I‘m doing fine or… maybe not really, I’m so scared for the characters it’s just so exciting and dangerous and awesome 😭😂 Kal, Adolin, Schallan and Azure are still in… i don’t know the English word, it’s Schadesmar in German… the world of the sprens. And Dalinar is in Urithiru again and he’s in danger and I have a bad feeling about it😂 I think about joining the 17th shard community to have someone to speak about the books before I burst, so yes that’s my emotional situation😂

After the Mistborn trilogy, secrect history, & Warbreaker, I reluctantly introduced we to Way of Kings (knowing it’s harder to get into) She struggled with the first half but burnt through the end & took 2 months to finish WoK altogether. Kaladin calls Dalinar "SIR" rather than "brightlord" because everyone he's ever called brightlord had betrayed/disappointed him. So even though Adolin doesn't know it, when Kaladin calls him brightlord, it's not a sign of respect.

So with Jasnah's resurrection, where Shallan says "you could stab me and I would probably survive", I always read that as when Jasnah "died", she didn't know about how their powers worked properly. She started learning about how Stormlight and stuff works as the book went on. By the time she says that, she's not thinking consciously about Jasnah, and so it doesn't occur to her to doubt it. When Jasnah is first "killed", she completely believes that Jasnah is dead because she doesn't understand the scope of their powers, but by the time she realizes how much power she has, she's not thinking enough about Jasnah to doubt whether Jasnah really died.

The thing with the blade catch is that it is harder to do for normal people, but stormlight increases speed and reaction, so it should be much easier for Kal to do than a normal soldier. I guess Jasnah's original "death" included her vanishing in front of Shallan's eyes. What we don't know is how Shallan reacted to that in the original draft that made the Betareaders think it was too obvious that she wasn't dead and Shallan didn't notice that, but I agree that with the proper reaction on Shallan's part it probably would have been better. Like "That was weird and I have no clue what was going on there, but I can't tell her parents that her daughter vanished into thin air, maybe she soulcast herself? But why?" etc.

To add onto the Jasnah death scene not being as originally intended: at first, Sanderson didn't _want_ to kill and resurrect her, because he didn't want to use that trope, but the book was just refusing to come together well with Jasnah present (you mentioned in the video some ways it'd be different), so he ended up going with killing her because he just NEEDED to get her out for a while.
@curtweston2156
@curtweston2156 3 жыл бұрын
After the Jasnah death scene, when she did not immediately come back, I thought, "Sanderson wants to give Shallan some space to grow and be her own person." Jasnah's presence is just too strong, but she is too good a character to just kill off. Never thought she was dead.
@mordirit8727
@mordirit8727 2 жыл бұрын
What I don't understand is why do it with a death, though. We already knew she was "an Elsecaller" by the time she had her fake death, but the image we had of her second surge was completely fuzzy. If the book was so hard to write with Jasnah in it (and Merph was spot on about how true that is), why not just let it be her power? Shallan could see Jasnah disappear, rationalize she used her other power to do that and just keep it to herself. "Sorry Dalinar and Navani, the ship sank, I lost track of Jasnah and made it to shore. But she is much more resourceful than I am, I'm sure she'll eventually make her way here, hell I expected to find her here already to be honest" and you can both keep Jasnah from stifling Shallan's growth in the book _and_ avoid pretending she died.
@albstare

@@mordirit8727 because then Shallan would probably just be sitting around the Shattered Plains waiting for Jasnah to show up rather than thinking she has to take the initiative to save the world on her own.

One thing that was very touching to me about Shallan was how her desperate need to protect others (similar to Kaladin's) took the form of like, non-magical Lightweaving: setting up her brother with a girlfriend, getting puppies for her slightly psychopathic other brother so he could learn to care for animals, telling funny stories to create the feeling of a happy family: it was creating a beautiful "lie that became true." Yeah it goes too far into annoying coping mechanism territory, but that's also her internal strength and power to heal.
@DoggyP00
@DoggyP00 4 жыл бұрын
Did Shallan know she could heal to that extent when Jasnah was stabbed? I thought that was something she slowly discovered later. The first thing when you discover you have healing powers usually isn't "What people that I know died in the past could have actually survived with this power?"

