I've had How green was my valley on my to read list for a while since the first video of yours that I watched where you spoke about it. I'm from Kuwait and moved to Wales as an 18 year old to study medicine. I'm now qualified and having lived with the Welsh for 7 very impressionable years I cannot wait to read this book. I sense it will tell me more about every single person I meet and treat in this country as these people have immense historical and cultural pride. I'm almost postponing reading it to heighten the excitement and cherish it even more (you know the feeling). Great video as always.

I've had "How green was my valley" in my wishlist since you first mentioned it quite long ago... I think this book will be right up my alley and I can't wsit to read it. It's quite difficult to find it in Spanish, though, so I'll probably read it in English :)

I love How Green Was My Valley - I still have the sequel to it yet have no cracked it yet as I've heard it is not as good. Also, love East of Eden though have not read it since I was a teenager. It is a massive crime that I have never read Evelyn Waugh especially considering one my favorite authors is Muriel Spark who is always put in the same boat with Waugh. Great post.

How Green Was My Valley sounds right up my street - I have a bit of a thing for Welsh valley novels. Have you tried The Life of Rebecca Jones by Angharad Price? It's a recent book translated from Welsh with a very similar setting, so spare and beautiful. My other favourites are Feet in Chains by Kate Roberts and One Moonlit Night by Caradog Prichard.

I hunted down and bought the Finnish edition of How Green Was My Valley from a secondhand bookstore online. I have had this on my shelf for a month now and I'm quite certain I am going to like it if not love it. I'm just not sure wether to enjoy it as a summer read now...or to save it for a rainy autumn evening..or perhaps a snow storm in the winter :D

My guesses were: 1. A Moveable Feast, by Hemingway (nope) 2. Any John Irving book (technically right, but I didn't get the exact one!) 3. East of Eden (yep! I remember you saying how much you loved this book. I really need to read it!) 4. To Kill a Mockingbird (yep! Guessed this as soon as I saw the Irving book because I remember it being on your list of favorite father-figures video, along with TKaM) 5. Any Bill Bryson book (nope) I'll say 2.5/5 correct, since I didn't really get the John Irving one right.

Kanwar Anand East of Eden is very different from GOW but they do sort of inhabit the same time period and place. Steinbeck has a very distinct style so if that's why you disliked GOW then I would say no. But EOE has an almost American gothic family story to it that has stuck with me for 20 years. It's the only Steinbeck I would recommend.

I'm sorry but I would regret it if I didn't address Your comment, I completely hear You about grapes of wrath but at the same time EAST OF EDEN is a diamond of abook.the audiobook read by Richard Poe is just such a grand listen my personal favorite book and I would feel remiss if I allowed You to not hear full disclosure regarding my feelings for this book. Please give it a chance, grapes of wrath can't even touch east of eden it is completely different from any other Steinbeck I've ever experienced.

WordsofaReader Can I ask (and please don't think I am implying anything, I know how nasty people can be, and how, occasionally, nasty in a subtle fashion - completely sincere) how do you keep your books so crisp? Do you have two copies, or are you just very careful? Advice maybe wasted on me - my copy of Fagles' Iliad is falling apart and held with tape, and that began in earnest on the 4th reading - I'm generally not too concerned, but occasionally I do wish to keep a book in as good condition as possible, always to no avail, so I'm kind of hoping you do have two copies and I don't need to feel such a failure, but if you have a tip or two, do share as it seems especially impressive. P.S. I love Waugh, that good ol proto-fascist reactionary (which is emphatically not the thing I love about him). "Scoop" would be my favourite. Good choices. One last question, and I should warn you, on this I will judge and judge harshly ;) What do you think of P. G. Wodehouse's Psmith books? Anything short of gushing praise shall be viewed askance
