I was a teller for almost 2 years before getting promoted and I can just say that it all depends on what bank you work for and who your manager is. In my personal experience, I was able to get 3 promotions within 5 years of working at 2 different banks and couldn't be prouder to have started as a teller. Please don't be discouraged by someone's personal experience, since yours could be completely different.

What if someone wants to work for a bank or credit union and even though they have no cash handling experience but have customer service experience as a receptionist. The jobs i have applied for as teller positions were entry level and said cash handling preferred. I was wondering even though a entry level teller says cash handling preferred is it really required or have i just applied to some boomer style hiring managers who do not get what entry level means?

@@robbiem4624 It's preferred but by no means required, as long as you highlight that you're a fast learner. Nowadays, tellers do a lot less than before with all the technology at hand. So, if you're able to learn the system and do basic elementary school math you shouldn't have a problem.

I’ve been in banking 43 years. I was teller 4.5 years. At that time there were very few Drive thru branches. Lines would be out the door, a different era of banking. It was a lot of pressure, but you became battle tested and it prepared you for the future. We made very little money but we were thankful to have job. We thought about the long term because of the benefits, Vacation, sick days, holidays, etc. It’s also a job or a career you either like or you don’t. It’s a more difficult job than the public would imagine.

You have to work under pressure! Remember, people quit bosses, not jobs. As a bank manager myself It sounds like you didn’t receive adequate support from your management team. When you interview for a job, it is not only a chance for them to know you but for you to make sure you will have the support you need. Ask smart questions: being a teller can be stressful as times. What does management do to make the teller team more efficient and confident to overcome stressful situations? What kind of support and mentorship does your company offer for career development? What is your management style? How do you hold your employees accountable to achieve your goals? Those questions will show you the true colors of what you can expect so you can choose if that is a good company to work for. I can honestly tell you my tellers love their job even in stressful situations!

I only wish people would be more understanding when it comes to our policies and that we do not control those. We can only serve you the best we can within the limits that are presented to us. And those policies are there to protect you also so I want to follow them all the time. It’s so important. I enjoy being a bank teller. But yeah sometimes it can be stressful. A good example would be having to present ID for certain transactions. Stay safe all! 🥰

I started as a teller and I appreciate your positive attitude. Also what she said about the large check fraud makes no sense. There is an automatic hold placed on all large checks for that very reason, so that the bank can make sure the check is legit. In my bank if you deposit a check for lets say $10K, only $225 is available on the day, so the loss to the bank wouldn't be so bad.

I've been at this credit union job for a month. I'm a "financial coach" so I open peoples accounts and advise them with their finances. That last part is why I hate it honestly, I work front desk even though I have my own office, and I constantly have to assist people when I have no idea how to fix their problem. Random people will come in with problems all the time and they're coming in pissed off because they were being held on the phone or couldn't get things figured out so they come to us. And we weren't trained for everything, so I don't know why they have us working front desk. I think it's a matter of being understaffed. All the points you made are completely true it's high stress and overwhelming, I puke before work and shake during my lunch break. Don't think I will go back tomorrow.

Hi, about the sales thing. I heard from someone else that while bank tellers do deal with sales, it's different from the usual sales where someone's using sleazy sales tactics or trying to sell a product they don't need. Instead you're more helping someone direct them toward their financial goals, almost like someone sick who comes in to see a doctor and then comes up with solutions to help treat their conditions. So it's almost like a financial physician. Do you agree with this notion and from your point of view is it better than usual sales work?
@superlicious13
@superlicious13 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Naruto - I definitely agree with that. As a teller, you don’t directly have to do sales such as doing credit applications etc . You only have to try and get referrals to your partners & try to convince clients to meet with advisors. You also get volume when you do referrals! Hope that’s helps (:

The idea of people do not want to work is bs. There are some people sadly that don't want to work due to the pandemic, or go to school full time. However, there are people who do want to work and collect a check but because hiring managers are boomers and want to hire someone with a certain mindset or skills that they feel should already have or no and since the job they are applying for is entry level they don't want to train and so they done get hired. I feel people tend to hire other peoples friends or their friends kids.

Bank policies are upsetting to bank customers. One of the big things is withdrawals. To withdraw an amount over the banks predetermined limit, lets say their amount is $3000 per day. You have to make an appointment the next day or even longer for "YOUR" money. Maybe theirs an important event in you life and you need "YOUR" cash now. Those events do happen. That is totally unacceptable. Case in point; You don't need to an appointment to deposit an amount over their predetermined withdrawal amount. Do you???

@@superlicious13 You think so? kk I'll watch. Idk if it's because it's Canada, my coworker graduated from a good university(UCD) major in Eco, work full time for teller for 5 years, he did get offer to promote but he turn it down because it's in operation(teller dpt), and eventually he waited for his chance to do an internal transfer and became an AML analyst.

Teller wages are much higher than McDonald's minimum wage. Also, now the banking system has delayed check arrivals, and the review time is 4 business days, so you don't need to identify the real and fake checks yourself.

Hi Elena, thanks for this video. I am residing in Vancouver n was thinking of applying for personal banking associate job but then I came across ur video on that n I realized that job is not for me as m not a sales person n m little shy to talk to customers. I have worked as a single window operator in a bank in India. The job consists of the teller job + account opening/closing, KYC s, credit/debit card application fillings, etc...So could you plz suggest a job in banking that would suit my profile?
