How to completely disassemble a Whirlpool or Kenmore dryer. Roper and Maytag dryers will also come apart in a very similar manner. The hardest part of fixing an appliance is figuring out how it comes apart. Once you are able to unearth the defective part, replacing it is the easy part. If you are working on a gas or electric dryer that looks like mine, this dryer disassembly video will show you how to dismantle it step by step and get to the part you are trying to check.

Thank you! This video just saved me about $900. Disassembly allowed me to find a pencil stuck in the motor. Easy fix, and your video gave me the confidence to just give it a shot, literally as we were about to walk out the door to buy a new dryer at Lowe’s. Keep up the good work!

Thank you! My dryer was running for only about 2-3 minutes at a time and suddenly stopping. After disassembling following your guide I didn't find anything aside from a little lint in the front and no issues with the belt or wiring... then I got to the back. When I removed the lint screen housing I swear to God it was nearly fullat the bottom with lint and random pocket debris (Toothpicks, hair clips, ETC.) so much so that even a vacuum couldn't break it up. After clearing it out and giving it a good wipe it's running better than it has in years.

Theee best dryer repair video ever. I watch about 20 other videos before attempting to change the thermal fuse in my dryer by myself. Your video was the easiest to follow and made the process sooo much easier. With your easy to follow instructions, I was even able to get the drum belt back on ON THE FIRST TRY!!! Thank you sooo much. My dryer works again and I didn't have to spend $400+ on a new dryer!

Well done tutorial on disassembly - I just wish it were for an old Whirlpool/Kenmore gas dryer, but this was a great reference just the same! i wish everyone made dryer tutorials as well as you. My gas dryer that I inherited when I bought the house (a Whirlpool Kenmore) stopped heating so I tested the fuse and sure enough- no continuity, so replaced. Didn't fix it. Began testing all of the other half dozen or so possible components; discovered no continuity in the flame sensor (the coils etc. all tested okay for continuity of proper ohms resistance). As I wait for the part(s) (I also ordered new coils and a few others since I might as well change them out while the dryer is open, further research taught me that if the fuse blows it often means that the flame sensor (or other, but mostly the flame sensor) malfunction caused the thermal fuse to blow. Has this ever been your experience? I hope that when I install the new flame sensor in my gas dryer (and igniter and 2 new coils), it heats again! While I wait for the parts to arrive I cleaned and vacuumed the entire dryer. I never tried to diagnose or fix one of these before, but I know how crappy the new dryers (and especially washers) today are and how short their lives are compared to these old tanks. I appreciate the better heavier duty construction, and most of all- SIMPLICITY of the old school machines where you can see and replace each component separately (there are not that many). The new ones are one or at most two computerized panels/ modules that you have to replace (and pay for) no matter what goes bad. I will avoid that crap as much as I can. Forgive me but I MUCH prefer simple and made well.

Last night I pulled the lint trap while the dryer was running. After cleaning it out, I attempted to reinstall it but accidently bumped a cloth beer can coozie towards the lint trap hole. Of course it sucked it right in and jammed the blower wheel! Your video helped me remove the back and clear the wheel. I cleaned it all out while I was in there and even adjusted the door switch (thats what the coozie was for). Thanks for the help!

45 seconds in and we already get a great tip! For those of you who have a dryer like mine where the top was down really tight, follow this gentleman's directions, but use a screwdriver to pry up the lid a bit, then the putty knife will do the trick. Thanks. I had my dryer fixed in less than five minutes. At least for now! '

#1 Yes! Yes! Yes! Leaving the filter in is important!!! Because, I took it out first (which I saw on another video "... replacing door switch..."). That is why I am had to watch this video so that I can get the power screw adapter (that fell off when I had to change/fit to another size adapter) that fell down the lint filter hole into the back area. Door switch is replaced/fixed and driver turns on (SUCCESS!). Now I am opening the back to find the adapter (...to make sure it didn't fall into an area that can cause harm now that my dryer is working. #2 Thanks for showing that magnetic tray. I didn't know there was such a thing (never thought of it). I have needed that for all of my project screws and nails! Great DIY instruction/tips. Thanks!!!

