If he's self aware to realize that his anger sometimes causes some serious things, then that's when you make sure you don't put yourself in situations where it could be set off, and you take your butt to therapy or practice anger management techniques. I have mental health issues. I do a plethora of things to make sure that either A: I won't be in situations that can cause problems (mainly for me, as my issues don't affect most other people, but could if I was pushed enough) or B: If I can't avoid/change those situations, I constantly practice different mitigation tactics so that it doesn't spiral should something trigger one of my issues. I also practice self-awareness and mental check in's to see how I'm doing, like if I'm suddenly tired even though I've slept enough, that's a sign that something isn't regulating well or I'm running out of energy. Now, I think society should be more aware and also give a lot better options for people with mental health issues, anything from personality disorders or emotional dysregulation, but it is up to someone else to take those tools and steps to mitigate whatever they deal with.

You should NEVER make plans to “make up” with people that are this unhinged. You put yourself in danger when you do this. While you may have the best intentions at heart, it would be very pertinent to understand that people who fly off the handle like this are often aggressive normally. When someone immediately makes a threat like this, it’s better to simply let that person be handled by the police and then move on. You shouldn’t try to placate unstable people. They are unstable for a reason. If they could easily see sense, they wouldn’t be openly threatening you on social media.

His wife is extremely keen on her ability to even arrange a meeting of some form. I value communication too, and I'll always respect someone that's able to come to the table and talk it out. But her actions here border on naïveté, here. There are certain things someone can do that should have steered her another way, and for her own protection, both in terms of physically and her privacy, I would have never engaged with him. If he'd approached it with something more tame, that's one thing. But the aggression is persona non grata. She should be very careful, going forward.
