Originally, you could only use Sends to output to an FX channel, not a bus and there were a few other differences, like fader flip. As of Studio One 6.5, I think there are only two differences between FX Channels and busses: 1) as you mentioned, you can use MIX FX inserts on busses but not on FX Channels. 2) FX Channels default to "Solo Safe", a mode I rarely see anyone talk about. Notice that when you create an FX Channel, the solo button is Green (at least by default)? That means that if any other channel is soloed, the FX Channel will also be soloed whether it was selected or not. You can enable Solo Safe for any channel, but it's on by default for FX Channels.

Hi Mike. Your presentations of Studio One are excellent. This particular subject really captured my attention. I feel I have made many strides with mi ing and gain staging, but feel my comprehension of console is still a bit armature. This episode was dynamic. I am going to start using sends based on this discussion. Thank you. Your instructions have been a source of inspiration for several years now. Keep up the great work. A good explanation of how the process of busses, VCAs and the effects channel work; can't say I use the effects channel much either. It almost seems redundant when you can use a bus channel instead; correct me if I'm wrong. I sometimes look at the length of your videos and ask if I have the time for it, but as soon as I get in and I can see the thoroughness, it's clear it will be time well spent! Just like this one!

Honestly, I prefer not to complicate things especially when mixing for long hours. So I'll use Efx for effects,and busses for groups. That ensures a more tidy platform for me visually and mentally. Again, to each their own.

So for effects imo… you can choose how much of the signal you fill feed the fx channel ( pre and post fader ). But bus channel is bounded by the fader level… so whatever the level of the fader is its the same level feeded in the bus. Thats helps to differentiate when to use a bus and when an fx chanel

I mean at the beginning if you wanted each to have it's proper reverb eq you just move it below the room reverb. lol like in the insert just move pro eq down and eq what you need. Reverb > EQ on insert. The second way you're talking about is affecting the eq going to reverb from the send. It's to viable ways just two different ways.

Mike you are without a doubt the king of reducing complex concepts down to nicely digestible bite-sized mouth-fulls. Thank you for what you do. Here's a (hopefully) simple question on routing. Let's say I have an acoustic guitar track that I run to a bus. My goal is to put a little room reverb on only the mid and upper frequencies of that track. Would a plausible method be to put a dynamic EQ in the "send" of that bus, then below that put my room reverb? The goal is to skip the reverb on the low frequencies, yet pass the mids and highs to the room reverb. Does that idea have merit? Thanks again for all you do for your viewers! ✌

Thought I was going crazy when following these steps for IK MODO Drums 1.5, could not drag and drop the Busses to be next to the toms that I used to follow your example. Did some digging around and it seems from forum that the ability to do this on Multi output VSTs disappeared with V3. That's a shame because the ADHD in me really needs to be grouped together LOL. Interesting you can obviously do it with Superior Drummer. Didn't see anyone else mention this in the comments...

Love your videos Mike. Clear and concise. I have a question and a comment: Question is, having discovered Cakewalk via your channel and downloading a copy, and now considering S1 which I am completely unfamiliar with atm, it seems like there are a LOT of similarities in workflow and design. Is that true in your eyes, or am I reading too much into what I'm seeing. I loved Cakewalk, but didn't like that it was free and thus worried about longevity (but that seems to have changed recently). Would like to know if you think the two DAWs are more similar than either, say, to Cubase or Reaper. I had not considered S1 because it lacked good video support, but even that looks like it is getting some love from Presonus. My comment is on the FX channel vs Bus Channel. I noticed in the video around 21:12 that the Solo button is yellow on the FX channel vs orange on the others. Is there a different Solo behavior on the FX channel vs the Bus. I would suspect that if you solo the bus, it would automatically solo everything sent to the bus. Is that true on the FX channel too? Perhaps you can just solo the FX channel? Cheers!

How is the reverb getting EQ if you put it before the reverb? I thought the channel reads top to bottom, which to my understanding means the input to the send is getting EQ, and then the reverb is being added after the sound is EQ.

Well, there are no "sends" in the FX Channel as of the last version of 5 Pro. I dont use them anyway in Studio One , Im an old school MACKIE 1604VLZ user who uses Busses ( or Aux 's ) , I still have the old analog flow in my mind. This is very similar in a lot of ways .

if you look in the performance window what huge latency some stock plugins like the EQ or Compressor actually have, you will probably not use them again. Similar plugins from other companies have no latency at all (at least not in ms).

I currently run S1 v5 and I'm a little bit confused with the way plugins sound depending on the channel you put them. As I test the way plugins sound and the color they bring even the quality. I found that the best sound I hear is when using the plugins on a added Bus by right clicking the mixer channel and choosing add bus channel to the selected track. The majority of plugins I have sound best by using them like that. When using them trough fx channel (send) they sound different and even I get a little bit of volume gain when adding and fx channel. This is very confusing.
@dorukyucebasoglu9539 Жыл бұрын
This has to do with the routing as mentioned in the video. When you add a bus channel for selected tracks, Studio One automatically routes the *output* of the track to the bus. The signal flow now becomes *Track -> Bus -> Main* (Main is the output to your speakers or headphones). When you add plugins onto that bus you're essentially doing the same thing as adding plugins directly onto the selected track, you hear the 100% wet signal (the sound after its altered by plugins). When you use sends (FX or Bus, doesn't matter) the output of the track is not routed into it, but instead it is *split and sent* to the channel. The signal flow is *Track -> Main* AND *FX or Bus -> Main* . So you hear both the track itself and the sends blended together. Hope this helps clear things up.
@lucasturney4269 Жыл бұрын
@@dorukyucebasoglu9539 I was going to answer this, but you nailed it pretty well. I might add that I see a lot of people sending a channel and getting confused why it's suddenly overpowering, say for instance, the reverb on their send. This has to do with the fact that, if you're using an effect on a send, you *usually want to be running the signal into a plugin that's set at 100% Wet/0% Dry, if it has the option, e.g., the "Wet" knob in Exponential Audio R4 turned fully clockwise, or the "Mix" knob on Valhalla VintageVerb turned all the way to 100%. This isn't to be confused with setting the send volume (the small, blue volume line in the audio track's "Send" section,) to 100%/0dB.