One thing you guys didnt mention about Jasnah's death is that it was hinted that she didnt really die. When Shallan sees her get stabbed and then goes into her room, its mentioned that as shes crawling she expects to trip over the body but doesnt. Its subtle but indicates that theres more to it than we saw, I remember reading that and wondering if that was supposed to mean she didnt actually die, or at the very least something weird happened.

Kaladin Jumping into the arena is an AMAZING part of the book, but my personal favorite scene is when Shallan reveals her abilities to Dalinar. I don't know why, but I think it's because of the gravity of that reveal to Dalinar.

55:02 I'm of the opposite reasoning regarding Jasnahs "death". Brandon Sanderson made it easy for himself by killing of the only character that would have been able to "fix" everything. He wrote himself into a corner with Jasnah and just threw her over board (pun intended).

Wit is actual perfection, no I am not taking criticism at this time Edit: my thing w the fakeout death here is that I’m mixed on it. The trope itself annoys me, although I do like that Shallan has to figure things out herself. I fully agree, though, on how there should’ve been a shadow of a doubt-either in Shallan’s head, or maybe not making her look so dead. I also agree with Sanderson-I don’t like that he went for more shock value than foreshadowing with this one. However... at the same time, if I’d had even a hint more foreshadowing, the scene between Navani and Shallan grieving together would not have hit as hard. And I love that scene. I do wish there was ACTUALLY something to grieve, but I think Sanderson captured a lot of emotion despite me being skeptical about Jasnah (bc so many authors use this trope). In the end, I’m of two minds with it and I honestly feel like there’s no perfect way to do it, and it’s even more imperfect and divisive than most writing, so I’d always prefer for authors to do something else and just avoid that mess altogether.

As one of the people who don't like Szeth, let me give my perspective. To me Szeth embodies a hypothetical trope Screw Doing What's Right, I'm Following the Rules, and I just hate that. From everything we've seen in the books so far, it seems that there was never a supernatural compulsion on Szeth. The Oathstone was just a rock. The thing that really bound him, it seems, was the deep indoctrination into his religion. Therefore, it appears to me like he's an extreme case of "I was just following orders", except it's framed in a tragically sympathetic light. It's tragic, yes, that he was indoctrinated into all this BS, but Szeth is so "argh!" about it. He has enough sense to see the evil of what he does, but still he unquestioningly clings to the messed up teachings of his religion.

So it’s hinted in the chapter that something fishy is going on with her disappearance. Also wish shallan had put those puzzle pieces together and questioned if jasnah was out there somewhere.

I just finished words of radiance and it was my first read through. And I fully appreciate this video between the two of you. I watch every one of your videos, so it felt like I was taking part in a discussion between friends of this amazing series. My friends, family and husband are not big readers, so I want to gush about books but don't have anyone to do this with. So, thankyou Merphy for this ❤️

I just finished WoR last night and I'm so excited to watch this video now! My favorite scene from the book was the 4 vs 3 duel with Alodin, Kaladin, and Renarin... It was just such an epic fight scene with amazing stakes and I could not stop reading. I'm ready to get into Oathbringer, but should I read Edgedancer first? What is the best order?

I get being bothered by Kal catching the blade, it is a little cheesy, but also, Sanderson's books come off to me a tad, uh, anime-y? But to be fair he probably did have stormlight within him, which at least makes it plausible in universe. I was more irked by just how impulsive he was at the end of the duel, I feel that was a tad forced, a little bit of excessive, uncharacteristic protagonist stupidity to move the plot forward.

Yeah, I hated the whole part after the battle where Kaladin helps Adolin. The battle is so brilliant, and then what happens afterwards just kills me because it's so awkward. I"m just like "Why'd you do Sanderson? Why?" It's so awkward.

