Do'nt apologize for your accent. I'm french and find it very convenient to understand. I spend a little time in Lancashire too and frankly the northern accents are more comprehensible than the londonish one. And long life to accents! In french I have a southern very strong accent and I stick to it very proudly.

Zippos and lighters in general just come in handy, but most people these days don't like to have things that are handy. And the comment on people miss hearing words you say gave me a good chuckle. Keep up the good work. You're videos are great.

I’m from California and I’ve watched dozens of your videos and have never had a problem understanding your accent. Maybe it’s because i watch a lot of British tv, and I’m familiar with most of the processed and materials that you talk about. I adore your channel, and if I’m ever in England I would like very much to buy you a cup of tea and have a chat.

I’m an Australian and I can understand you perfectly. Mind you when I was in York shire I was in the pub and my English girlfriend at the time, asked me after I was talking to a local, a Scotsman and Irishman, did I understand them. Of course I did. She replied, she couldn’t understand a bloody word. The drunker I got and they got they then couldn’t understand me, me? Who couldn’t understand an Australian (at the time serving Australian soldier)? That was back in 2000.

When I fabricate at work, if I can manage it all drilling gets done early in the process. I do this because when I first started in the position I had several fabrications where drilling into the acrylic resulted in a bad enough crack/damage that I had to start all over. Murphy watches over me, waiting for just the right time to mess things up. Maintenance spray appears, looking at one of the brands chemical makeup appears to be similar to a product WD40. Might smell different though since Water Displacer Forty has a recognizable odour.

Reassembly of a painted locomotive is the most nerve wrecking job there is. I recently built a loco with a very British livery albeit in blue, and after spending many many hours on painting and lining. And then assembling the lot without a screw driver wandering .....
@thepunk4hire3596 жыл бұрын
This loco is quite lovely, something about six drive wheel and more is "romantic?" I think. Is the boiler steel in this one? sorry if you answered that already. Since I watch all your videos and you make so many, it can be hard to keep track of what your working on??

Dialect. I spent several weeks in apprehension of some strange kind of initiation ceremony, due to a mate of mine saying, "Thar turn for't fish oil, lad". I was a new worker at a local foundry in West Yorkshire and a lot of the blokes were biking mates and drinkers at my local - but, "fish oil"?? I twigged it eventually. He said it at an hour before lunchtime on Fridays; most of the lads ate fish and chips for lunch; the fish oil was dialect for fish-hole which, in turn was the nickname for the fish and chip shop. Phew!

Hi Keith 1. Really enjoy your accent mate (this is cockney for I think lad in Yokshire?) . 2. Just a quick query that was bothering me in the last few moments of this video - what is up with the middle wheel of the loco. Is it the camera angle or is the wheel bent/moving transversely across the frame? 3. No need to reply this could be my imagination - the camera angle - and I'm not trying to prove I study each of your videos with my micrometer pressed against the screen (well not always - really).
@keithappleton6 жыл бұрын
It's not the camera angle, it is because the wheels are unsupported and so they do that - especially the main crank/driver axle ...... it is a good idea to have some side play on the axles so that the engine can go around corners . . .
@daveenglish50596 жыл бұрын
Keith Many thanks for your quick reply - I now understand.
@RobbetDegoat6 жыл бұрын
Would the balance weights on the wheels be a carefully measured weight or would it just be estimated? I guess what I'm asking is, are any two wheels the same or are the balance weights different to allow for slight differences in the wheels? Would the wheel sit dead level if put on a balance machine?
@keithappleton6 жыл бұрын
The balance weights are there to balance the mass of the coupling rods and the connecting rods on the crankpins. In model sizes it is an estimation of the weight required to balance the wheel , crankpin & rods.
@RobbetDegoat6 жыл бұрын
Yep makes sense. I didn't think about all the rods and crankpins. Thanks for the quick reply.

I have done a number of patterns for model locomotive driver castings. These based on the original drawings. On the drawings you will see the weight area were hollow in some cases with openings that would be covered over with the tire. This was where weight could be added for balance.

Another fine example of the UK and the US separated by a common language. 'Gunmetal' in the UK, is 'Red Brass' in the USA. Why is it called gunmetal? Because the alloy was once used in casting naval cannons. Land artillery was often cast iron, but at sea, this corroded quickly, thus the use of this type of bronze developed. You can even find examples of pistols from the 17 and 1800's cast in this alloy. Today, this metal is most frequently seen in plumbing castings. Again, because of it's non-corrosive properties.
@tobyw95736 жыл бұрын
Severus Barrowstone , Brass is also easier to cast and machine than iron, and harder to burst as well. Generally speaking anyway.

@DAKOTA567776 жыл бұрын
Archer _1012 I'm curious, which part are you having trouble with? Is it the eccentric crank connected to the driving rod that seemingly moves of its own accord? If so, the main thing to keep in mind is that the centre of rotation is still the wheel axel, even though the part is connected to the crank throw of the driving rod. The best way to see this in action is when a crankshaft is held by one end in a lathe and turned, even though the other end is free floating, and there's a crank throw(s) between it and the other side, it stays centred. The eccentric crank on the Walschaerts doesn't return to the centre, but it does form a perfect circle around the centre. It does this because the crank is longer than the distance to the centre, so the end continues past, as if it were its own crank throw. Which is basically what it is, just think of it as an invisible crank throw. Indeed if you wanted to, you could make an internal Walschaerts on the axel shaft itself using a crank throw same as the actual driving rod would be connected to.
