I feel like he does his scream-singing thing at bad times? Like he starts yelling in parts where it doesn’t really make sense to yell, if that makes sense. It feels awkward sometimes. A very, very stunning performance though!

I was wondering the same. I think it may be that his real emotions are overtaking his characters (being his last night), and it is a way to reset a little bit. Who knows.

​​@@jenniferjohnson5177i think it was because his character is supposed to be having anxiety and have panic attacks sometimes. And idk if it's just me but whenever i have those two, I tend to can't control the volume of my voice, hence people thought I'm just being a brat and is just having a total moody day instead. Also, my other thought is that maybe because it's a musical and sometimes actors tend to overdo such things at times.. Either for the laugh or just to get a reaction from people. This is just my thoughts tho. I could be wrong so pls don't come at me :3

@@Jae_Lily Your point about panic/anxiety is a good one - but the issue is actually something that I have learned from performing music and musical theater myself - the syllables (iambic and trochaic meter) that he chooses are just weird to the ear. It is important to say though that I think Ben is an absolutely incredible performer and vocalist - he is extraordinarily talented. There's just a few odd choices. "NO CORNY JOKES" is one that doesn't align

I think it had a lot to do with it being his last performance as Evan as well. I saw him perform as Evan twice. It was brilliant and beautiful both times and my second time was much closer to his final performance and the emotions were even more and even stronger than the first time I had seen it several months before. I remember thinking - I can't believe that he can pour even more into this while at the same time I realized it had to be so much more emotional knowing he was getting closer to saying goodbye to DEH.... so I can only imagine all that he was feeling during this final performance of this song. Thank you,, Ben Platt. Thank you for giving this to us.
