I drove bus for a company that Greyhound subleased us to do routes to and from Atlantic City when I lived in Pennsylvania. I operated a MCI 53 passenger. I only worked for the company on weekends since I had a another job driving for someone else during the week. But, I can't say I enjoyed the runs because of the bus company, not the people, etc. I realized the pay wasn't worth the extra work. I looked up Greyhound salaries this week and I was shocked to see how low they were offering. I have been driving for 22 years, 12 of the last driving hazmat truck, which pays a lot more. And less aggravation because of no one else in my vehicle. I like it a lot more than bus and would not want to do that again.

Hi philip, I used to drive back in the early 90s to the mid-90s. Based out of Orlando and then jacksonville. Extra board was tough!

I liked running up and down the east coast. We work the Summers out of the port authority. Lots and lots and lots of work up there. Back then the pay was $13.83 an hour, which sounds like not much, when you go for making $6.50 an hour hauling appliances up and down the stairs, it's like hitting the lottery! Had a great time met a lot of people. Some good some just flat out crazy. But for the most part I really enjoyed my time there.

Any idea on how the transfer process work? Like if you're hired in one city how long would a driver have to be employed to transfer to another city and any idea on how long the time frame of employment would have to be before transferring to a different location as a permanent residence?

I worked for Amtrak out of Lorton Virginia (on AutoTrain) and then out of Washington DC.Whenever I was finished work instead I’d waiting around for hours to ride Amtrak home, I’d take Greyhound home between DC and Hagerstown MD I had the same driver a lot named Rosie Simms unsure what her Base is how long do Drivers stay on Extra Board? with the position I worked for Amtrak, I had a monthly hourly guarantee of 185 hours and we did receive a per diem what was a flat rate per day. Are you still with Greyhound?

In city bus driving you need to be on call only on your days you are scheduled to work which for starters generally is Wednesday through Sunday. You are off Monday and Tuesday as a rookie. But to be on call 24/7 is ridiculous.

You start on the extra board. You are on call 24/7. No scheduled days off. If you get one it was because you were far down the list. Any even then things change. You could be called at all hours, day or night.

Mr Cooke you seem like a smart guy. Use your GI benefits go back to trade school and learn to become a diesel mechanic who repairs Greyhound buses or other heavy duty diesel powered equipment.Diesel techs are in huge demand right now and there are more high paying jobs than qualified applicants. Diesel techs start at around 18 to 22 an hr depending on the region and after a few years in the field (4 to 7 years) can make 35 an hour and up to 50. In some parts of the world Diesel techs can make 65 to 100 dollars an hr in high risk areas fixing heavy construction machinery. You will never make that kind of bread driving a bus. Learn a skilled trade brother and invest your money wisely. That is where the real opportunities are. Skilled trades. Current diesel mechanic who makes over a 100k as a CAT Dealer tech and who paid off my 4 family house in only 11 years of ownership.Training in school can take 6 months up to 2 years depending on what school or program you attend. Good luck. There are also paid apprenticeships available if you qualify and already possess a strong mechanical aptitude. I went to a two community college program and worked full time at night. Very affordable and rough but it paid off. I make more money than my girlfriend who is a high school administrator with 2 masters and 80k in student loans. I paid for my school with cash and a small 5k loan that I paid off the first 9 months at my new job as a tech. Current debt; ZERO.
