Steven Strnad Excellent point, Steven. I marvel when I think about, read about, and from my own personal experience, about dogs. Here are creatures who are most content when they have food, a home, a bed, lots of companionship, and a few toys. This is all they need to be content, and to have joy. They really do become a part of the family, if trained well. They certainly would have no idea about money and prestige, and such things would not really interest them. When one gets home after work, the greeting is an expression of energetic joy. I had a dog who would run back and forth in excitement at my arrival at home. Many dogs have a much better sense of priorities than many human beings seem to lack. We could learn a lot from them about what REALLY is important. Unconditional love, for one thing.

I admit I used to watch Joel Osteen some years ago. It was a bad time in my life. We were going through challenges from my step-daughter being abused by her dad and step-mother and the child was removed from the home. Also both my parents passed away. Listening to Joel Osteen made me feel good. After several years, I noticed he doesn't preach the entire gospel. What about when you don't repent? What happens if you disobey God? Why don't you read more of the Bible? I put two plus two together and determined he was a false teacher, preaching a watered-down version. All this was when I was Protestant. I am so thankful to Jesus for showing me the truth in the Catholic Church. I really think He was showing me signs for years, but I was too blind to see them then. I think my chance meeting Mother Angelica was a sign but I missed it. I guess it's better late than never.

I’m a catholic my whole life and I listened to Joel ostensibly too. Never planned to leave my catholic faith. But I was going through a tough time in my life. And I started reading and listening to him. I like how you question what he taught. I started questioning after a few years. Like why does he think prosperity is riches on earth? Why doesn’t he preach about poverty? Jesus lived a poverty life and de well. Why doesn’t he preach the effects of sins. I as well listen to Joyce Meyers. But she is different then Joel. She is more honest and she talks about how God has worked on her in her life. Her ministry is different. I pray for their conversion. Welcome to the catholic faith. Welcome home. God bless. 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻❤️❤️❤️✝️

What happens if you disobey God indeed. Christians believe if you disobey God, or fail to accept Jesus Christ as the Son of God and savior of humankind, that you will spend eternity (forever and ever) in excruciating, never ending agony. Please explain how a just and compassionate God would serve an INFINITE sentence upon a person for committing FINITE, LIMITED sin or wrongdoing? That isn't mercy - that's pure vindictive, spiteful, evil behavior, and yet somehow otherwise thoughtful and intelligent peoplem swallow this garbage belief hook, line, and sinker. God would NEVER punish his creations for making mistakes, even if they flat out denounced him. Are any of you parents? Would you really want your children to suffer forever and ever if they disowned and disavowed you and failed to obey your directives? How can you be more tolerant and forgiving than the perfect creator of all that is who has become all that is? Are you separate from God? If so, then your so-called "God" is a limited entity. Come on, can't you see you are projecting your human ideas about other humans onto God? Jesus Christ.

Why does no one get the context of that when the story says that "Jesus said to the Rich Young Ruler"..................(paraphrased) Story is clear as glass, He said it to ONE person.. and for a reason. What was that reason?
@applejuicejunkie316

@@TheMistysFavs he spoke directly to that one ruler but his lesson was for the many and his disciples. Jesus said he was the Christ, his disciples believed it, and this man claimed to see it in Jesus too. He asked what must he do to inherit eternal life and Jesus said do what the prophets have said, don't commit adultery, don't commit murder, and he said he hadn't done those things. He said the one thing you lack is to sell your possessions and follow him. The Rich man left BECAUSE he had great wealth. He left Jesus, the Son of God, for his money. Several people today leave God to pursue/keep money.
@datuputi777
@datuputi777 4 жыл бұрын
That quote is parallel to how he only said "follow me" to his disciples and they did leave everything behind without the need to be told. Do you believe he would be given such command if Jesus knew he'd do it? Just clarifying this verse. The true verses that spoke of the poor are very specific one was "least of his kin" which is/are Christian's first poor second then the other verse is "I (Jesus) won't be here for long but the poor will live with you forever" this one strikes me the most because not only does this imply poverty would never go away but reinforce what I knew in my heart; that even the most pious only has Jesus in his heart in a moment then the poor (himself) returns and take over.

