Jim Lee is the cool uncle we need, but not the one we deserve right now

In a world where youtubers lightly trace then copy celebrity photos to bluff they have amazing drawing chops... and where thousands of laymen fall for it. One man endeavours to shed light on the bullshit, with genuine style, skill and years of repetition and genuine knowledge. A man who can actually draw without reference, and make it look boss. A man who actually knows good anatomy, simplicity and line weight. That man is Jameson Scott Lee*. aka Jim Lee. He's had enough of the bullshit and is now red pilling the masses one badass sketch at a time. *not actual name.

Thank you for your support to growing artists. You have helped demystify the drawing process and you show a kind and approachable demeanor. You’re like today’s Bob Ross. I’d see a finished painting of his and think it was impossible for me. But as he takes you through it, he showed how anyone given enough practice could do it. You through these streams are doing the same. Thank you for taking the time.

I appreciate what you're doing. To be this long in the business and still have the passion to draw shows that art is timeless, eternal. It forever expands like a ripple in calm waters. There's always room for growth, thus the journey never ends.

Mr. Lee, I appreciate you doing these sessions, because I erase about as much as you. I always felt I wasn't drawing it well enough, but I just need to develop the process best for me. Instead of trying to get perfect the first time. Thanks.

Wisdom, talent and discipline is what makes Jim Lee a master. I have the talent, I hope I get the wisdom and discipline before I'm dead.

I'm with you on this. I don't know why people think it's okay to give unsolicited opinions out of the blue to strangers especially when it comes to art. Thanks for a positive message and being supportive to fellow artists out here.

Mr. Lee you have been my inspiration my whole drawing life. I'm a single father of 2 boys and I work 2 full time jobs and still try to do my own independent comic books. I have just about every book you have done. I wish I could meet you one day and gain more wisdom and understanding of the business. I long to have my comic books on a bigger scale. I'm from Alabama and we don't get a lot of opportunities to be seen or heard. The market is not big in comics here. If you could help me in anyway get out there or give me a shot I would be so grateful!

I idolize this man. Im super critical of my work and think its not as good as the next guy, but this is truely inspiring.

I noticed for me, I go through a drawer's blank. The image is in my head but it just doesn't come out. Other times, it's the opposite. I have a pose, scribble it, and it's done in 30 seconds. Detailed drawing after the finish scribble does take this long - If past painters had the technology of painting on books without blemish, they'd be doing comic books

Thank you Jim. It's hard enough to put your art out there because we are all our own worse critic. But for someone to come a long and bash is stupid.

💯 agree with this.The self destructive doubts/thoughts are already there,sometimes during the whole creative process.No need to add to that..especially when it either wasn’t constructive or asked in the first place.#progressnotperfect

I concur, I think it's rude when someone criticizes a work in progress without you asking.

I agree. It happens to me a lot too lol. I’m streaming and I don’t ask and someone starts saying stuff that are wrong when I’m not even done XD! I allow it when I finished the drawing, but not when I’m in the process of drawing it,

people honestly telling a person who's been in the business for years, how to draw.
@BxBL856 жыл бұрын
Because today there's literally tens of thousands of artists way better than him. Usually those work on feature film, animation and games; payment in Comics is LOW and those great artists just stay away from it.

what are you talking about if you can draw you choose the path you wish to use it for if jim lee wanted he could do animation and animaters don't draw that well they rush they're drawings.

I remember Eric Canete mentioning "critique sandwiches" "They'd start by giving a complement on the art, then segway into a suggestive critique, and end with "but yeah this is great man keep it up"" lol. But for real though if you tell people that their mistakes are fine and to avert critiques you're going to end up with artists ignoring fundamental studies like perspective/anatomy/light on form/etc. It's more of a job vs hobby scenario, but if you plan to pay bills with your art you better be ready to accept criticism wholeheartedly. If an art director says something looks bad and you puff up like a porcupine, your ass is fired and it's back to working at McDonalds.

toobles art director and stranger are 2 different people.
@ineedmorenaruto6 жыл бұрын
Most artists would consider themselves lucky to meet an art director, where are they going to get critiques from until then? I agree with everything Jim is saying, I just don't want to see people misinterpret it and turn into arrogant snowflakes before they even know what 1 point perspective is. I'm only saying this because I didn't take critique well growing up and I'm paying for it now with years of bad habits that I have to throw away if i want to improve, and that's easier said than done.
