I'm beginning to understand why England didn't win a lot despite having some great teams. It was always 442, high intensity ,high tempo..blah blah blah. The tactical landscape probably REALLY changed only after Jose dismantled the league twice with his 433.
@BurnsTennis4 жыл бұрын
I agree with you. Let's look at the three times England made a semifinal of a major tournament and could have either made the final or won the tournament: 1990 under Bobby Robson. Switched to 3:5:2 mid tournament with a sweeper and was probably the better side against West Germany in the semifinal, but didn't quite get the luck, hitting the post in extra time and losing on penalties: Euro 96. Same thing again, this time Terry Venables plays the same formation and England were exceptional in the semifinal against Germany but again didn't get the luck hitting the post in extra time, losing on penalties just like 1990. 2018 under Southgate, this time 3:4:3 and they have their best tournament since Euro 96. This time a lack of experience costing them against Croatia. Every other tournament where England played 4:4:2 they didn't make significant progress. There were some very talented English players in the 1990s but when I see archive footage I feel a bit strange now because the formations just look so basic. And I used to go a lot of football back then, primarily Anfield and some London stadiums.

Teams like Everton were playing 433 back in the 1960’s under their then manager Harry Cattrick .It was the famous Kendal ,Harvey & Ball midfield era .They also had four at the back .2 full backs who could go down the wing ( known as wing backs these days ) a centre half & a sweeper ( also known as centre backs these days ) & three up front in attack .Years before Jose came along .

The standard or European football from 1977-1984 was the lowest I can remember. None of THE big European greats had good sides. Ajax, Inter, Munich, Madrid, Milan, Barca were all going through a massive slump by their standards. Facts are that only 1 non-English side won the EC in 8 seasons. Is that because England had such amazing teams or that the opposition was shite? Well when you consider in those days 90% ( if not more) of our club's players came from the UK. Did the performances of England, Scotland, Ireland and Wales reflect the dominance of our English clubs?........NO. That gives you a massive clue to the answer.

@@KryptonitetoallBS Oh how convenient. The whole of Europe declined just as Liverpool were winning it haha, LMAO 😂. Bollocks. Munich and Monchengladbach were excellent. As were Hamburg. So too were Juventus. Roma had World Cup winners. La Liga and Serie A were more competitive all over, not just a two team league. And literally LOTS of very tricky and dangerous teams in Eastern Europe. It was hell going behind the Iron Curtain to play in front of 70,000 in Sofia or 90,000 in Tblisi. Even Belgium had good sides like Bruges and Anderlecht. Talent was spread around the continent, not confined to just half a dozen rich super clubs like now. @wildebest Some people can only cope with simple but not subtle. The ex Liverpool players of that era still don't give much way on what the secret was. But from what I can tell, the incessant five a side training meant that Liverpool were far suprerior to their opponents in dealing with the ball in tight spaces, and consequently they could play their way out of difficult situations, and put their opponents under pressure in difficult situations. Liverpool players also had superior fitness, despite the talk of drinking a lot, I think that is overegged a bit, they worked much harder than they let on. So the key was incessant five a side training, being comfortable with the football, and purchasing young players who had a lot of footballing intelligence. Example, I read Ian Rush's book. He played a lot of reserve football as a central midfielder in Chester then went up front. So Rush could understand how to interplay with guys like Dalglish, Beardsley, Barnes, Houghton as an established player. So that is what Souness is talking about, learning from the senior pros who pass on how it should be done, by showing how it should be done. As opposed to being told what to do at every turn.
