The present world needs a Bill Shankly. Not just for football but for a role model for society. Today we have so much greed, hypocrisy that cuts through society. This was a man who lived by his principles. I shudder to think about what he'd make of the modern game, the likes of Sam Allardyce using the England job to make a bit more on the side of a already terrific wage. The media like to make us believe the era of the Premier league is such a superior game to the old days, well they can kid themselves all they want. The footballing side is debatable but the modern game has lost it's soul

To compare Shankly to a modern figure, it is only possible to compare him with people like Steve Job. These are men who were more than what they were hired for; men with visions that were greater than their jobs. You wanted a manager and a CEO, but you hired a prophet - that is the closest thing with which you could compare Shanks and Job. Football is about entertainment but Shankly saw beyond entertainment and made it into something close to a religious institution. Job was appointed as a CEO of a completely American commercial company and turned it into something more, something that actually can be trusted and respected. You can always find an excellent manager/CEO who could deliver results and churn out profits. But it's more difficult to replace people like Shanks or Job. When they are gone, an institution dies with them. A football club goes back to be just a football club, and a company just a company.

+thucydides Neo Good comments my friend, however the spirit of Shankly is still with the club. After he left we became more successful because the club had faith in the people around him like Paisley and Fagan. Mind you, I don't know if he could be a manager now with all the money and prima donna stars. He was all about old fashioned values like honesty, hard work, team spirit.
