The 1998-built 44,000 DWT large bulk carrier, MV Benita, ran aground on 17 June 2016 off Mahebourg, Mauritius after losing all power in her engine room.
While in ballast and carrying only bunker fuel, a small oil spill occurred during the grounding.
SPO's subsidiary company, Swire Emergency Response (SER) team supported the international salvage company, Five Oceans Salvage, in what was an exceptionally geographically challenging area, coordinating the oil spill response operations. The vessel was successfully re-floated on 23 July 2016.
