Generally speaking, we would lunge the horse first, then work in hand and then mount up. If at any point you can't get the horse to move away from the leg, simply dismount and work in hand again.

I absolutely love that you are all about sharing your knowledge, Mr. Faerber! Since you are on the west coast, and I am on the east...I can't personally access you. But, I am so very grateful that you are eager to assist those of us who love our horses and want to be fair and good owners! Thank you!!! I'll be using this technique tonight on my horse! He is very much in need of understanding how to leg yield, what contact is, etc. He's transitioning from barrel racing (LOL), to hunter/jumper. I've only had him since October, and we've come a long way, but we have much more to do! And...I haven't owned a horse for five years; I've moved to a new state, away from my trainer; so, yeah...been trying to do a lot on my own, while scoping out a good trainer, who's also affordable!! Yikes!

Thank you for the video. I would like to know if you agree on the fact that work in hand could be used in many other circumstances and not only to teach the horse to move off the isolated leg. For example, I used it successfully to teach a horse to be in a frame at the walk, or during walk-trot, walk-halt transitions, without the weight of the rider. Also, Gen. Decarpetry suggests work in hand, among many other applications, to teach the horse to move forward promptly, that is to improve the response to the leg. When should one use this technique? Before mounting the horse and riding? And should a rider warm up a horse on a lunge line before attempting this and riding afterwards (ex.if the horse is very young)? I admire your techniques, I wish you could come to Europe! Too bad I can't come to the USA.

She is 21 months old she never had a bit in her mouth, I just longe her for now but I want more exercises that I can do with her. I like your videos, they help me a lot with my horses. Thanks !

At what stage in a horses training/retraining should this technique be used? What I mean is whether it can be used in conjunction with lunging to develop the topline prior to beginning any ridden work?

+Katie Smirnova It can be used in conjunction with lunging, it is preparatory to riding or retraining when the horse doesn’t understand to yield to the inside leg and take contact with the outside rein, and also to teach the horse to soften to the pressure of the bit. You are simulating riding but from the ground and can be helpful in many situations depending on the horse.

i really tried to stretch my horse at the walk and keep contact. every time i did nugged him with my leg and played with the bit a little and he would drop his head but i could not keep him on the bit. and when i would pick up his head and "briddle him" and then loosen my reins i would always lose contact. do i work on the ground and making him stretch first? i cant find that video. also i dont know how lunge him and make him stretch. i have really learned alot from your videos but i feel like im missing a little piece.

I have a green 7yr old mare that I'm restarting going back to longe and in hand work. She does very well moving out on the lunge and goes forward well in hand but when I ask her to move away from me in hand she reacts by picking up the trot which I gently bring her down from. Any suggestions for how I can better encourage her to move laterally away from my aids?
