That practice made me cry because I'm so burnt out from work cultures that doesn't respect the employee's boundaries. This was an eye opener!

Just recently started my own business and my had been struggling with emotions felt from former colleagues who didn’t rush to support me like I did them when they started their own business. It hurt me deeply, like when a loved one betrays your trust. I ended up letting go of that reality with a bit of difficulty. Now that I’m here watching and pondering on this talk, I whole heartedly agree, accept the new insight…(one I wish I had found just a year ago) and witness this to be true. I’m now saving love for loved ones, and kindness, respect and boundaries for colleagues, clients and associates. Business is a much happiest professional place. Thank you!🙏🏻

This couldn't have come at a better time. I've been working at the same "we're like family" company for 3+ years. I made the mistake of getting closely attached to my co-workers (invited to kids' graduation parties, sent me flowers after I had gotten in a car accident, etc.), but have been wanting to leave as there are no growth opportunities and I'm not inspired by what I do at all. I haven't left because everyone is so nice (especially my immediate supervisor who has become like a big sister to me), and I know they would take it personally. But that's my fault - not theirs - for not setting boundaries. So I've been in self-imposed misery for the past 3 years instead of just leaving. Listening to Gloria's TedTalk is exactly what I needed. Time to move on and move forward.

Good for you. I hope you've found a new role by now!
@jsoul66472 жыл бұрын
I was in the same exact position. When I decided to move forward and got a great new opportunity, some "work family" showed their true colors and it was disappointing. Some cheered me on, and some were complete haters and unsupportive to my growth. Best of luck! I feel free now and excited for a new beginning.

making work our "family" seems like another piece that we try to add to our identity. Similar to "I am a mother" "I am a wife", etc., instead of realizing that we can just BE ourselves, without feeling the need to attach to anything.
@haritikanand85022 жыл бұрын
But we attach ourselves to our relational roles because they are rooted in and imbued with love and connection..those things widely affect our lives and become tightly and deeply ingrained to it... So isn't such "attachment" inevitable and why should it be avoided rather than embraced as a very intrinsic and primary part of human nature.

Some women can't function without seeing themselves as mothers and wives and it's very sad when children grow up, move out and divorce happens. That can never be easy but I see some women lose their entire identity and purpose when that happens. They just sink. Yes we humas are a social species but too much dependence on these labels is a devastation waiting to happen. You have to know who you are and know your worth before you are a wife or a mother or a friend.

I love the sports team metaphor. A bit of fun, with even a bit of professionalism that's more about focus and getting better, in the time you're in the game or practice. But we see examples of sports professionals having balanced lives, actually using the big money they make, it's a good touchstone.

I would add work is not your second home. I just cleared all the personal stuff out of my office. I’m not quitting but I just realized that all I need in my office is the stuff I need to do my job. I have family pictures on my phone and don’t need the “quirky” stuff that shows my personality or interests.

I've never felt obligated to my jobs. I'm replaceable. If I got fired today, my job would be posted tomorrow morning. My jobs are just a way for me to make an income to live a certain lifestyle, nothing more. I'm okay not "loving" what I'm doing. It's okay to be content and find joy outside of work. I'd say most people aren't "happy" at their jobs, so don't try to strive for that. I'd say just find something manageable that works with your circumstances and provides enough income where you can do the things you actually love outside of your job. Now, if you hate your job, that's a different thing, but nothing wrong with just being content.

We focus on the "family" part instead of "like". "Like" does not equal "is".
@takimissaoui28882 жыл бұрын
It should not be "like" a family, it should be like a professional work space. The phrase "like a family" gives you the illusion that it's okay to be exploited, and that you are making a noble sacrifice. And that's not true, you're just risking your health so that the company can generate more profit.
