The problem with DS9 wasn't even that (although ships not having shields like EVER bothers me to this day), it was dull main characters and slow storyline progression in the first couple of seasons. They basically brought in Worf in 4x01 to stop ratings from dropping. The series shouldn't make me like the writing of the villains more than almost all main characters. The Bloody Cardies(TM) were phenomenal, but they didn't have a good hero to go against them or even outwit them, not counting each other at times.

In cannon it seems Troi and Worf ended it amicably due to his desire to become a monk on Boreth (although I don't think Klingon Monks have to be celibate I'd imagine an alien mate would be frowned on) that was suckered by him siding with the Federation against Gawron in 'Way of the Warrior'. By the next time we see Troi, 'First Contact', she and Riker aren't together but Worf and Jadzia are together by 'Insurrection' Worf has married Jadzia and she has been killed. In fact the leave he was given due to her death is why he can turn up in the film. Troi even mentions Jadzia's death.

The ceremony with the pain sticks most certainly is not a fail. The idea there wasn't to fight or to defeat anyone. The idea was to withstand the pain, which Worf does. Also that one where he starts singing in Klingon right after getting "defeated" was part of a performance, it wasn't a real battle. He was playing a part.
