Option5? SpaceX is supposedly taking over SLC 37 after the last Delta Flight. They use SLC 37 for Starship, build new OLM(s), move the tower from SLC39A and add new towers(s) at SLC37. This allows SLC 39A and SLC 40 to continue Falcon operations unimpeded by Starship activities and Starship Stage 0 construction to be unimpeded by Falcon operations.

That's my guess also. NASA is still worried about LC-39a being taken out of commission by a Starship RUD

5th Theory - Clear the tower for catch testing? SpaceX are short of space at Boca Chica, it will take a while to build OLM2 there, and they will fundamentally want to move boosters from test/launch at Boca Chica to production/launch in Florida. The tower is doing ‘nothing’ so could quickly be used to try catching for IFT5 perhaps. PS - alternative idea. They do catch tower at Boca Chica with OLM2, and never move last 2 sections there as only need shorter tower to catch boosters.

You know, dropping the OLM down to ground level, while making it more difficult to handle launch thrust, would be the best way to handle the added length of Starship V3 without making launch tower construction an even bigger engineering challenge.
@rgberry69

I suspect that the OLM legs were cut down as it was potentially decided that it would be easier/faster to install the required flame suppression, by removing the existing legs and concrete and starting that part again.

If they were to build the giant flame diverter, would they not have to make changes to the tower? I think the diverter makes the most sense, I just think it would be too big a change with the tower already built.

To me it seems easier to mount the cooling plate and redo the foundation without the pillars in the way. Also the connection between foundation and pillars can be made better than the after alteration crater experience. A.K.A. You leave rebar sticking out for the next part. So they are rebuilding the mount from ground up.
@mgclark46
@mgclark46 5 ай бұрын
The higher they raise the mount, the less-robust and complex need-be the ground protection systems. Of course, Mechazilla would need to grow in accordance with any increased height of the mount. I think they will iterate-up in Florida while future iterations of MZ/Mount combos will go much higher.

Watching the shock waves moving across the surface during launches at Boca Chica just screams for the need to use a big flame trench, pointed towards the ocean. I also think the ship will be spotted further from the tower. The tower avoidance maneuver is damaging the launch mount ring. I also expect a redesign of the ring mount. Bigger opening, top without any flat surfaces. There is no way the current ring will support daily launches, let alone several per day. Tower will also need to be stretched. Why build the current height when you know version 3 is coming? That only requires another module above the ship QD and below the longer chop sticks. Same for second launch complex at BC. SpaceX will soon have good flame trench experience with muliple Raptors at Massey site. World's biggest blow torch needs to be tamed. Current Boca design was a quick fix.

I see two factors for the OLM. 1. The impact/delays its use will have on Falcon launches. 2. The risk launch or recovery presents to the Falcon facility. On that basis I would not be surprised if the tower gets dismantled and moved to another pad. If Elons plans come together he is going to need a launch site with a tank farm large enough to support several OLMs. I also see a need for the farm to be filled from tanker ships at an adjacent jetty.

I’m sure it has to be something like tower needs to be researched, couple catches first before upgrades and the stretched version of starship v3 all integrated. Plus idk why they would build the tower sections in Florida, ship them to Texas, unless it’s all outdated and cape will be like some say the main launch site and boca will be just a test area…

I bet with the 3 launches so far Space x gathered enough Data that they decided to build a completely new OLM which will be tested at boca Chica first with the second Tower. When this new OLM und Tower are ready i bet they will demolish the first OLM too while continueing to Launch from the new OLM. Or the will completely demolish the full first Tower too and rebuild after at KSC

I never understood why they wanted to put a starship tower in SLC-39A. It's already a busy pad and I don't see how the existing GSE is compatible. I also imagine that by the time they get catching a booster or ship down the tower will be redesigned. And if you missed a booster catch your potentially blowing up two pads at the same time. I think option 4: The tower is going to be scrapped. The most likely

Not surprising that they resumed work at LC-39a Starship tower. The starship tower was unusable as NASA wouldn't risk an accident to nearby (1000 ft) LC-39a tower that launches humans to ISS. It was the Only such tower until Spacex launched astronauts at SLC-40. So now its clear to launch when ready and needs to be finished. New excuses may come, but I think they can use it before the year's out.
