How to refill refrigerant in a home AC or air conditioner. In this video I recharge a R22 unit with refrigerant using the subcooling method. I show the recharge or refill process and explain how to do it properly depending on what metering device the unit has. TXV or other. The AC condenser had a small leak which was fixed before filming the video.

I am so jealous of you and those videos you are posting on KZbin. I have been doing HVAC for over 40 years and my own CO. for the last 20 here in the south. It is so hot in the summer and so many of these houses are on nasty craw spaces. So, it is into the attic on 90+ degree days or into wet bug infested craw spaces in both summer or winter. It is so refreshing to see information on KZbin that is both accurate and helpful to home owners. I wish I would have done what you are doing. Heck, half the techs out here have no where near the knowledge you have. Good job! I only wish you would have been around for the last tech I taught. It would have been so helpful.

Pretty good video. On a TXV system, a sight glass installed in the liquid line right before it enters the indoor coil will help in diagnosis. The sight glass should be clear, indicating there is solid liquid refrigerant entering the metering device, which is necessary for the TXV to do its job. If you see bubbles in the line, it could be from low charge, or a restriction . The subcooling reading is key to telling which of the two you have. High subcooling indicates a restriction. Low subcooling indicates a shortage of refrigerant. To properly top off the charge, add enough refrigerant to clear the sight glass, then add a little more while measuring subcooling. The more you add, the more subcooling you have. You only need enough to prevent the refrigerant from flashing back into a vapor, do to pressure drop in the liquid line.

Thank you for your video! I was was following it and I just recharging my AC from the R22 recovery bottle. I measured the pressure inside the bottle and at the beginning it was 148 psi at outside temperature 84 Fahrenheit. I purged all my hoses red, blue and yellow. I have connected the yellow hose of my R22 charging manifold to the vapor side and placed the tank upside down on the scale. When red and blue hoses were connected (red to the thin high side and blue to the thick low line) and the air conditioner was off I measured on red line 120 PSI and on blue line 115 PSI. When i started the AC, the red line was at 195 PSI and the blue was at 195 PSI. I started to add the R22 refrigerant from the bottle via the blue side vale in small portions and after 20 minutes of charging blue line was at 40 PSI and red was at 210 PSI. After 30 minutes of charging blue line at 46 PSI and red line at 215 psi. What is bothering me is that at the beginning the air temperature inside my house leaving the air duct was at 16.2 degree Celsius and after 30 minutes of my AC charging it was 18.6 degree Celsius. Also I was under impression that the red line pressure will go up after charging and the blue line pressure should actually go down, but in my case it went up instead. Any recommendation what I have done wrongly?

Another very good and useful video. I only ask this as to prevent confusion. Since you knew it was a TEV metering device, why did you need the wet bulb temp as there was no reference to it afterward? Also as a veteran HVAC professional, I would like to see what the “operating superheat” of the TEV was. Typically they are in a range of 9-12 degrees, although this unit is at the manufactures required sub- cooling, the TEV could also be not working correctly or have contributing problems , like a dirty coil or filter. If the unit needs charging: 1. Was there a leak? 2. Always check both the S/H and S/C 3. When charging, purge hoses first. 4. Check the delta T across the coil. Is it 18-20 degrees after about 10 minutes of operation? 5. Is that evaporator coil dirty? 6. Is the condenser coil reasonably clean? We are in the heat transfer business, all these need to be checked if charging ( existing unit repair call) is required. Thanks for the great video.

It was a txv not a tev. He addresses your questions in the description, learn how to comprehend and KZbin.
@wayneschneyer8699
@wayneschneyer8699 2 жыл бұрын
@@rawimpact Hello, Comprehend you say? Ok, the spelling of Thermostatic Expansion-valve gives you the correct TEV! TXV is the colloquial spelling, as Xmas instead of Christmas. Comprehend? He did not explain why when he knew a TEV was installed what the wet bulb temperature reading would afford him. The answer would have been it would show the total load on the evap and aid in knowing what the evap was seeing so when a superheat reading was accomplished, say 9-12 degrees, he would know that the cool was loading appropriately. The delta T would also show that if he found say 16 degrees, the humidity would be indicated in the previous wet bulb reading. As the humidity starts to drop the delta will climb to a desired 18-20 degrees. I do comprehend quite well and my points were correct and valid. Learn to read and comprehend.

If it's an R22 you can just about assume that it's not a TXV. Its also irrelevant. Just charge according to the charge chart on the inside of the cover plate of the condensing unit. Most important thing to do before charging is cleaning both coils and change the filter (sales).Good luck out there my fellow techs. God speed.
@andrewn7101
@andrewn7101 2 жыл бұрын
You forgot a static pressure test for proper fan speed and airflow confirmation through that filter and clean coil. That is the most important thing to confirm, you can’t charge a system correctly without confirming airflow is correct first. Any tech that says a system is over/undercharged without analyzing the airflow is guessing. In this trade, if you’re not testing, you’re guessing.

Hi Jay, if we have a fixed metering device, we will take the superheat measurement and do the exact steps that you showed us, but fill up the R22 freon from the vapor line, is it correct?

Always bleed the lines before adding refrigerant. You don’t want to let any air into the system.

With low loss fitting hoses, no need to as long as you have charge in them, without them, you’re losing charge.

You should invest in some digital gauges. My digital field piece does all the subcooling/superheated calculations and also tells me my line and saturated temperatures. It's Bluetooth and connects to my phone so I can see my pressures from inside the house. Also connects to other digital equipment

Hey Jay, thanks so much for all the great videos, I enjoy watching your channel, I have a question for you. I have an AC unit with oil heat inside, I want to change the AC to the heat pump system, do I have to change the air handling unit inside?
@WordofAdviceTV
@WordofAdviceTV 9 ай бұрын
You're welcome! Yes, a heat pump with an oil furnace as a backup heat source is a valid option. You may have to get a few quotes from different companies though.

I have a 97 TRANE Air Handler and a 2008 Payne Heat Pump system using R22. I do all the required maintenance (timely filter changes, regular A-coil and Condenser cleanings, etc.). Unit works fine but I’m concerned about its age, and availability of parts for this R22 system and if needed, getting it serviced. Should I run it till it stops, or replace?

Is it better to take the wet bulb reading with the A/C off, or already running? My metering device is a fixed capillary tube, so for my purposes, I need to go off of superheat. I take mine using a digital psychrometer through an access plug in the main return duct ahead of the air filter. With the A/C already running, I’ve noticed that this reading tends to be significantly lower (several degrees) than if the blower is just running with the A/C off. This of course would make sense as the A/C will start dehumidifying the air returning to duct. So which of these is considered the proper or prefered way to take the wet bulb for an accurate superheat calculation? My hunch is that the wet bulb is best taken while the system is running. But I could be wrong.
@anticapitalize
@anticapitalize 7 ай бұрын
You take the wet bulb return air reading with the system already running. And the system needs to have been running for around 10 minutes so all the numbers can average out. The point of indoor wet bulb is to include the indoor environmental factors in the total calculation of how the system performance is ultimately able to result in the desired superheat. This requires the system to be running.
