Friends, we come now to the Second Sunday of Lent, and we’re on both dangerous and very holy ground with the first reading from the twenty-second chapter of Genesis. The ancient Israelites referred to it as the “Akedah,” which means the “binding”: Abraham binds and is ready to sacrifice Isaac at God’s command. It’s hard to imagine another text in the Old Testament that has stirred up more puzzlement and opposition. I am with Søren Kierkegaard: if you don’t experience “fear and trembling” having read this text, you have not been paying attention. And it’s naming something of absolute centrality in the spiritual life.
Mass Readings:
Reading 1 - Gn 22:1-2, 9a, 10-13, 15-18
Psalm - Ps 116:10, 15, 16-17, 18-19
Reading 2 - Rom 8:31b-34
Gospel - Mk 9:2-10

Pls pray for my 13 year old daughter Michel Lim Min En who died on 15 January 2024. She was a clever 13 year old girl, doing very well in school. She had set her alarm clock at 2am, flicker the torch light at 2.30am & 3.30am(which gives a new meaning to our Hail Mary prayer), climb down (?) from the 12 floor service balcony, wearing mask, jacket & socks, carrying a reusable decathlon bag filled with her wallet with money and adult EZ-Link card, notebook that says ‘adventure awaits’, winter mittens, rafia strings, etc possibly at 3.30am. On hindsight, I should have paid attention to the promptings of the Holy Spirit. That something ominous was to happened, but I had disregarded it. She was found lying on the ground floor a distance away with no obvious injuries and in the sleeping St Joseph’s position. As a family we do nightly rosary prayers and the prayer of deliverance from Father Chad. We are trying to make sense of God’s will and purpose in this.

It is such a blessing to directly benefit from this wonderful work of evangelism. This benefit of God I surely love. The greatest gift that God has given me is my faith and my marriage.Three months ago my husband died. I could not have wanted a better husband. We were married for 46 years and every day of our marriage he told me that he loved me. He was the best and now he is gone. We had no children and we were both only children so there is no family. This is a hard test. I will always love my husband. Since his death I have asked myself, who do you love best, God or your husband?" Every morning I ask Our Lord to help me love Him (Father, Son and Holy Spirit) and nothing or no one more than Him. Bishop Barron's sermon today was perfect for me.

My deepest and most heartfelt sympathy. I understand as I am also widowed six years . In my annihilation Christ has lifted me just slightly above the physical world . I have drawn myself into Him as He has done the same . Does it make me jump for joy or put a spring in my step ? No , but , there is a deeper meaning or side to my life now . I walked through the fires of hell with his illness and subsequent death and come out the other side full of scars yet a more compassionate woman . I have grace in my battle .

Similar to thousands of parents having to say goodbye to their children who are emigrating to another country. It's just about happen to my husband and me . Our eldest son and his wife and two teenage sons are leaving South Africa and moving to Grand Cayman. I knew this day would come because so many people are leaving this country due to how badly it has been ruined by the government,. A friend said that South Africa has become the "land of the weeping grandparents"! How true. And how terribly sad! We are devastated because we don't know if we will ever see them again. We can't afford to visit them.

I give a lot of credit to Bishop Barron for presenting what is truly a tough message. As I listened, the idea came to me that he said at the end, that Lent is all about focusing not on desiring God's blessings or what we can get from Him but on God Himself, or, in other words, what we can give to grow in relationship with Him.

This was wonderful and I thank you Bishop! That's the question, 'do we love him more in the good times and less when the going gets rough?' All I have to do is think of what He did for me by suffering and dying on the cross so that my sins would be forgiven. The Stations of the Cross is something that everyone should attend. The first time I went was when I was Saved! I can honestly say that I love Him for Him and have never questioned Him. He is our Creator and only He knows His plan. If I hadn't had Him for all the losses in my life, I wouldn't have made it through.Thank you sweet Jesus! ❤

When I was a Postulant in a Carthusian monastery in the north of Italy, at the entrance to the nuns’ Choir there were two beautiful coloured bass reliefs each side, just after we each tolled the bell for Divine Office. On the left was the Sacrifice of Isaac, and on the right was the sacrifice of the crucified Jesus…..two fathers and two sons. I loved it. Unfortunately that Chartreuse eventually closed down, and when empty for a period was badly vandalised. It was in the Diocese of Pinerolo, and the responsibility of that diocese. I do not know what happened to the building….it was in the 1980’s I think. A heartbreaking sacrilege. It was an ancient church with very beatiful carved and inlaid Choir stalls. +

I'm struck with the connection between the Transfiguration Gospel (Mark) for today and your (Bishop Barron) emphasis on 'claritas' in your writings and talks when you speak of beauty. Today's Gospel emphasizes the power and beauty of the Lord's 'claritas'...are we overtaken by His 'claritas' like Peter, James, and John? May they intercede for us so that we, in prayer like them, see Jesus in full Glory! Thanks and God bless you Bishop Barron for making this and many other connections for us!

