The Shepherd Has Arrived - Bishop Barron's Sunday Sermon

Friends the readings for this Sixteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time are interwoven with each other in a very interesting way. I want to start with the first reading from Jeremiah, then look at the Gospel from Mark, and then circle back to the second reading from Paul’s Letter to the Ephesians, which I think sheds the most light on the thematics here-namely, God’s desire to shepherd his people, and the arrival of the shepherd in Christ.

Love Prophet Jeremiah, “I know your name in your mother’s womb” and God chose him to be a prophet to save the people. Similarly, God has called on clergy and laity to speak on the sanctity of life and sacredness of marriage but few would rise up to the occasion due to political persecution like the time of Jeremiah. Pray for mighty shepherds with moral courage to speak the truth in this time of moral confusion.

The blood of Jesus on the cross has united us. That is a great call to action for the unity of all Christians. Sadly, there are so many non Catholic Christians spewing division and hatred towards Catholics ... and Catholics who fire back in unkind ways. Prayers for the unity of all Christians. As I reflected on these readings, I came to a similar conclusion, that Jesus Christ is the promised Good Shepherd. He leads us to the peace that comes from reconciling us to God, and leads us in the ways of Eternal Life. And listening to this homily had a special touch after I attended Bishop Barron's talk at Lucas Oil Stadium this past Saturday at the NEC. He shepherds in the spirit of the Good Shepherd so that we can set the Word and the World on fire, as he said at the end of his talk. He clearly meant the world but it was slightly amusing that he put in a subtle plug for his own organization.

This reminds me of this scripture from The Gospel of John" They will never follow a stranger, but will run away from him because they do not recognise the voice of strangers". It's so true that natural instrict that draws us, as my natural instinct draws me to the Catholic Church, where I felt comfort that I've never felt anywhere else. As my natural instinct drew me to Jesus when I was just less than 10 years old. As if that natural instinct was a magnet, you just can't resist.

As a shepherd he knows the meadows where we can be free to gaze and rest for he knows our heart desire is pure love and wholeness not perfection. If we let our guards down and let his piercing sword strike our hearts with his holy fire to extract the hurt and sealed the wound with his healing love we would be healed . A contrite heart is only freed when we confess and repent exposing our wounds to Jesus just the way he showed us in the cross while asking for mercy and forgiveness for our sins .