Thank you for this talk! I happen to be Muslim, and I am always curious to see how other religions view things. I have always found it strange that protestants have this idea that worldly gain is a strong indicator of being in God's favor. Muslims have never really believed this due to this very religious story you mentioned (of Job). We believe that those who are blessed with worldly prosperity are also being tested on how they deal with this (whether they still remain close to God). I have always believed that having wealth is a great test from God because as humans, we tend become arrogant and think we are self sufficient. Wealth ties us to worldly life, and makes us forget about what is to come. I think that this protestant view of prosperity is really woven into American culture (basically that if you are underprivileged, you're not in God's favor).

I'm not religious, but people who have never lived in America should not draw erroneous conclusions about its people. There is the biblical adage that blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Americans give more to charity than anyone in the world. That's why half the world is trying to go there, legally or otherwise. They do not believe that the poor are not in God's favor. There are just a bunch of Instagram people you guys see who aren't religious at all. They do not represent America.

Manila Stud That’s not quite the whole truth. Unlike many of these televangelists, many Catholics built schools and hospitals, serving those in need of an education, and caring for the ill. More recently, the Church began opening homeless shelters, food pantries, prison ministries, and other institutions to assist those in need. Does the Vatican bank need reform? Absolutely! I am oversimplifying things, whole books have written about this in far greater detail. But Pope Francis doesn’t have his own airplane; when he travels, it’s with various airlines. He refused to live in the Papal Apartments, instead, he lives in a hotel room in the Vatican. He doesn’t have a gold ring, or pectoral cross. No fancy red shoes, just his simple black ones. This was nothing new. In Argentina, he did not reside in the mansion, but a simple apartment, and used public transportation to get to his office. Even his chosen name, Francis, is a symbolic hint invoking one of the great reformers of the Church, who embraced poverty. The current pope has done a great deal to strip away the symbols of Pope as monarch. This is something the last few popes have done. John Paul I was the first to reject the idea of a coronation, in favor of a simple installation. No pope since has worn that heavy triple crowned tiara. I have no idea if Francis has ever seen any television broadcast of the acolytes of the prosperity “gospel”, but I doubt he would agree with much of their teachings.

I recently had an insight about prosperity. In the Old Testament, God lists the blessings of following Him. what it boils down to is providence and protection. God warns us that if we step outside His protection (via mortal sin) that we won't enjoy his protection. So many people don't get this and I didn't until last summer when a tragedy befell me and i saw clearly that it was the result of my wandering away. as to providence, it doesn't necessarily mean riches but YOU WILL HAVE WHAT YOU NEED WHEN YOU NEED IT. You'll have better resources that others don't. both of these were shown to me in my life this past year. Praise God!

Heckin memes, ... You say, we cannot turn God into a vending machine. Yet, God is the one who wants to bless us beyond our wildest dreams. God has unlimited power. The only limitations God has are the limitations we put on him. He fed the 5000 with only a few fish and a few loafs. He spoke and 10 lepers were cleansed. He walked on water, he healed the sick, he opened the eyes of the blind. He opened deaf ears. But most of all, he defeated death, hell and the grave. The grave couldn't hold him. Jesus said himself, I have come that you might have life and have it more abundantly. If you think that's talking about an abundant spiritual life, that's ok too, but you're limiting God with that. Remember this law: Your Faith will Never rise above the level of your confession. God will only bless you based on the words that come out of your mouth. The things God wants to do for us, but our theology gets in the way.

Nevertheless He is the source of all things. Everything that any of us has comes from His hand. The question is I guess whether we are grateful recipients or ungrateful takers. Whether we are learning to become creative givers in imitation of Him or whether we just use and destroy the good things that He has given us.

