Does your air conditioner need a hard start kit? If you need some help with it, in this video I show you how to install and wire a SPP6 Hard Start Kit. Here are some of the reasons why you might need to put one in:
- Your AC unit is getting old
- Occasionally trips breaker
- Long refrigerant line sets
- You have multiple air conditioners
- You have a non-bleed TXV metering device
- The compressor is locked up and changing the capacitor didn't help
- If you have a home power generator
- If you have known voltage fluctuation issues
- Lights dim when the air conditioner turns on

Back in the day, almost all AC units had a start capacitor. It does prolong the life of the unit but it will work with just a run capacitor (the silver one) so they decided to cut the "extra part" out. Just like cellphones used to have EMF blockers but since they were expensive, manufacturers decided to cut costs and stop putting them in. 🔋 And here are more capacitor videos for further information if needed: Original Video on Replacing a Capacitor: kzbin.info/www/bejne/eWmVeamYq7Vjbqc How to Replace a Capacitor Full Guide: kzbin.info/www/bejne/b4uql6l5YrWAjbc How to Order The CORRECT Capacitor: kzbin.info/www/bejne/o5zUkoKcq61nl5Y How to Check Capacitor With Multimeter: kzbin.info/www/bejne/a5CTn36jbpljpKM How to Replace a Start Capacitor: kzbin.info/www/bejne/nnSTn3mKZr2Dmas How to Discharge a Capacitor: kzbin.info/www/bejne/ambSi4ukeNGAepI How to Combine Capacitors: kzbin.info/www/bejne/p32tgIqLaJiHfNE What to do if Capacitor is Rusted: kzbin.info/www/bejne/iISsmmdtqt90pqs How to Install SPP6 Hard Start Kit: kzbin.info/www/bejne/ipmlpIV8p8mBn7s How to Install 5-2-1 Hard Start Kit: kzbin.info/www/bejne/gYO0ZHWwf7WDpJI How to Wire A/C Condenser Unit: kzbin.info/www/bejne/gXTEn417qLGJe6s

Not this ac guy. More power to you. Theres no shortage of work. And just to add a reminder he said to make sure thers no coil behind the screw. 100 percent the number 2 thing i see with do it yourselfers. -Charge in the ozone-. Number 2 would be a 30 amp fuse for a 3 amp low voltage, now at the minimum you got a shorted wire in the outdoor unit and a fried transformer. At minimum

My HVAC company installed one when they tested my run capacitor and it was close to dying during my Spring checkup. I don’t know if I really needed a hard start capacitor, but had them install it based on their suggestion and because the compressor was 14 years old. I don’t really notice a difference after it was installed, but I hope it can extend the life of the compressor. Thank you for making this video.

I finally got around to installing a KickStart unit. What a difference!! Should have done it years ago!! The compressor always made a very loud 60 cycle hum when it would start but in recent years it was occasionally cutting in and out when trying to start (it's a scroll). Now, the loud hum is gone, and no more cutting in and out. Perfect! I used the Rectorseal KS1 96506, by the way. Installation was easy.

The two wire hard start you have in your hand has a positive temperature coefficient thermistor under that top cap. Not a potential relay. It opens and closes due to temperature rise and fall, not an electromagnet

Love your videos! Very informative. Open Question for the HVAC Gurus... I know Start performance improvement with a 5-2-1 Hard Start Capacitor Kit is not as great on SCROLL compressors, compared to RECIPROCAL types (many Y.T. vids show reductions of Inrush Amps by as much as 45% after installing a 5-2-1 Kit - I assume these are on Reciprocal compressor units). At best, I've seen only about a 9% reduction in Inrush Amps on my Rheem 5-Ton Scroll Compressor aftter the 5-2-1 Kit was installed. Is this a normal "improvement" to see when matching the 5-2-1 Hard Start kit (biggest capacitor) to a Scroll compressor, or should I be seeing lower Inrush results than this? Install Story/DETAILS, for anyone interested: So, I just installed a CPS 5-2-1 CSRU3 Hard Start KIT in my 7YR old Rheem 5-ton SCROLL compressor/condenser unit, ( was running fine), but was slightly slower, buzzier, and metered with INRUSH Amps a bit above the specification on start-ups, recently. L.R.A. specification for this 5-Ton split unit is: 152.9 Amps. BEFORE 5-2-1 Install... Compressor "C" wire Metered INRUSH = 157.2 Amps. AFTER 5-2-1 Install... Compressor "C" wire Metered INRUSH = 156.1 Amps. Metered several "call for cooling" startups @ 150-155Amps INRUSH, AFTER Install: Best score was 147Amps INRUSH, with most starts hitting 152-155Amps. Disappointed (thinking the 5-2-1 kit was a dud), I metered INRUSH again, a day later, on a few more start-ups - I found that my INRUSH was averaging between 142-146 Amps and the compressor has a more positive start, no buzzy wind-up; lighting in home doesn't dim during start, as before. All wiring terminals checked & re-verified, good. (Same weather, thermostat settings, no other system changes since install day). Odd - I'm unsure why unit seemed to perform better the following day. Thanks for reading!

