stopped. Time will tell if this fixed the problem!! I am a small engine technician by trade, but by watching numerous You Tube video's including yours I think my wife is happy with working AC and my wallet should have more money in it now!!!

Where did you buy the R22? Mine was running low and some tech guy came in and charged my wife $1600+ and said he charged 9 pounds F22 and he probably took 15 to 20 minutes to charge. Now I am thinking, he may have cheated us. But On the day the system got charged, the air was measuring 54 degrees F, but now after a week, it is not going down below 58, and it is taking longer time to cool. As it is only one system, the rooms facing west, does not get cooled at all, but the living room is comfortable. Now I am not sure, if the F22 charged was good at all or not. Now the quotes for replacement I received was $15000 to $18000.

@@hssr1894umm…r22 does go bad….it sounds like the A frame under ur furnace where the cooling happens might be needing cleaned off as well…u can tell by how hard the vents are blowing air out…if it’s cold air but barely blowing out if the vents then it’s a blocked up A frame …it’s the coils inside the house that are in the shape of an A …the fan in the furnace area blows over them when it’s on and cooling those coils….mine was blocked up after I painted the inside of my home and didn’t cover the vents thinking the paint wouldn’t be that big of deal…it was …lol…. I’ve had to figure out how all of this stuff works because I’m deemed unworthy due to being a single mom…I refuse to go without ac because I have a medical condition where it’s required…and who are these pros to tell me I can’t have something I need just like everyone else is entitled to expect if they’ve got the $ to pay for it…..but that’s ok….ill do it myself….its a necessity when u own ur home because it sure sounds like u were tipped off big time…unless u have a huge house and several large ac units…9lbs of Freon is an awful lot…..the bigger homes I’ve been in have ac units that require 6lbs max …mine is a smaller unit for about 1000-1500 square ft per floor and it only takes 4 lbs ….u can also see if ur natural gas supplier in ur area services central ac units too and hire them….its similar to natural gas maintenance and I’ve used my local gas company before until the hvac guys had me blacklisted from everything

@@w8what575 - Thanks for your reply. Actually I get a lot of air from the vents. I think it has been the same from past 16 years I have been living here. But recently as the pipes froze up, there was no air. That is when my wife called some local guy, as he was ready to come in same day compared to others who offered only an replacement of HVAC suggestion. My home is around 2000 Sq Ft, and one unit. As know, the vents are not cleaned for decades, as it has a bad design. The A-frame cover cannot be removed until the drain pipe, inlet and return pips are cut off. I have seen the modern ones has a these two panels separated out. So, cleaning is something that cannot be done. But otherwise, the force of air when fan is running or when heater is running, is pretty good. But for AC, it is a little bit low, as the may will be heavy. But otherwise, looks like the HVAC technician has completely cheated me.

@@hssr1894 I had a licensed HVAC technician supplying the R22 and helping me during the process so I could learn it what to look for (On the QUALITY manifold gauges I purchased off Amazon for about $170) with the outdoor temperature of 84 degrees at the time. Why are you using the AC when the outdoor temperature is 58 degrees? I had previously replaced all the outdoor capacitors and major electrical components (except the main control board) in February when it was colder (The compressor start capacitor was corroded and leaking) with no change before I had him help me the other day when it was warmer. The one HVAC technician who first came out for my coworker (January with temps' below freezing) was at his house for about the same time as yours (15-20 minutes) and just topped off the freon and said there were no leaks!! Yeahhhhhh!! His heat pump outdoor unit still froze up after a week! They sent an experienced technician out and he topped off the refrigerant, cleaned the outdoor coil's, moved the outdoor defrost sensor, checked for leaks and a week later his outdoor unit froze up again!! My coworker had enough and is in the same field as mine (small engine technician) and he just sprayed both the valve core areas and found the one Schrader valve was leaking!! He replaced this valve core and had a friend recharge the system (R410A) and after one week the outdoor unit didn't freeze and all was good. My coworker sent a very "nice" email to the HVAC company saying he wasn't paying the over $1000 bill they sent two month's ago for two service calls because the problem wasn't fixed and that he fixed the problem with soap and water solution spray to find the leak!! He has never heard back from them since!!! (He has videos and documentation if they do come back to claim the $) We had the same problem with our system under warranty back in 2008 (That's another long story!!) The day we recharged our outdoor unit recently the high and low pressures were very low ( 50 PSI each) with the QUALITY USA made Yellow Jacket charging manifold I purchased installed (low on refrigerant) last week. We couldn't find the leak until we SLOWLY recharged the system (not 15-20 minutes like your "technician" did.. It was more like an hour!! ) I had to convince my HVAC technician helping me to spray all the area's with a soap and water solution besides just the valve cores I had just replaced to find the leak and that's when we found the stem cap nut leaking which just needed to be tightened "GENTLY!!" I used an adjustable wrench "GENTLY" in two turns to finally stop the leak. Like I said time will tell if this was the only leak. I watched A LOT of You Video's on charging our AC unit. Some are good.. and some are bad. Having a certified HVAC person with me helped

R-22 can be throttled in as a liquid through a restriction device or by bumping the dials on your manifold. Some manifold gauge dials are smoother than others. I have a digital Fieldpiece SMAN460.

IMPORTANT... limit drill depth so as not to accidentally destroy the evap coil!!! That being said, he does not own the system so (technically) drilling ANY unnecessary holes would be destroying another persons property.

@@jotu173 No it wold not. The evap being inside the plenum is an all too common problem. The best course of action during the repair would be to cut an access panel in that plenum not only for your immediate use but also for future maintenance. This is a necessity and well within the scope of work required for the repair that you were HIRED to do.

Great video Jay. I've found on my prior unit that I had to top it off once every two years. It had a super slow leak that two contractors couldn't find and I think it had something to do with most of the leakage happening during the winters. Even dye wasn't traceable. Thats why its important yourself to hire competent HVAC techs that takes measurements and baseline numbers to locate a leak. HANDS YOU THAT INFO- even if you dont understand it. A baseline can determine decay of leak and sometimes determine where the leak is happening. Again why we use non-invasive (NOT STICKING A GAUGE ON THE UNIT-VERY/VERY LAST part of the evulate if at all needed- We can find leaks with out sticking on HVAC guages) diagnosis. Seen more overcharges, resitriction issues then micro leaks. Disagree with putting in a leak detection dye into a refrigerant system-not needed and dyes create another non-condensible - short live your drier filter and or foul your piston, fixed orifice or TXV.

Most HVAC techs don’t want to find and fix leaks. Most (not all) leaks can be soldered and repaired back to almost new condition but then they can’t sell that new unit for $7,000-$10,000 and get that commission check. It’s all about SELLING that NEW unit, or trying to charge you a $500- $1,000 service call for an hour in time and a $25 part. My favorite is the $15 capacitor costing $350 to replace. Freaking criminals.

@@WilliamWBG exactly. had an a/c repair tech come look for $100 and he played the one trick pony replacement game. pretty much convinced me to get some additional tools and repair it myself. because repairing a functional unit myself that is a tiny bit low on refridgerant is about $9k cheaper. and if i mess it up 3x and break a lot of stuff, it's still cheaper. and i get to learn new skills that will be hyper useful to friends and family. harbor freight, here i come.

So, Jay when your in the field do u still use your manifold or do u have a digital or even probes with say MeasuresQuick? When I switched to probes (Fieldpiece joblink)it took a day or two but I never go back to hoses again. Probes are so easy to charge with as well.