I feel it as being "protected" from wealth. Personally, I chose between wealth and spiritual happiness 18 years ago. And true happiness. As hard as it was to give up wealth, I feel doing so helped me spiritually. Especially since I've watched my family suffer for their prosperity. It's an empty suffering. Not like the spiritual suffering that isn't lonely, or abandoned by Jesus. That's the real difference. Jesus didn't promise to stop us from going through pain and suffering. But, He did promise to send us the Comforter. His Holy Spirit! Keep the faith my friends. And ask for His help. Amen

I remember the first time I heard Joel Osteen on TV and I started weeping. I needed to hear how much God loved me and wanted me happy. At the time, I was at a Calvinist church. I think the prosperity gospel is a natural reaction to the emphasis that Calvinism places on us being "filthy rags". Now I am at Redeemer Presbyterian but lean towards catholic theology. The danger in any church is when there is more emphasis on one part of God's character over another. Many people I know who have left the Catholic Church talk about never hearing about God's grace growing up and many people I know who grew up in other Protestant denominations left because they didn't receive any catechism or "proof" for their faith or knew much about God in general. Thanks for the video :)

I know the Bible inside & out and Joel Osteen last year blew me away with a sermon: David and Mephibosheth. 9 David asked, “Is there anyone still left of the house of Saul to whom I can show kindness for.." Joel had me in tears, poor crippled Mephibosheth, rightful heir to the throne (Jonathan's Son), and David brought him into the King's Palace and gave Mephibosheth his Divine Right. Tears I tell you, TEARS! Joel is great with the restoration, the rags to riches.

Very good points, imho. I am convinced that the clericalism in our RC church has led to an excessive throne-roon mentality, just as it led the Pharisees to make an over-riding fetish of the Sabbath. It saddens me, even after receiving the Sacred Host, to see people almost scared to smile at their fellow-communicants, in acknowledgement of their nature, and their own, too, as at least embryonic 'other Christs', (each one, in God's eyes, if only briefly, the sole centre and entirety of His own universe), in little gestures of courtesy, or acknowledgment of the same extraordinary miracle of blessing He applies to all of us. Also, at the preparatory sign of peace. It was painfulto see the deep hatred on the part of some of the old-timers, brought up under the Tridentine dispensation, at having their personal prayers interrupted - instead of seeing it as turning from Christ to Christ: from Christ by nature to a Christ by adoption. The rest of the Mass would be another matter. I believe we should be largely like soldiers on parade, very recollected and attentive.

I kept that positive outlook, while maintaining my Catholic beliefs. Suffering is inevitable on this earth. However, I just changed my overall view that I can still be positive while having faith in God's plan. I never once saw this positive preaching as a means of gaining financial prosperity. It is the positive view that God will take care of me no matter what happens. I strongly believe that God wants us to be positive because of what He has in store for us.

Maybe I can help, the book of Job tells a story of a man who had alot of favor with God. He had everything, God said that to the devil before he asked God if he can test his faith, only with one condition, you cannot take his life. So the devil killed off his family took his property in a sense and had him laying in sores all over his body. Eventually after hearing it from his three friends saying what you probably would say that you did something wrong for God to put you in this position, God showed up, and reminded him of his faith to let him know that you will not understand everything I do to you. God gave him back everything that he lost and more in some cases. Moral of the story is, just because your going through rough times doesn't mean your doing something wrong in Gods eyes. The Apostles except for one died a horrible death for the faith and endured alot of punishment and persecution. I mean Paul had a thorn on his side that he prayed to get rid of and the answer was no, my grace is sufficient. Pride was the reason it wasn't granted, to keep him from being prideful. How many preachers do we have in the pulpit that exhibit pride, money, doesn't want to talk to his congregation after the service or speaking in tongues which could be the work of the devil without an interpreter. Or tithing which is in its self a scam to get into your wallet, maybe because they don't have enough faith that the Bill's will be paid or they really love money! Kenneth Copeland maybe, Benny Hinn, Joel Osteen, just something to think about.

