Before this song, Evan was on the verge of a breakdown. He had an argument with the "ghost" of Connor, or his subconscious. Evan was, in short, done with lying and wanted to tell the truth. Connor was backlashing him by saying that Zoe would hate him and leave him, he'd be alone, and that everyone would think of him as a failure. Regardless Evan defiantly yells that he wants to tell the truth. This is when the real truth gets revealed. Connor says in response "If you want to tell the truth then why are you standing there talking to yourself? Again? You can't even tell yourself the truth. How did you break your arm, Evan?" Evan weakly mumbles that he climbed a tree and fell. Connor replies "Did you fall? Or did you let go?" The truth that Evan really wanted to run away from, was the fact that he was in such a dark place, that he tried to commit suicide over the summer break. He thought that by keeping Connor's memory alive, he could believe that he himself is important and won't be forgotten. All this time he was trying to hide from reality because it hurt. Songs like disappear make so much sense then when you tie it in to Evan's perspective. And in all the songs where he mentions "Falling in a forest- did I even make a sound?", or "do you ever feel like you could fall, and no one would hear?" is the truth trying to surface; but the truth that Evan is trying to bury. Evan here is following through with his wish to tell the truth. He visits Connor's family and lets them know the truth. If you remember the song "waving through a window", Evan says that you should step out of the sun if you keep getting burnt. Here, he's finally done with running. and he finally faces himself and his actions. He asks "How do I step into the sun?" which shows how badly he wants to find himself again because now, he only has himself to face. Sorry for the long comment, I just thought I'd clarify. :)

I dont think thats him following thru with his wish because he wanted to. Hes telling them the truth because he showed connors "suicide note" to alana as an attempt to answer her question "why did connor kill himself suddenly if all the letters say he was doing better" and she got inspired and took it and posted it to the connor page without permission and then everyone started blaming the family cuz of the mention of zoe and "my mom" and then the family starts to fall apart and blame each other and argue so Evan came clean and explained to them it was his letter and everything was made up

The “friends” who he were talking to wasn’t actually his friend, that was Zoe and the father, he revealed to Connor’s family that he lied about the whole story/narrative that him and Connor were friends, that the email was fake, and that Connor’s “suicide note” was actually his letter he wrote to himself

Just wanted to clear this up a little... The is scene is at The Murphys house and he is basically explaining that he lied about the emails and admits that the letter was about him and because he lied he loses them as friends and loses his girlfriend over the fact that he lied. This song makes me cry all the time.

I Came as soon as I heard! And I really think People Should notice more the little line that Evan says: 'Or...Would they hate it too.." If I'm being brutally honest, he's not a "poor guy"... he lied to everyone, lied lied lied, lied himself right into a corner... and when things didn't go his way? He yelled at everyone and made them think THEY were wrong. He distanced himself from everyone, and when he finally realized where he went wrong, it was already far too late. I'm not saying he isn't deserving of forgiveness at all, but what he did wasn't okay. He made a grieving family think false things about their son, then took at all away from them in an instant he told the truth. And while some might argue that he felt pressured into lying, that doesn't justify his actions, and he knows it. Evan Hansen was not a good person, but nobody in this musical was a perfect angel.

The difference here is that we're seeing his character development arc and we never get to see past it. I agree that people can change and maybe in the future he will deserve a level of forgiveness, but at the time of the musical's setting he does not (Also the comment was about Evan, not connor!)

@@evtheweirdo5426 Oh i know- I'm also keeping in mind that the musical is a medium to tell a story, and such- and I believe he id deserve a level of forgiveness- This is an entirely different topic to debate, but personally, you don't always earn forgiveness. Say, you do something bad, Like say something you don't mean that really hurts someone. They instantly regret it. They instantly feel remorse. They know what they did was wrong, already. You punish them, because you want them to learn what they did was wrong- except- they already know. He came forward, feeling remorse, and already knowing what he did was wrong. The guilt of that moment will weigh down on him for the rest of his life. In my eyes, that is punishment enough. I'm not saying the family has no right to be upset, I'm just saying that, in the perspective of 'forgiveness' and if you 'deserve' it, he's been in pain for a long time, and that can't be discarded- and.. I think he's been punished enough.

No, he was talking to connors family : the parents and the sister (zoe, Evans girlfriend ) and telling them that all the emails and memorys he had showed them bout connor were fake. They didn't forgive him. I wouldn't either. The ones that were shelling at him in the previous song (good 4 u) were 3 different people: evans mother, and the friends, Jared and alana.

I'm sorry but I just want to point this out: You should actually watch or just learn about the musical rather than reacting to it immediately. It sometimes bugs me when you don't even know what's happening in the video, since you're new to the musical. Your video just turns out to be a flop, and you try so hard to understand what's going on. It's annoying as well to assume what's happening in the video. I'm not trying to be rude, but this channel had lots of potential. But because of these problems, it becomes particulary irritating for us viewers if you don't even know what you're talking about. I'm not saying this for the sake of our entertainment, but for you to become more known to this particular topic. Bland observations such as "Oh, it's in a school now." or "So, he's talking about the Connor thing?" can easily take away the vibe that the video is portraying. It's just as if you're explaining and mumbling to yourself out of pure confusion. You try so hard to convey emotion or say something, and it ends up just being a mess. Reaction videos are for us to see what you think about the video you are watching, but in this case, it seems as if we need to explain the video for you before you lay out your opinions. Once again, not hating. But it just seems to fail at times.