Thanks especially for the tip about not dropping the screws down the filter slot and the close up on the clips. I was trying to get under the flange instead of over them. My Frigidaire dryer started making a racket a few years ago and I had to replace the bearing that attaches to the center rear of the drum. It's quite a bit different than yours ... it's more of an enclosed drum than a "tube style" drum like what you have (vent is inside the door). The bearing is a round steel ball that rides in a cup. Replaced all of that, the felt strip at the front of the drum, and the belt. Wasn't too difficult at all ... hardest part was cleaning/scraping all the glue residue for the new felt. Bought this dryer and washer set used about 17 years ago and it's still going strong!

Those Frigidaire dryers are indeed quite a bit different with those rear bearings. I have replaced quite a few of those as well. Awesome, thanks for the breakdown. ?: is it typical to get that much crud in the lint area/cavity with normal use or was this the result of a missing lint screen at some point in time perhaps? I feel like taking apart our Kenmore dryer now 😎🤙🏼
@chrisbadger8684
@chrisbadger8684 2 жыл бұрын
A missing lint screen could cause that, but in my experience not cleaning the lint screen regularly is the more likely culprit. As the screen collects more and more lint the airflow through the drier is reduced and gets weaker and weaker till there isn't enough air pressure to move the lint any further.
@WordofAdviceTV
@WordofAdviceTV 2 жыл бұрын
Glad you liked it! 🙂 Yes, it is typical. Almost every time I take out a lint screen housing like that, there is a lot of build up in it. That lint screen does not make the greatest seal and like Chris said, if the lint screen doesn't get cleaned every time, stuff starts getting through. Haha if you haven't taken it apart before there is a high chance yours will look similar to mine in the video. If you go through with it, let us know! 😄

@@WordofAdviceTV Hi Jay - hey, I opened up our Kenmore dryer today. I’d say it’s 25-30years old, still running…the crud in the bottom of the lint chute wasn’t as bad as yours, but it was nice to clean ‘er out thanks to your video! 👏🏻 I’m still surprised that the drum belt is so narrow.

Oh yeah! Most dryers are pretty exciting inside since it's been a long while since they were taken apart. By cutting out do you mean it turns off before completing the final spin?

@@WordofAdviceTV yup it cuts out on the spin cycle just a pool a water left kinda annoying it doesnt do it all the time but i noticed sometimes it happens when the washer is on hot water and not cold water trippy just changed the belt on that boy

Good stuff. To make this easier I remove the door. It removes all the weight from the panel, won’t accidentally fly open, and makes removal and replacement of the panel SO much easier. Holding the drum up through door opening from the inside while aligning the (way lighter) panel onto the bottom hooks is 100% easier and faster. ( for me at least) I’ve only open a dozen or so dryers and each time it’s Only added 10 minutes to the job in total and I get the panel on first time unlike the couple times I did it with the door left on. If someone is not able to muscle the door around or struggling try line up the panel -try it. Let me know if that helps you. I’m curious if I’m an nuts or I figured out something useful 🤔

I dropped a pair of scissors down the lint shoot. I know I can access it from the back. Do I need to remove the top, front or drum first. Or can I just unplug it and remove the back plate? Also, do I need to disconnect gas or just unplug?

You can simply unplug the power cord and that should be enough. Unless for some reason your gas line is super short and you cant pull your dryer out enough to get in there without disconnecting it from the dryer. No need to take the top off, only the back. There are two screws on top that hold the lint screen housing in place though. (Where you slide in the lint screen) You only need to take those two out and everything else you need is in the back.

i have an older Kenmore gas dryer, and my lint trap is up top, and is the pull out kind, KIND OF like yours, except that the lid is ATTACHED to the filter, so i cannot leave it in when i unscrew the metal shroud from it. also, in spite of the lint trap being on the back like yours, my heating element and blower are in the front, not the back, along with the fuses. although the thermostat can be removed/tested from the back, as it passes thru to the front. and are those EGGS in your dryer drum? 🤔

You would only need to take the front panel off and you should be able to get to the lint screen housing.