@bobloblawb2593
@bobloblawb2593 5 жыл бұрын
@@psallen5099 The church is made up of believers in the Lord Jesus Christ Eph 2:19-22 with a foundation of prophets and apostles. If you think apostolic succession was from the time of Peter then you would have a bit of difficulty explaining how so many popes ,elected as apostles , could have so many problems in what they were teaching and doing. Giving magisterial authority to the death penalty, Pope Innocent III required disciples of Peter Waldo seeking reconciliation with the Church to accept the proposition: "The secular power can, without mortal sin, exercise judgment of blood, provided that it punishes with justice, not out of hatred, with prudence, not precipitation." In the high Middle Ages and early modern times the Holy See authorized the Inquisition to turn over heretics to the secular arm for execution. Where do you find an example in the new testament that any apostle handed over a heretic to be executed by the secular crowd? The crusades were not about bringing the gospel to the people in love as the gospel was intended to be. COUNCIL OF TOULOUSE - 1229 A.D. The Council of Toulouse, which met in November of 1229, about the time of the crusade against the Albigensians, set up a special ecclesiastical tribunal, or court, known as the Inquisition (Lat. inquisitio, an inquiry), to search out and try heretics. Perhaps you can find some scriptural basis for getting rid of heretics in scripture as Paul deals with people coming into the church with false doctrine. “…stay there in Ephesus so that you may command certain men not to teach false doctrines any longer nor devote themselves to myths and endless genealogies. These promote controversies rather than God’s work-which is by faith. The goal of this command is love, which comes from a pure heart and a good conscience and a sincere faith. Some have wandered away from these and turned to meaningless talk. They want to be teachers of the law, but htey do not know what they are talking about our what they so confidently affirm.” (1 Tim. 1:3-7) “Some have rejected these [faith and good conscience] and so have shipwrecked their faith. Among them are Hymanaeus and Alexander, whom I have handed over to Satan to be taught not to blaspheme” (1 Tim. 1:19 ,20). “The Spirit clearly says that in later times some will abandon the faith and follow deceiving spirits and things taught by demons. Such teachings come through hypocritical liars, whose consciences have been seared as with a hot iron” (1 Tim. 4:1-2). “If anyone teaches false doctrines and does not agree to the sound instruction of our Lord Jesus Christ and to godly teaching, he is conceited and understands nothing. He has an unhealthy interest in controversies and quarrels about words that result in envy, strife, malicious talk, evil suspicions and constant friction between men of corrupt mind, who have been robbed of the truth and who think that godliness is a means to financial gain” (1 Tim. 6:3-5). “Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs” (1 Tim. 6:10). “What you heard from me, keep as the pattern of sound teaching, with faith and love in Christ Jesus. Guard the good deposit that was entrusted to you-guard it with the help of the Holy Spirit who lives in us” (2 Tim. 1:13-14). Now did Paul hand over a couple people to Satan to be taught not to blasphemy? Yes he did , Did he also condemn them to being burnt at the stake or executed because they were heretics? No, he did not. Yet we have the pope of the roman catholic church doing just that . So Pope Innocent 111 makes a mess of what the gospel is supposed to be and anyone disagreeing with his actions is deemed a heretic. This happens a lot in the roman catholic church and you will find even in the catechism that if you do not believe what is written, you will be anathema / cursed. Now it would be totally unfair if we pick one pope and say that this guy represents the RCC forever. Twenty of the forty-five articles decreed by the Council dealt with heretics and heresy. It ruled in part: Canon 1. We appoint, therefore, that the archbishops and bishops shall swear in one priest, and two or three laymen of good report, or more if they think fit, in every parish, both in and out of cities, who shall diligently, faithfully, and frequently seek out the heretics in those parishes, by searching all houses and subterranean chambers which lie under suspicion. And looking out for appendages or outbuildings, in the roofs themselves, or any other kind of hiding places, all which we direct to be destroyed. Canon 6. Directs that the house in which any heretic shall be found shall be destroyed. ??? Canon 14. We prohibit also that the laity should be permitted to have the books of the Old or New Testament; unless anyone from motive of devotion should wish to have the Psalter or the Breviary for divine offices or the hours of the blessed Virgin; but we most strictly forbid their having any translation of these books. Just how is it that the very church that calls itself the one true church would have a counsel decide that the books of the bible at that time were not for the people but just for a small group of priests? Now somewhere along the line of succession we find Pope Stephen VI (896-897), who had his predecessor Pope Formosus exhumed, tried, de-fingered, briefly reburied, and thrown in the Tiber.[1]:19 Pope John XII (955-964), who gave land to a mistress, murdered several people, and was killed by a man who caught him in bed with his wife. Pope Benedict IX (1032-1044, 1045, 1047-1048), who "sold" the Papacy. Pope Boniface VIII (1294-1303), who is lampooned in Dante's Divine Comedy. Pope Urban VI (1378-1389), who complained that he did not hear enough screaming when Cardinals who had conspired against him were tortured .[1]:153 Pope Alexander VI (1492-1503), a Borgia, who was guilty of nepotism and whose unattended corpse swelled until it could barely fit in a coffin.[1]:204 Pope Leo X (1513-1521), a spendthrift member of the Medici family who once spent 1/7 of his predecessors' reserves on a single ceremony.[1]:218 Pope Clement VII (1523-1534), also a Medici, whose power-politicking with France, Spain, and Germany got Rome sacked. So this should make you wonder how the apostolic succession actually works? Now there have been some truly wonderful Popes as well so we can not just throw them all out because you have some rotten apples in the crowd. You asked about the 5000 +, denominations as to which is the true church , well refer back to Eph 2:19-22 and you will find the true church is the born again believer in the Lord Jesus Christ indwelt by the Holy Spirit. You will find these believers in churches but you do not find them prancing about and saying their particular church is the only one true church. They will be the ones promoting the Gospel of the kingdom, not some organization or a particular denomination.

