You 2 are so great. We just bought a fleetwood 40 foot long and love it so now we have to sell our 5th wheel. If you know of anyone that wants a 30 plus cedar creek which is like new it's a 2011. We have taken very good care of it. In 2011 this 5th wheel listed for $64,ooo and selling for $29,000 it's a great buy.

Hi, thanks for answering those questions, it was very helpful. Agree with you regarding money, with reducing your expenses you don't need to make as much. I have some savings and will hopefully be on the road traveling as well soon. It is hard to take the leap, leaving what you know for the unknown but life and time go by too quickly. Really enjoy your videos :) Tina
@ToWanderFreely8 жыл бұрын
Hi, Tina! Yes, I think it is easy to get in the trap of wanting to make more and more just to be able to spend it; but if we can be honest about what we need versus what we want in terms of expenses, the amount we need to make is much less. It has been a big adjustment going from regular salaries back to hourly work. Now, I look at something to purchase and can calculate in my mind how many hours Chris has to work to pay for the item. It gives a whole new perspective on "value". Living in an RV really keeps finances simple, especially if you have no monthly payments - that is our biggest advice - buy something you can afford to avoid paying interest and having a monthly payment. I am so excited for you in your planning stage of hitting the road! Looking back on the time before we left, I remember having the same feelings as you. We decided we would try it for 3 months and see how we liked it. Committing to a smaller time frame was helpful. We loved the 3 months so much that we decided to keep it going! I will be honest with you, there have been times when I have craved something familiar - a familiar grocery store, some familiar faces, some woods like back in PA; but overall the excitement of the open road and the sense of freedom truly do outweigh the few drawbacks. It does take time to make the adjustment for sure, and be patient with yourself during those times. It gets easier, and you will settle in to the lifestyle. We literally had no experience RVing and no idea what we were doing when we left, but you do not have to have everything perfectly in place before you set out. You will learn as you go. We just jumped in all at once, and it worked out fine. Chris has an engineering degree and I was a librarian - you could not get two more straitlaced, plan-oriented people; but with this, we just let it all go. The worst case scenario is that you give up life on the road and go back to normal life - you know what that life is like and can back to it at any time, but this is a chance to do so much more. At this point, I am so used to being on the road that I have no idea how we are going to go to back to normal life! My sincerest best wishes to you in your planning. I hope to be able to see you on the road some day! Sorry for the longest reply in the history of KZbin, but I hope you found some encouragement here. Thanks for watching! Jen

Super videos, real life experience information you guys are putting out there. Very helpful in our planning to RV full time. You mentioned to ask questions, being a techie and wanting build memories by recording our upcoming adventures, what type video camera and audio equipment are you using?
@ToWanderFreely8 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much for the informative review - we appreciate your thoughtful comments. We are also glad to hear that you are planning your own adventures - so exciting! As for our equipment, we are total amateurs. Most of the time for videos, we just use my Samsung Galaxy phone (not the catching on fire version). We also have a DSLR camera, but we usually use that for photos instead of video. This particular video, we filmed with the DSLR, and you can see that the quality is better - plus, we were outside in Arizona, which makes the lighting great. We have no other equipment. I would like to purchase a microphone at some point.

you two are so sweet....it's great that you are so relaxed in front of the camera and with each other. totally relaxing to watch you two interact. my question to you is this: are you using an RV guide for where you decide to settle campground wise? or are you searching for the places on the web, or base your decisions somewhat on what you hear from other travelers? you mention downsizing & living frugally,....which would be one of my biggest obstacles at my age to do, as i have a house load of belongings along with four pets. have you met anyone with cats in their RV's? I have seen dogs, and they are much more adaptable to being on the road. But cats are another matter if they are not car friendly. answer when you get a chance here. no rush. i enjoy seeing your videos. thanks for sharing :)

Thank you! You are so kind. It is definitely easier to do the videos now than we were first started - I can definitely remember feeling awkward. I guess so many months on the road, living in constant change has really allowed us to do away with awkward feelings. We set out wanting to get comfortable being uncomfortable, and the videos are definitely evidence that that is exactly what has happened. Now for your questions...for picking campgrounds, we usually take a look at the Good Sam campground guide or just do a google search for an area. With how much we move, booking campgrounds is a weekly chore and can take up a lot of time if things aren't working out well. We have really run the gamut on campgrounds (beautiful resorts to complete dumps), and nowadays, we try not to spend too much time doing the research. Even if you don't like the campground much, you are only there a few nights; so we try to just take it as it comes. Others will definitely give you suggestions, but your priorities may be completely different from theirs, so it is hard to go off of suggestions. I will say this, our rule is that if I don't feel safe when we get to a campground, then we leave - that has never happened. We have found campgrounds to be very safe with neighborly people, even the campgrounds that look rough on the edges. So, we try not to spend too much time on searching. Yes, we have met several people with cats living in their RVs! Dogs are more common, but cats seem to be doable. We even met a woman with a hedgehog! Some of them even use leashes to walk cats. It worked out just fine for them. Living within your means is important for everyone, whether or not you are RVing. Sometimes we face emergency circumstances with financial consequences that just can't be helped, but I recommend living within your means because I do not want anyone to be a slave to debt. Downsizing was definitely a big part of the picture for us. We had 10 acres and a 3,000 square foot home. When we sold the home, we sold a lot of our stuff with it. That happened before we knew we would be fulltime RVing, but it was a big help in downsizing. From there, we continued to sell things and give them away. By the end, we gave the last of our items to our church for a community giveaway they were having. It was nice to be able to make some money to put toward our travels by selling items, but it was so much more rewarding to give the items to people who needed them. Well, I hope I didn't ramble on to much! I hope my answers for helpful for you. So glad you are enjoying the videos, and please send any other questions you have! Thanks for watching! - Jen