Warbreaker review? I mean, since you love it, I’d love to hear your thoughts on it. It took me about half the book to actually invest myself after WOK because I really wanted to keep going with the main Stormlight books. But by the end, I was wanting more of the entire cast. Like your partner, I’m listening to the audiobooks (lots of house projects to fill the time) and I’m working my way through Oathbringer currently. I legit can’t wait to hear how Nightblood ties in. I know it’s a standalone but I seriously love the cast of Warbreaker so I’m really hyped about Nightblood.

WoR is, imo, Brandon’s best work. It is gripping from start to finish. It has incredible moments at the perfect times. Amazing character development, world building, and rising conflict. Absolutely stellar.

Shallan being oblivious about things like jasnah being able to heal with stormlight is an annoying part of her character. The big one for me is that even with what Kal tells her in the cave, she doesn't realize that he killed her brother until someone explicitly points it out to her like 1000 pages later in Oathbringer. She just lies to herself a lot.

Part of that, which we get from Kaladin's POV, is that he didn't say why Amaram did what he did. He just said "lust for a shardblade" and honestly, there are many ways to interpret that other than that Kaladin killed the shardbearer and Amaram murdered the soldiers to hide the theft.

I never truly thought Jasnah was dead. I read the rest of the book knowing, she could be but more importantly that the characters needed to know she was, and so went about their life as such. Her returning at the wasn’t a surprise for me but more like, yup I knew it.

Brandon wouldn't have added that bit about how the body disappeared when Shallan left the room if he didn't intend for there to be some doubt that she was actually dead. And Shallan even reflected back and remembered that the body wasn't't there, so she definitely had some doubt about it at some point.

I appreciate a review so much which focuses on the relationships between our characters. The chasm sequence bonding is one of my all time favorites. The way Kal and Shallan mirror each others' flaws and question their initial judgments was a beautiful read.

I love so much about this book. So many things made me actually cheer out loud while I was reading. My favorites being Kal and Adolin finally becoming friends via the duel storyline and Kal and Shallan’s little buddy-cop journey through the chasms. I’m reading through Oathbringer now and just...gah, I wish these didn’t take three years to come out- I’m too invested!

I finally finished this book and rushed here because I needed to know your reaction too. I agree that the audiobook is incredible. I already have Oathbringer and I can't wait to start it. One thing I thought about over and over again was how not nosy our characters are. If our characters had been in each other's business more, the group would have gotten together so much sooner. If Kaladin had let his suspicion of Shallan guide him (rather than only watch her when she was around Adolin), he would have found out so much sooner than she had powers. Same with Adolin, if he followed his suspicions of Kaladin more closely after his fall with the Assasin, he would have discovered he had powers. If this was a YA novel (please note, I love YA, just saying), the group would have been united near the middle of the novel and not the end. But then we wouldn't have had the amazing scenes with Shallan and Kaladin trapped in the chasms. I loved when Shallan and Kal first meet. And their banter match meeting after was hilarious. I had way more respect for Adolin after finding out he spent time in prison with Kal so he wouldn't be alone. The fight with Adolan and Kal in the arena and the fight between Kal and the Assasin above the highstorm are my favorite battle scenes Sanderson has ever made so far. The arena just because it was exciting. And the battle above the highstorm because it was so epic. The whole thing with Moash made me hurt so much because I cared for him so much. I honestly didn't think it was him. I thought Kal was mistaken and would eventually find out it was someone else. But when we find out it was Moash... oh the betrayal. I kinda predicted that Kal was going to show up on the Shattered Plains for some reason. It just seemed like he needed to be there. And of course, I cheered like a little girl when I realized I was right. I mean he came to Dalinar's rescue before. But everything after that was like one surprise after another. The whole thing with the Everstorm, the Oathgate, and just everything else made for a crazy complicated but awesome ending. Also, I need to know what is going to happen to Adolin. No, my poor Adolin. Deadly consequences to come. Finally, I think Pattern is my favorite spren so far.