Study the writings of the early Christians - they are Catholic. Saint Irenaeus 150 AD offered three pillars of Christian orthodoxy: the scriptures, the tradition handed down from the apostles, and the teaching of the apostles' successors. Intrinsic to his writing is that the surest source of Christian guidance is the church of Rome, and he is the earliest surviving witness to recognise all four gospels as essential.

Father Barron, I first just wanted to say thank you. I am not a Catholic (yet at least). I was raised Pentecostal Protestant and spent a good deal of my life searching for God and where I fit spiritually. Though I don't always agree with every single thing you say, through your videos I believe that I've found the spirituality that I'd always been searching for in Catholicism and an immeasurable peace of mind as a Christian. Knowing that the kind of beliefs that I have always personally felt were not just something I made up in my head is a comfort I can't describe. I feel that these videos have helped to reassure me of want I wanted spiritually as a small child and to set me back on the path that I had let the world convince me would be impossible for me growing up. That being said I wanted to ask if the misfortunes that some could be facing on Earth could be part of the purification/cleansing process that our souls have to go through before entering Heaven? I remember reading that we all have to go through this process after we die, but it seems that in the Catholic tradition Nuns, Priests, and Saints go through what most protestants would consider to be extremes to maintain a great level of holiness and spirituality that would be very difficult to achieve otherwise. Is this sort of dedication to God (the forsaking of a lot of the material world and distractions from God in order to achieve a deeper relationship with him) also part of a purification process that might begin here on Earth? I know that the sole purpose for becoming a nun, priest, or a saint isn't extra brownie points in Heaven, but for the ones that do walk closely with God and go through SO MUCH hardship, can that be part of the purification process for them?

Anarie Kennedy There is no "purification process" regarding salvation...but only regarding the maturity and effectiveness of our faith. Hebrews says he "Has made PERFECT FOREVER those who are being made holy" If you are a Christian, and not just religious, when God looks at you, he sees the righteousness of Christ (PERFECTION) and not our sinfullness. There simply is no other way. It says "Seek first the kingdom of God and HIS righteousness..." When you find HIS righteousness, you are perfect in God's eyes!

I hope by now you are already a Catholic :) being a nun or priest is a calling from God.. most are called to get married.. i think it's incomplete to look at religious people as a suffering vocation.. they experience a certain joy that married people don't experience and vice versa.. a vocation is something a person chooses on the basis that they believe that that vocation is where they can best love God.. About suffering here on earth.. i agree with you, i believe it's part of God's way to purify us.. married people or nuns or priest or people who just simply wants to follow God will experience suffering at their vocation... and like i said those suffering were allowed by God and it was allowed out of love.. God bless.

