It's not your job as a house inspector to diagnose or even try to understand how to fix a furnace. If the furnace doesn't work or it's making loud noises then that would just be written on your report.

I would suggest tech support only for people familiar with furnace & AC trouble. Not for homeowners & doit yourselfers. Experience is your teacher. Not academic instructions. You will blow up something or get shocked almost certainly. Don't mess with these things without experience. Get some from someone before you mess with it.

It was sub-freezing last night. I woke up to a 60 degree house. Immediately looked at and checked the ignitor but it was good(53 ohms) so I checked the LED code which was "gas valve switch open when required to be closed". I went for the inducer motor and the cover was warm and the motor was buzzing. I tried turning the motor by hand but no joy. At one point I touched one of the locknuts and got a nice burn. Checked voltage and it was 124 VAC so I ordered a new OEM Carrier inducer motor assy. Guys like you are a great help to working slobs like me who try to keep costs down. Thank you very much for these videos.

A piece of advice from a 45+ year industrial/ institutional/ commercial tech and service manager. If you like seafood, water, and want a federal pension after 20 years, look into the coast guard. They will send you for training, provide housing, medical, etc. for you AND your family. Make sure to tell recruiter that you want to be in search and rescue - you'll be on US soil. Otherwise you can end up on a cutter somewhere -- Wish somebody would have told me this before I travelled and lived out of a service truck for 40 years

Your videos helped me save my daughter a boatload of money! Her Payne furnace had an inducer motor that was not running at all but spun freely. The motor winding resistance checked out fine, though. I measured the AC voltage feeding the motor and was puzzled when it was only 90V instead of 120V. So I checked the continuity of the two wires feeding the motor. The white wire was 0-ohm, but the black wire was 4M-ohm! Clearly that's not right! Carefully inspecting that wire I discovered a small area where the insulation was very hard and brittle and the copper inside was nearly broken! Cutting out that portion and resoldering/sealing the wire back together fixed the problem! Your step-by-step troubleshooting probably saved my daughter several hundred dollars. Thank you!

Man, your videos are absolutely perfect for my learning style. I run a bed and breakfast out of my 200 year old sandstone house. I'm constantly working on these types of things, but I had ZERO prior experience with HVAC or appliance repair. My approach to repairing such problems has been a combination of a "KZbin education" and a lot of holding my breath hoping the fix worked. Agree, Great video but I think looking at the circuit board To check the flashing error codes should be The first thing you should do. In my case (17 yr old York furnace) the blower wheel inside was disintegrated but the motor was still OK. I discovered that the motor is two stage, proprietary and only sold by York and to technicians. I was able to purchase a single stage motor assembly with same blower wheel and housing and transfer the old motor to it. 😎

You are a BOSS! Thank you. Saved me hours of diagnostic work! Blowing in the pressure switch was a great tip and saved much time than opening up inducer motors box. I cleaned the tubes and the drain box. It was dirty and the water gets slimy which can plug the drain line. I use shop vac and sucked and blew the pvc drain line clean. Littke bleach water will kill that slimy mold build up. Ultimately, my issue was the simplest fix, but the last I checked after nothing else worked and I verified all tubes and drain were clear, pressure switch worked by blowing into it while doing conti uity test with electric meters (you need to steadily keep blowing into pressure switch (top) to keep circuit open (you know because when you stop blowing the cur uit will close and continuity ringing will stop). Anyhow, only thing left to check was that the exhaust pvc pipe (that goes out your roof or side of home). Mine goes out the side of home (furnace in basement). Mine has an elbow. It was -5 F and the moisture in the air blowing out turned to snow! I stuck my fingers in the pipe and it was packed like you shoved a snow ball in there. Cleared it out and back in business! I would not have felt confident enough to diagnosis by going through the steps in video. The video teaches you how it works and makes sense. I'm a DIY guy and I would say I have intermediate skill set.

I used your videos to repair my furnace about 3-5 years ago to replace the inducer motor whose squirrel cage had deteriorated from water after I was gone one winter. It had lasted 20 years since new. I was thankful for your work then and now again since watching this video for the first time, checking the free rotation and pulling the motor assembly only to find that the replacemennt had rotted out in those few years (cheap chinese junk, it seems). thanks, again. I was saved from the house tech appt. that would have cost $145 here in Seattle just to tell me something I found in a few minutes, with your help.

Thanks for all of your detailed furnace troubleshooting videos. They helped me troubleshoot my problem on Christmas Day down to the inducer motor. Obviously there was likely no way I was going to get an inducer motor on Christmas day so per your recommendation I removed the inducer motor and added a little bit of oil, reinstalled the motor and now my furnace is back up and running. Found a warranted used inducer motor online for $50 and it should be here in 2-3 days. Thanks again for your help and I now am a subscriber.