When I hear this story I always think about how if God asked someone to sacrifice their son, the test from God would have to be psychologized. Saying you love God more than your child, spouse, parents, friend…ect is one thing, but being told to prove it with sacrificing them would need to be a much longer story than what is presented to us here.

A faithful reading of scripture, both the Old Testament and the New Testament, reveals that we are never given a long story, only the essence. God must have a reason for that, a reason we should be open to because God is God and we are not. I personally feel we can NEVER fully understand God's ways this side of eternity. But that's not necessarily a bad thing. God bless you.

This is one magnificent lesson and reminder which we all need to hear. Catholic friends (and others) send me messages of prayers. Many of them are something to the effect of Dear Jesus take away all my troubles, take away all anxieties and worries, take away all illness that may befall my family…. Afterwards I always think, yes, Jesus is the great healer, we should take our worries to God. The trouble is, their prayers just stop there. I never read “Holy Spirit, fortify me in this trial, but let Gd’s will be done”. Prayers should not exclusively be for “benefits only”. That was not the promise.

This story makes so much sense to me in the light of God speaking through the voice of our conscience. If we go back to I Kings 19 and think about Elijah, he heard God not in the earthquake or the fire, but in the “still small voice”, his conscience. And the same with Jonah who hears the voice of God asking him to go to Nineveh. Jonah refuses to listen to his “conscience” and bad things happen. Just as with those, God speaks to Abraham through his conscience, and what does he ask, but for Abraham to give up everything. We cannot think of giving up anything greater in this world than our own child. Abraham receives the call, that in order to be with God, he must be willing to give up everything, even those things of this world that we hold most dear and precious. “ "If any one comes to me and does not hate his own father and mother and wife and children and brothers and sisters, yes, and even his own life, he cannot be my disciple.” -Luke 14 : 26 Does this mean we become indifferent to everything and everyone in the world? NO! But everything must have its proper place in relation to the Lord. ✌🏻

It helps not to be blindsided. He's always shown me what's coming. He never set me up with a great left hook.

As a father, I'd rather give up my life for my son, and that's probably how Abraham felt when God ask him to do this awful thing.

Thank you Bischop for reminding us, on weekly basis key, deep spiritual lessons. Accepting God's eternal love for us, even if we do not understand it, even if we are blind or death, and regardless of the benefits we can hope from God is a deed spiritual lesson. In other words, utilitarism is not compatible to consider God's love plan for us. We sinners tend to consider our worship for God as a transactional or business-like deal (I give you this if You provide me that). This is deeply wrong .Only a sincere detachment from our egoïstic finite humane condition can help us to really worship God for what He is: the Father with an unconditional love for each one of us Greetings from Brussels,Belgium

"High Octane Philosophy"👌...absolutely!! May i also add dear and most respected Bishop Barron: As is evident throughout ISIAH, this is also the precursor to An Event To Happen...Only that IT IS NOT SIMILAR In just ONE ASPECT...That of THE SON Knowing fully well and truly right from The Start Of JESUS' Mission, that HE Would Indeed Be The Sacrifice...The Lamb Of GOD Who Takes away the sin of the world...i.e., not just the sins of the 'descendents' who will be like the stars in the sky above, but sins of a world that is immersed in sin...in and with His Love❣...through The Salvific Cross Of JESUS✝️ ...and my very dear Rev.Bishop Barron, how appropriately did Your GOD-Given WISDOM connect the "benefits from GOD" as in the soul-searching Book Of Job...again,❣✝️ Notwithstanding the singing of Praises To The LORD GOD ("Blessed Be GOD") when One is Bestowed with 'benefits' in this temporal world, the really meaningful (from One's Heart) expression "Praise The Lord" is manifested only when One sees The "Abundant" Gifts against the backdrop of Them Having Been in spite of One's unworthiness to be recipients of These Gifts Of GOD...Which IS (putting aside what is Job's initial claim of righteousness) what Job gets to understand in the end, thus transforming his "Blessed Be The Lord" into A Manifestation therein of His Truly Loving GOD and NOT just the 'benefits'...❣✝️❣

"Do I love God or the benefits of God?' "Do I love God's will or the benefits from His will??? God have mercy on us.

WOW! What a question and my mind AND heart are, dare I say, convicted. I thank God constantly on a daily basis for whatever good comes my way every moment of the day. And now , IS my gratitude /LOVE based on God’s good benefits to me? I will be discerning all week and beyond!!. Did I thank God when tragedies struck. Not sure I did but I do remember asking, “Why” many times and months afterwards! I know my faith is stronger today because of all of it and I do know I love God, but your reflection Bishop Barron will stick and with God’s Grace, when tragedy comes again, as it may, I will remember to say, I love/trust you Lord even as I don’t understand Why? Thank you Bishop Barron!