Thanks Padre - the ministry and vocation Christ has placed you in is helping many. TBTG "Unbelievers look for a sign." This is certainly true and a human condition and proclivity in all people. The sign to point to is the Cross not the bank account. When we die, we should have spent our last dime spreading the Gospel by caring for others, family and neighbors.

You have provided the best take on prosperity preaching I have yet to hear. I enjoy the uplifting of some of this type preaching because I find it motivating. Yet at the core, I love God for who he is, for all the pain and suffering I’ve experience I’ve learned to seek the Kingdom, I’ve learned to trust and obey. Ive even learned that while I do not have much by way of materialism; indeed I am prosperous in that I have peace. God provides for my needs when often I have not seen it as possible, money means nothing with out God. Yet I’d be lying if I did not say I would not totally enjoy more of it. Still I’d rather have the love, happiness, peace and joy that comes from having God. Excellent explanation. As the prosperity gurus teach, I believe the Lord is going the bless me in that way. What remains to be determined is whether in this life or what’s to come. God’s will be done, I’ll wait patiently 😇

Thank you Bishop Barronfor giving such a wonderful speech at my daughter’s commencement at Thomas Aquinas College in May! You didn’t have to bring up the subject about the church’s failure/abuse by so many priests, but The fact that you did, and you admonished it, helps me to have faith and our Catholic faith again.

God wants to bless you to the point that others will tremble and glorify Him when they hear and see the kind of prosperity God has given you - Jeremiah 33:9. Jesus said in John 14:13 that When God blessed Solomon with wisdom He added riches to it. when God gives riches to some it is meant to glorify Him for His purpose. prosperity can be used to fund adoption agencies instead of only having abortion agencies, fund, feed & house the poor/needy, save the dolphins, whales, elephants, tigers, eagles, tortured animals like the brown bear used by the chinese for their urine, skinning animals alive for fur coats, closing zoos and sea world to return animals back into the wild and freedom from cages, close down circus' all around the world who abuse animals, hire more protection agencies to protect dogs/cats/animals from abusive families, set up safe houses for the abused women & children, buy more facilities for home key children who run the streets, homes for unwed mother's, biblical Christian counseling for engaged or married couples, facilities to biblically counsel children during their growning up yrs., counseling biblical teachings on how to find individual purpose to serve God in their lives, biblical day care centers for working parents, more counseling and classes for the handicapped/blind/deaf/ill, music rooms set up for children/seniors to learn instrument/song/dance/exercise, set up more walking parks, parks that provide community, organic farming for a township, funds to stop the raping of the amazon forrest, funds to stop the elite from buying up millions of acre's of gov't land for personal gain, funds to stop evil gov't officials, funds for the police/fire dept.. fimds tp change the prison system to one that promotes godly men and women able to work in society's growth, funds to hire men of intelligence and godliness in positions that r now run by ruthless thugs.....barron never told u that God rewarded Job with TWICE the wealth that Job had lost, nor does barron mention ALL the truth's about the financial wealth that God wishes for ALL his people. beware of wolves in sheep's clothing. stop being led astray by twisted words like slick satan always does.

That is such nonsense. We have more historical data concerning Jesus than we do about practically any other figure from the ancient world. What Mr. Chase's statement discloses is only his own prejudice that anything that reports the supernatural cannot be historical.

The biggest crock about this prosperity gospel is these charlatans equate being poor with not being favored by God. That tangible wealth of and by itself is the measure with which they perceive God "winking" at you and being poor as the medic for His scowl at you. Jesus, by their measure would not have been favored by God because He didn't own a palace, had no retinue of bootlickers, didn't own a closet of designer togas and sandals or untold number of chariots and camels. The saddest part of all this is the easiness with which these charlatans have hoodwinked an alarming number of supposed Christians.

It's the inevitable conclusion of the 'Protestant work ethic'. Calvinism taught that Gods grace isn't sufficient to get a place in heaven (The predestined argument) because one has to work for it. Emotionally it fed into 'the earning' economic and material success and inevitably left people feeling incredibly guilty if they weren't engaged in some busyness.