Great clear video. My friend's inducer not only makes a racket but shuts off after a few seconds. Plus power to it seems intermittant. doesn't register voltage when unplugged but will occassionally start when plugged back in. Thanks again for the video.

My furnace kicks in then blower and then off quickly . short cycling i’m guessing. Furnace guy been out three times and scrapes out a port from the inducer port .. if it’s getting clogged must be something going on or in it.. finally said i probsbly need a motor that’s a grand if it does it again. And he followed up there’re a grand so just get a new furnace . It a 93 Goodman lol. I’ve scraped it as well and blew through the pressure switch hose. It a quick fix but now i think it’s getting hot so time for a new furnace

Thanks for your uploading your excellent video which helped me fix my furnace today. I wanted to share my Error 42 experience on my Carrier Infinity 96 (model 58MVP080) so if anyone is facing a similar issue they could try what I did: In my case Error 42 would show 80% of the time with short breaks when the code would disappear for maybe 10 minutes only to reappear - barely keeping the house warm I first checked if it was a water drain issue - cleaned out the white condensate trap (was dirty but no water rushed out of the black wrinkled tube). Tested the two pressure sensors (slight blow on pipe into the sensor with meter on continuity confirmed that both switches were functioning) Everything seemed to point to the ECM Motor but before ordering a (used) one, I ran some tests for Error 42 per the Carrier 58MVC trouble shooting guide (pages 32 and 33) found there was an issue with the RPM feedback line (state 2 was outside the 9.5-10 volts range and showing almost 12 V - same as state 1) - this confirmed that the ECM motor was faulty - got a used replacement today (full inducer with ecm motor) for Can $200 and installed it - finally my furnace is finally fixed and running silently. Lesson learnt : If you're getting Error 42 on your Carrier Infinity 58MVP080 and your ECM motor is turning it doesn't necessarily mean the ECM Motor is working ! (there may be telltale signs like noisy bearings within the ecm motor - mine was making a slightly crunching sound but was turning on all stages) . A number of things can go wrong in what seems like a working inducer (ECM) motor -ts RPM could be in the range not acceptable by the board or there may be a failed electronic component on one of the stages in the circuitry contained (within) the ECM housing

Awesome! Great instructions. Easy to follow. Great pace. I found a chunk of shingle in my inducer fan that was preventing it from turning. (Recent roof work 🙄). That explains why it worked a couple times the first cold day of the fall and then just hummed after that. Pulled off the fan, pulled out the debris, put back the fan and all good! You saved me hundreds of $$ and a weekend of cold, complaining family. I can't thank you enough.

Jay, I've and issue with my shop Hot Dawg HD 45AH0134 manufacture in 2005. It's Inducer fan cycles on, without heat called for! But first, let me say. I'm so glade I found you. I've been watching a number of your furnace videos. I must say you do a fantastic job producing them. Not only clear examples of how to diagnose, but also very well organized on how to and walking through the processes. With very clear video/picture and good explanations of how components work. Thank you so much, I've learned a ton and gain a much better understanding of works of furnace in general. Anyway, let me explain my furnace issue: My furnace works as it should. Except, the inducer motor is cycling on every once in a while, even when no heat called for. Typically inducer runs for 3 to 5 seconds, stop and repeat every 2-3 minutes a few times. Then inducer fan stops cycling, for maybe 1 hour or so, then repeats. I've found, if I cut the 120volt power and or switch Off/ON, small SW at the gas valve (small electrical SW, on valve face). It then cycle less frequently, until after thermostat calls for heat again as part of normal operation of heating cycle. Then, inducer fan cycling becomes more frequent again or seems too, without call for heat. Difficult to say, as I'm not in shop all the time. I've disconnected the thermostat (wires) from control board, no help (Inducer still cycling). Control board has been replaced, with new! No help! I suppose I may have gotten a bad new control board. But nothing changed when installed the new board. FWIW: My control board, does not have LED code lights. My gas valve does have a green LED code light, which blinks a normal operations code at all times. This was a used furnace, when I installed it about 4 years ago. It was and still is, new looking inside and out. It worked, flawlessly first 2 1/2 years or so. This issue (Inducer fan cycling), just began late last winter. Jay, I did hear you mentioned. Control board is #1 cause, You also mentioned you've seen High Limiter and Flame Roll Out SW affect the inducer. I did test High limiter & Flame roll out SW with multimeter normal CL. Which all 3 connected in series. Any thoughts of or suggest will be very welcomed?

