The Earliest Moments of the Church - Bishop Barron's Sunday Sermon

Friends, on this Fifteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time, our Gospel from the sixth chapter of Mark is Jesus sending the Twelve out on mission. These are the very earliest moments of the Church-in a way, the “pre-Church”-so it’s important for us to pay attention to what the Lord tells them.

I just recently celebrated my 24th anniversary of ordination to the priesthood! Bishop Barron has very much been my mentor through the years although I’ve never met him. I hope some day before I die I can meet him at least once! Primary to thank him!! Thank him for seeing me through dark times as a priest, he has also helped me to preach better with solid catholic theology! There has been a Polish Pope, a German Pope and a South American Pope. We are currently betting on Africa vs North America for the next one (the Bishop may need to be a Cardinal first). I think Robert would be a great Pope! So Frances, it's great to hear someone else say something similar, maybe the Holy Ghost is spreading the word... I see nothing but humility from the Bishop's sermons, so fear not, God's Will will prevail in the end.

Bishop, I have gone out into the world and I'm trying to be a beacon for Christ. I am currently living in Korea where I teach English to kindergartners. I share the good news of Jesus frequently with my co-workers and through my service, love, and prayers for them. Many of them don't know about Easter and God has placed this motivating sorrow within me to help them know Christ and a desire to help them grow their faith. I have a desire for their souls as Mother Teresa had a desire to help those in Calcutta. I know I am lacking in some areas, and I'm not the most social person, but I ask Christ to use me in those areas I'm lacking and to help me to grow. Please pray for me, that the Holy Spirit can use me in ways that each of them can understand and feel the warmth and love of Christ calling them to Him.

I really like the part about "Shake the dust off your feet...." We, believer, know that the gospel is Good. Yet it's so frustrating to see people mock it, reject it, pervert it, or even prevent us to worship (in some countries). I'm from one of those countries by the way. But the Lord shows us through His words that "it's okay.. it's part of "The Cross" that you have to bear when you commit yourself to Me."

I notice this with other bishops as well. If we seek their guidance and writings, it opens up so much for us in our spiritual guidance. We're not limited to just our local parish priests, but we are also flock to our bishop, who is closest in succession to our Pope. I'm in San Francisco archdiocese and our Bishop Salvatorre Cordileone is just as holy and inspiring as Bishop Barron. Reading and watching their teachings is a little more work to look out for, but you can find it if you search for it online and it's usually in their diocese websites as Pastoral Letters, which are letters directed mainly to the faithful within their diocese. I also enjoy Bishop Alexander Sample's work (Abp. of Portland).

The rod warded off predators; the staff was a guiding tool with a hook on one end to secure a sheep around its chest. Only the two tools together provided comfort to the sheep. Not sure why but we don't see many physical healings these days. The Gospel reading just a couple of days ago is even more dramatic about this power: cure the sick, raise the dead, cleanse the lepers and drive out demons. If we witnessed all that. WOW!!

Long before Pentecost, Yeshua shared the Living Power of the Holy Spirit with His 12 Apostles, THAT giving them their dominion over unclean spirits as well as over nature.. that they didn’t understand it all was shown by their inability to command certain spirits. Only through depth of prayer and fasting could certain demon spirits be overwhelmed, as Yeshua then showed them.. As always, your sermons are a blessing to my soul. Thank you Bishop! I wish Christians & “the church” in all its manifestations, would eliminate the hate & negativity towards people who don’t know Christ though. Jesus loved us while we were still in our sins & his spiritual enemies. We do not know who the Holy Spirit will breathe upon. Let’s not hinder His work. I Corinthians 13, as most of us know…the great Love chapter. Verse 13 “Three things will last forever - Faith, Hope, and Love - and the greatest of these is Love.” Yes, we will speak the truth & confront evil…because the devil prowls about, seeking to devour. But there are many people who are his victims, and we must seek to answer their questions - as you do so brilliantly - and show that it is God’s Love which has transformed us.

Dorothy Day in 1976 did not soften her words. Anyone who would not repent probably faced very strong challenges. I really appreciate her words for all of us. I too need to repent. Social media seemed to be poised to brimg society together back in 2006. With time it seems to have confrmed G.K. Chesterton's warnings. Mary, mother of God. Pray for us. The softest prayers are the most powerful in God's Holy Spirit when we openly confess our sins as we ask for forgiveness.