Hey Chris and Jen- thank you for your informative video(s). As far as I'm concerned, you and others who vlog about your lives on the road are the ones who are giving us the real "Reality TV". Thanks for your transparency and courage in not only heading out on the road but sharing your lives with us. Chris- I too was a draftsman but at a time when the only media to draw on was vellum and linen and thank goodness it has changed to CAD so you wouldn't have to bring the drawing table with you. Anyway ... to the question- do you use any online backup service for your work files like Dropbox or Onedrive or perhaps Carbonite? I have terabytes of files and would hate to lose them if there was a catastrophe on the road. Thanks!

Great question, but one that is complicated to answer. Chris does his actual work using software - he only needs the internet to communicate with clients. Most RV parks do have internet, but its reliability is always questionable. If you need 40 hours of internet a week for work, then you will be limited on where you can stay. You may want to look in to something like the Verizon Jet Pack for more guaranteed options. If you are planning on doing a lot of traveling, then the jet pack or something similar may be a better option. Hope that is helpful.

How do you keep up with your autoimmune disease on the road? I have SLE and I see my dr on a monthly basis and have another set appointment at the hospital every 21 days. How do you handle all of your medical stuff. Plus keeping up with your prescription management. Also, I see pain management for refills on my pain pump. That's another set appointment about every 3 months.
@ToWanderFreely8 жыл бұрын
This is a very complicated question, but I will try to keep my answer concise. 4 or 5 years ago, we would not have even considered traveling like this. I decided to switch to a natural approach, and that made a huge difference for us. I am gluten, dairy, sugar and gmo free. I try to only eat wild caught or pastured meat and stay as organic as possible. I have also incorporated daily light exercise, detoxing, supplements, herbs and essential oils in to my routine. I make my own non-toxic cleaners and personal care products. I have an integrative doctor, who I now do phone appointments with. Also, he just sends me scripts for bloodwork, and I have them done wherever I am. Once I had seen so many improvements with the changes I made; that is when we started to think of RVing as an option. My biggest concern going in to it was being able to find the food I needed, and I am happy to report that it has been easier than I anticipated. With a small freezer, it is much harder to stock up on appropriate meats for me, but we have been able to work it out so that I get what I need. At home, I was able to work with farmers and get a good deal on butchering day and organic produce cheaply. Now, we pay more for our groceries since we are more dependent on natural stores, etc. I hope that is helpful.

We are retired and don't have to work to maintain our life style, however, we aren't rich but that's okay because we don't try to live that way. I would love to live in an RV full time but my wife is a bit reluctant. One of the issues for her is money because we have no idea what it cost. Can a couple live comfortably with $4,000 per month to spend? I realize the expense of actual travel time wold have an impact on that but I don't think we'd be underway that often. I think we'd tend to find a nice RV park and tend to hole up for a month or two at a time. I have no idea what a nice RV park costs and I don't want to boon dock or live in a Walmart parking lot. We'd have no debt to worry about so the $4,000 would go toward just living. Thanks.
@ToWanderFreely8 жыл бұрын
Hi, Amos. Yes, I think that you could afford it within that budget for sure. We compiled our cost after one full year on the road, and we averaged $33.29 per night at RV parks (approx. 98% of which were full hookups). We move a lot, so we are not able to take advantage of weekly and monthly rates. Also, we were in California for an entire month, which is much more expensive than any of the other 30+ states we have been in. If you stay off the coasts, you will make out with better rates. The beauty of RVing is that you have more control over your expenses. You get to choose how much you want to pay for rent each month. I hope this information is helpful. Please feel free to ask any other questions.

@ToWanderFreely6 жыл бұрын
Congrats on fulltiming! Fortunately, our brother-in-law volunteered to handle our mail for us. We used their house as our home address. He would also deposit checks for us. Since Chris runs his own business, direct deposit is not an option, and paypal fees are just too expensive. Plus, his professional clients want to write a check, and we try to accommodate them as best as possible. When we started, we were hoping to make it 3 months, so the idea of doing a mail service just seemed like a hassle for a short time. But, we loved RVing so much, that we were fulltimers for 3 years! The BIL didn't mind, so he was our mail solution. Hope that helps! And again, a huge congratulations to you - it is a big undertaking jumping in to fulltiming, but it is one of the best decisions we have ever made. We wish you all the best!