I'll add. My one stage inducer motor, power wires come from gas valve. Control board has power wire going to gas valve at multiple points. One point is at same wire housing block, as wires to inducer.

As lucky would have. Someone (Dang) stopping by today, who just happen to be 20 year HVAC repairmen. Walking by my furnace, which I had cover door off exposing the guts. Dang said: "You've a smart gas valve. Those had issues" DING! I've been thinking gas value is my issue. My thinking has been center around: 1#, fluctuation in gas pressure, affecting the internal electronic controls. 2# Fluctuation in household electrical current, causing some electronic interference on the gas valve. He said "they're just troublesome control boards, which are within the gas valve. I'll be tossing in a gas valve.

I checked the exhaust, the pressure switch, the pressure switch hose. Then I came here to check the inducer. I spun the inducer motor until it started spinning freely and the furnace came on!!!! Very informative. Your video is the only source I found as to the issue I have for the first time of every season with my inducer motor not turning on and hung up for about an 1/8 of a turn. It will then spin freely for the entire winter after that first hand spin of the season.

Inducer motor wouldn't turn. Removed motor. Found a Dried up BAT jamed in impeller. Removed BAT reinstalled inducer and Presto heater is back on line. Your video pointed me in the right direction. Thanks for the good video.

Really great videos and guidance. This channel is a lifesaver! Thank you! I've had some issues with my furnace and watched several of your videos multiple times to narrow my problem down. My inducer motor was not turning on. The troubleshooting codes from the LEDs indicated two different problems. Coming off a power-up from power down, a pressure switch code would come up. (three LED flashes). The other code that would come up is an igniter problem code (9 flashes). Through it all, the inducer motor would rarely start to spin. Sometimes (very rarely) it would start to spin and then shut down almost right away. After that, the blower would kick in and it would just run constantly but the burners, would never turn on. I think thi is like a safety routine of some sort. For whatever reason, I started tapping the relays on the control board, and to my surprise I found that by tapping one of the relays i could sort of "trip" the inducer motor into starting. I narrowed the tapping to a single specific relay, and starting tapping it somewhat aggressively. I found that now I could at least get the inducer motor to almost routinely start up by tapping on one of the relays. However, it would shut down almost right away. (I'm guessing the high voltage for the inducer motor latches through this one specific relay, but I'm not 100% sure. ) After tapping the one specific relay and cycling through the inducer motor shutting down and then me powering down the furnace to get it out of its apparent safety routine of running the big blower, (probably about 20 times) I finally got the inducer motor to come on fully, the igniter glowed red, the burners lit, and the furnace started heating up the house again. An important thing to note is that even though I got the error codes relating to the pressure switch and the igniter, I believe these errors were not actually real and the real cause of the problem (intermittent relay) was somehow causing the unrelated error codes. I'm somewhat certain the problem is a sketchy relay that is failing to latch into position. I'll probably order a new board and then keep the old one as a spare and find a new relay to solder in place so the spare is ready for service if need be. I thought I'd share my experience in the hope that maybe someone else can try tapping their relays in the event the problem can't be resolved in relation to some of the more conventional fixes, like an igniter, or a dirty flame sensor, or a shot inducer motor etc.

Awesome video. Had my furnace stop working and it said low pressure switch. Googled around and saw several of your videos. Tried a bunch of solutions (the easiest ones first of course) and finally manned up to get my multimeter out. I wasn't getting voltage at the leads on the inducer side - when I tugged on the wires one of them just fell off. I cut it stripped i and put a new crimp. Worked like a charm. Even though I fixed it - I still watched the rest of this video just because you're great at explaining and I was curios what other troubleshooting techniques there were.

My issue was my furnace was showing a pressure switch issue but the inducer motor was never starting. It wound up being the 2 connectors to the motor. One was loose snd most of the time not allowing power for motor to begin. Your videos have saved me lots of service calls thanks

Very good job. As a retired home inspector, I would have said something about the union inside the cabinet. I do wonder why it's there. There is a union correctly placed on the outside of that cabinet. Again, great job ! Even a novice could follow your video and maybe get their furnace running at least till they could get their guy over to look at it.

Just replaced mine yesterday it was from a Comfortmaker 80 pct. about 20 yrs. old it would make a let's say whistling noise not bad at first then over the last 2 weeks I could even hear it outside the furnace sits on the 1st. floor opposite the door then gradually became louder when I turned the fan it was beginning to sound like it was scraping, well go to plan b fire up the wood burner and let the Tech do his thing, well new motor and so much quieter Great videos