Hi Thanks for the video, it got my Lenox Unit up and running so far...the unit itself probably went through 3 or 4 cycles after installing the kit and then I heard the compressor start instead of just humming for 5 seconds and shutting off...1st symptom was blowing hot air > Replace Capacitor (no change) ...> Install Hard Start kit and restart , after about 30 minutes the think kicked on and is still JAMMING Thanks Again ! Stay Safe Stay Cool ~

still intermittently failing with buzz when system calls for cold air but does occasionally start and cool ..any comments or ideas ? my thinking is that the thermostat and controls are good , thing is that when it does start up , it sounds like there are 100 little men in there with hammers but it does run and cool

I wish I had known this before Damien Pietak of Superior Air Systems in San Diego charged me $703 to replace mine -- that was $618 for parts plus $85 for a service call. He knew before he showed up that this was the likely problem and he went straight to it. It took him about 10 minutes to test and replace.

That happens to me twice with some plumbing issues, first I was charged a littlemore than $500 for replacing a water hose inside the house, and later above $300 for similar task outside the house, and I said never again. After that every single issue I have I google it, I watch as many video as needed and I fix it myself. Installing dishwasher, fixing plumbing issues, installing 240v circuit, adding new breakers in the electrical panel, troubleshooting AC problems, installing thermostat, installing inlet for generator, etc, etc, etc. My advice: if you feel that you can do it, then you are right. Just invest some time to learn about the topic and you will be ok.

Awesome explanation. My run capacitor is open circuit. Now that I know it is a run capacitor thanks to you, I can just replace it. I was looking for the start kit in my unit and didn't see one, even though it's shown in the schematic. Sounds like I could easily add it and improve things a bit.

This Subco uses a Positive Temperature Coefficient Relay (as stated on their website) not a Potential Relay. Not Good! Only use Hard Start Kits that use a true Potential Relay. The RectorSeal Kickstart (2 wire) and the 5-2-1 Compressor Saver (3 wire) hard start kits use a Potential Relay. I recommend the Kickstart (it uses 2 wires that connect to the Run Capacitor - HERM and COM). But the Compressor Saver is also good (3 wires with one connecting to the common / ground on the Contactor relay). They both work the same way - the Potential Relay detects the pickup voltage (back EMF). This causes the relay to disconnect the start capacitor when the compressor reaches about 75% speed (usually less than a second). Note: Supco does have hard start kits with a Mechanical Potential Relay (Models 3W1, 3W2, & 3W3).

Hi Jay I have a new installed an AC unit the inside and the out side about a year ago. However, a few days ago the condenser unit capacitor failed and unable to start the compressor . I had to replace the capacitor, now working fine. The unit is 3 tone /14 seer and 45/5 capacitor. I also noticed that it doesn’t have hard start capacitor; my question is would it helps to put hard start capacitor to maintain the life of compressor and for easy start. I always watch your video. I exceedingly appreciate you for every education you provided us with. Thank you

I’m just trying to understand in my head how this works....lol Compressors are very specific about what size capacitors is will use. How is it that that the 3 in 1 Supco hard start kit will work for multiple different units that require different size caps to run the compressor. It’s like a one size fits all.
@benjamindees
@benjamindees 4 жыл бұрын
It's really only the run capacitor that needs to be a specific size. The start capacitor just needs to be 'big enough'. So once it is started, the start capacitor is taken out of the circuit by a relay.

I read that a hard start kit must match your system’s tonnage and or compressor HP. So how do we choose the correct hard start kit for our system? Thank you 😊
@jasonpoolo3523
@jasonpoolo3523 2 жыл бұрын
There's a 1,2,3 ton start up and a4, 5 ton startup. Look on your a/c what tonnage it is and choose one or the other. If you live where it's hot get a 3wire kit not a two wire kit.

Can you do a video on how to install 521 hard start with heat sequencer. This is supposed to be the best setup as hard stop kit will provide the boost needed to start the compressor thus reducing amp load which is will be good on you electric bill. And the hest sequencer will allow the condenser fan to start first to free up the refringent and the compressor few seconds later so that the compressor doesnt need to work too hard to get the refringent moving. This also reduces the noise level drasticaly. It's like having a hign end high efficiency unit that runs quite!!!!
