Another big THANKS!! We woke up this morning, Christmas morning no less, to a freezing cold house. My husband had been out trying to decipher the installation manual, but me being a genius went straight to KZbin and found you. Your #1 reason was indeed the answer! We scrubbed it off and are now nice and warm. So thanks again! Getting someone out here on Christmas Day would have been either impossible or cost us an arm/leg for something that took 5 minutes. You are wonderful for putting good out in the world like this, our own Christmas miracle. Hope you and yours are enjoying the day.

You rock! Professor Jay of the HVAC University! I have been dealing with furnace problems without understanding how they work for so many years. The most frequent problem I found is tenants replaced filter but failed to close the panel tightly, causing the door sensor to pop. Can't count how many service calls I've paid where the tech tells me, pushed the panel in, and furnace started working. Honorable mention: Tenant complained the furnace is vibrating so bad that it shook the whole house. Furnace is 30 years old, so the decision is to replace. When the old, trusty (Mars) furnace was removed and sitting on the ground, the problem was clear. A big Target heavy duty plastic bag inside the blower motor. (when they painted the house, the return grid was temporarily removed, the furnace was turned on because it was cold. Furnace sucked in the plastic bag.) I will be watching all of your videos!!!

The safety switch was clutch for me! I spent 1k$ on the control board after the ac person said it was no good. It turns out the control board was OK; the safety switch was not engaging when the panels were closed in which the ac repair person either ignored or did not know to check. Thank you for saving me money! You're the man! I hope someone else will get used to this very detailed video! Cheers!

This is a great video, thanks much. Just watched it for fun tonight after fixing my furnace today. Back in 2008 I replaced my furnace and A/C by myself. It was the rather new (at the time) 410 Freon so I did hire a couple of guys to come out and install the lineset. I saved several thousand dollars. I bought the A/C unit brand new on eBay and it is a 2 stage unit. The seller told me if I wanted to be able to take advantage of the 2 stage feature that I'd have to replace my furnace also. So I bought a two stage furnace and thermostat along with the A/C. Incidentally, the guys that came out to install the lineset told me I did a better job installing all my equipment than a guy who had worked as an installer for their company for 25 years! Anyway the other morning my wife and I both noticed at different times that the blower motor was unusually loud. I already had fixed the "bell end cap" of this motor years ago when the motor failed by replacing a $1.40 thermistor that had burned up and saved myself another $700 or so, (this motor costs $750 just for the part--that was absolutely the cheapest one I could find on the Internet yesterday)!!! Anyway, this morning I decided to take it apart and see if I could figure it out. It was very dirty due to my woodshop in the next room even though we replace the filter constantly. I removed the blower motor/squirrel cage/control board etc. I was in the midst of taking everything apart doing a very thorough cleaning when I came across a piece of paper in the squirrel cage within the fan blade! Turns out, it was the wiring diagram that is supposed to be pasted on the inside wall of the blower compartment. Over the years the glue had failed and it had gotten sucked into the fan which ended up causing the horrid noise we were experiencing! It actually had sounded like a loud truck running right outside of the house but there was No truck there! It's all better now and sounds beautiful, I really need to address the sawdust issue and calm down the constant intake and I'm sure everyone would be happier (including the furnace and A/C). Anyway, sorry for the long winded reply. I had to Vent, but this indeed was a very informative video!

This is the best video I've viewed on troubleshooting your furnace. My furnace went out last week during the winter storm. Of the 5 symptoms you went through, the blower motor, or maybe the flame sensor, describes my symptoms. Because, when my unit turns on, I can hear the usual humming sound for about a minute, then the furnace just shuts off. I called a heating & air guy & he said that I had a cracked heat exchanger & started quoting me a price to install a new unit. I'll get another guy to look test my blower motor first.

Recently, I have begun viewing KZbin videos for help on a variety of subjects but this is the first video that encouraged me to make a comment as well as subscribe to its channel because it saved my family time and money. This video explains typical furnace issues with relatable details all within 20 minutes. I did not have to fast-forward through the video and in fact, found it entertaining. After changing the filter with no results, my husband called out a service provider 2 days before Christmas and they were going to charge $265 just to come out, not including what they would have charged to repair and we could imagine the exploitative costs. The temperature in the house dropped to 53 degrees. I canceled the call and found this video. The furnace featured here is just like our furnace and step by step, I learned a lot and we may never have to call for service again after getting heat in the home again just in time to prepare for Christmas cooking, cleaning, and entertaining of planned as well as surprise guests! This guy is a genius who deserves an award and or television show. I will check out his other videos while I am on my 2-week winter break.

I’m not a tech and wish I had found this channel earlier. Over two winters I had to learn quickly how the furnace works. If anyone is a DIYer, the best way to fix your furnace is to learn the sequence of the furnace’s operation. Then you can troubleshoot the issues quickly. And be familiar with the furnace model to get parts. Great video! Thank you.