Would you guys please provide the price of the camp grounds you stay in? Thanks!
@ToWanderFreely8 жыл бұрын
I will certainly try! Keep in mind that some depend on the type of spot you need, the length of stay, and seasonal prices, so don't think that the price we pay would have to be the same price you would pay. Thanks for the feedback! For Rancho Sonora, we were in their off season, and we paid $225 for the week. The owner really liked us, so she let my sister and her husband stay with us for free (typically there is like a $5 charge per person per night at most campgrounds when you go above 2 people). Also, we liked it so much that we stayed a few extra days, and she gave us the night rate for a weekly stay in stead of the typical night stay rate. We never ask for discounts, it is just not part of our personalities, for better or worse. We believe in value, so I wouldn't ask for something for free. She kindly offered, and we brought her a bouquet of flowers our last day to show how much her kindness meant. It is always helpful to be good campers too - clean up after yourself and be considerate. That is how we were both raised, so we always live that way including at campgrounds; but you would be surprised how many people wreck a site before they leave it. Hope that is helpful, and I will try to remember to put prices in our videos/posts. Thanks again.

Unfortunately, I do not. Healthcare is so complicated and expensive. When we first set out, we qualified for Obamacare, but it was way too expensive. We went with a short-term plan that was a fraction of the cost and still had better overall benefits. However, short-term plans aren't a great option either, so I can't really recommend them for most people. I wish I could be more helpful.

@ToWanderFreely8 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the feedback! We are just about at one year on the road, and we are looking at making around 40% of what we were previously. Chris' work is sporadic, so there are some months that he makes no money, and then others are big months. Having some savings on hand is a must for our situation, which is why we did not go for broke on purchasing our RV and vehicle. We absolutely recommend purchasing something you can afford and not having monthly payments on the road. Also, we have made a commitment to not touch our retirement savings - if it gets to that point, then we will be giving up life on the road. Here is the way we see it: Worst case scenario = fulltime rving doesn't work out and you go back to a normal life. But, you already know that life - this is a chance to know a different life. Search your hearts for your motivations and if the only thing holding you back is money, then please know that money is something that can be flexible on the road. (If there are other reasons, that is for the two of you to find and resolve.) With our one year anniversary coming up, I am going to work on putting together the actual costs for one year on the road - hopefully getting a better feel for the cost will help you decided where you stand. I hope this is helpful, and like I said, I will be doing another video soon about cost. Our sincerest best wishes to you. Please feel free to ask any questions, you can also email us at towanderfreely@gmail

Hi, there! We went from Chris having a fulltime income (with a small side business that only had 1 client) and I worked part -time; to just his side business. I believe our income dropped over 50%, but so did our actual work hours as well. It was a big risk at the time, but we had faith. This past winter, we spent time back in PA for multiple reasons but one was to build the business, since we have decided to make Nittany Design (Chris' business) a fulltime income. We have been blessed over the winter with new clients, and we are on track this year to make more money than we ever did previously. The problem with owning your own business, is that you can't be sure from month to month what your income will be; but 2017 is looking very good for us. In the meantime, I am generating some income as well thru our website & calendar product - not a lot, but it is work I enjoy doing so that is worth it to me! :) Will you have your own business? Is your income reliable? We definitely took a risk, and I don't want to scare anyone away from taking a risk; but at the same time, we worked hard to build the business too so that the risk would pay off. I hope that is helpful. Please feel free to ask any other questions, or you can email them to us at towanderfreely@gmail.com if you would feel more comfortable discussing it thru email. Thanks for watching!

Grew up in Perry County, currently in Newville, just south of Carlisle. Love your channel. My family just got a class c, 31' coachmen leprechaun. So, we are new to RV's and learning alot! Just took it to Yellowstone and Mt. Rushmore. :)

Thanks, Kevin! I have some relatives in Perry County, and my sister and her husband moved to Duncannon recently. That's awesome that you have a leprechaun - I love seeing them on the road. What a great start too - Yellowstone & Rushmore!!! Congratulations! Glad you are enjoying our channel. -Jen

Hey Jen, question for you. Would you and Chris like to have a theme song for your channel? I am a musician and own a recording studio out of my home. I would love to do that for you guys. You won't hurt any feelings if you decide not to use it but let me know if that is something you would like to try. :)

Wow, Kevin! We are really honored that you would consider it! I have to be honest with you and let you know that I really do not have anything extra in the budget right now to be able to afford that, but we would absolutely consider it once we do have some extra money. Right now, I am just trying to make enough money through the channel to afford keeping my blog going; but I am just starting out, so that may be an option in the future. May I please take a raincheck on that? And please be assured that we appreciate your willingness and talent.

Totally irrelevant comment but you sound just like Michael Keaton. The original Batman.