I'm a heating technician for Town & Country Heating in Wahpeton North Dakota. I watched your video and it was great! The way you explained things was very clear so that anybody could understand it and get a basic knowledge of how a furnace works and what to look for when they're troubleshooting it. It would be nice if everybody watched it because we get service calls and go out to the house and someone says well I tried turning the switch off and on again which of course clears the codes and they never see the codes before they do that so it's a lot of troubleshooting for us once we get there. Plus if they don't know what they're doing and they watch this video at least he'll know what they shouldn't be doing. Anyway great job! I subscribe to your Channel

I watched several of your videos to help me figure out why my furnace was blowing cold air. The video on the sequence of operation was very informative and helpful. I opened my furnace and look at the dirty filter. Before I did anything else, I changed the filter and called for heat (via my phone to my Nest thermostat). Watched the sequence of operation. It was just as you described. This time, the heat stayed on. Apparently my furnace was overheating because of a dirty filter. Thank you so much for your videos! I want to express a big and sincere thank you for your videos and excellent explanations. It is because of you I was able to fix my furnace myself. It was indeed the flame sensor on my Lennox system. It was short cycling or turning on and off repeatedly. It was such an easy thing to replace and cost less than 50 bucks with shipping (it was an OEM part). I didn't want to go with the 7 dollar ones from amazon after looking at the reviews. It's hard to imagine that little piece was stopping the whole thing from working. I'm on Long Island so the winter hasn't been that cold this season so I took my time learning from your videos. I at first cleaned the sensor but that didn't do it. Anyway, thank you so very much!!!!

I recently purchased a new home, about 8 months ago. The furnace started making noises, like a bumping sound, and then would shut off. Found an extremely dirty air filter in the unit, and replaced control board. So many of the symptoms that were described matched my furnace’s ailments to the letter. I’m trying to learn more about the core of the systems in the house, to avoid excessive repair costs, and being able to troubleshoot issues before a more serious problem occurs. Now, when the furnace kicks on, I can listen to each step of the startup process, and know what it is doing, and how it should sound when it’s doing it. Thanks so much for providing these helpful and useful tutorials! Very much appreciated!

Thank you immensely for this video. It serves as a great reminder of top items to check when experiencing issues with a furnace. We have been having fridged temperatures in Chicagoland the last couple of days, and my furnace has been working almost all the time to try and keep up. However, I noticed there would be periods when the furnace was not turning on, and the temperature inside would drop from 72 to 66 degrees. In my case, it appears the filter needed to be replaced, even though I replaced it last month. I have a higher MERV filter, which might help explain why it got clogged up quickly in a short span and most likely caused a lockout. Please keep up the great work. Providing information on HVAC to homeowners is very beneficial and will help many not be taken advantage of by dishonest HVAC companies.

Thank you 🙏 Thank you 🙏. You’re very throughly. Usually when I find something go bad, I replace it, but the flame sensor is new to me, just clean it and it works. My LED light is solid, no trouble code but the flames came on for about 3 seconds then off, and keep doing that. Lucky I found “Word of Advice” you’re a life saver.

This is a follow-up to my original comment. Just as you said, my problem was the flame sensor that was dirty. Other than the fact that there is very little space in my attic, this was a very easy fix to clean the flame sensor. Thanks to your invaluable knowledge, I learned something and fixed it myself. You are appreciated.

@@misodinamosa the flame sensor is necessarily located close to the burners so it can detect the presence or fire. It’s only about 3 inches long and held in place by 1 or 2 screws. Google it and you may find a photo of one. Good luck.

This is absolutely the most informative and concise video I've found. I simply cannot thank you enough for sharing this video. How much ridiculousness I've had to endure to get here. 🤦🏼‍♀️ Right now, I know my blower motor is fine because the AC was running no problem. I can hear a slight humming noise when I set my thermostat to heat but other than that, nothing happens. But now, I'm gonna see if I can't get a code from that light and have an experienced friend come over to help my troubleshoot. Winter is approaching quite quickly and I don't want to get stuck without heat. Especially because of my son. Thank you again so very much.

Thank you so much for sharing. I am a DIY person when often possible and made useful notes from your video for later when, not if the High-E furnace fails again. With and without repairmen we have seen on our first and second High-E furnaces, a draft fan bearing (unreplaceable) failure for each, pressure sensor failure on one, circuit board failure on each, a burned-through heat exchanger on the first furnace and a dirty flame sensor on one. A circuit board replacement cost me $800 for two repairman trips. For all the money we spent on High-E furnaces I wish we had kept our old fashioned gas furnace that for nearly 40 years needed only a new fan belt, a limit control that cost little money for the part as a simple DIY task to replace and a flame sensor thermocouple. We also have a simple wall gas furnace at another location that has not failed since 1992 and still running fine now on 1-1-22. The old furnace might use more gas but the most important feature is that it did not fail in winter when are nearly all furnace failures are likely to appear. I would have paid nearly about the same for the extra gas instead of the repairs needed for the HIgh-E furnaces and would have skipped the anxiety while waiting for the repairman to show up.
