I am doing something similar (smaller acreage though - I am working on about a hactor). Followed a tone of KZbin channels, raised beds, mini jersey cows, no-till, etc. When you start off you have all these ideas and a "plan". 2 years into it... this is way harder than it looks. No one ever talks about how capital-intensive it is, and the fact that for about 2 years it feels like you live on a construction site. Half the time you just feel like you are at the mercy of the elements. Don't get me started about the rain, clay soil, and.... oh the weeds, the grass cutting. Some guy you hire who ends up doing some half-cocked job and you end up doing the thing yourself. Did I mention how expensive this is? So finally you manage to plant something... You only get feedback 2 months later on what you did wrong; i.e. the clay is not acidic enough or some random thing. Then you discover that some wired insect or bird really loves whatever you have planted (Had half my sunflower seeds eaten by something - I can only speculate that it was mice). Halfway through all the work, you start thinking... I need a mini-tractor, with all the bells and whistles.. and a bakkie. Oh, this mini tractor costs half a million rand... so quitting your job is not an option. Now I know, this sounds really negative; When all is said and done there is a glimmer of hope; A little joy when you see certain things coming together. This is the most realistic channel I have found on KZbin.

This is the most relatable post about homesteading ever. Every... single... sentence. All so true. What keeps us going is the dream we have and the support we get. But there are so many things that happen in the background. Things break all the time, at one point our bakkie stopped 'bakkie-ing', trees fall on the fence, you wake up to a flooded farm, solar systems are not working, and many other issues. I wish we had more people sharing the truth about this lifestyle. Being off-grid or on a homestead is constantly sold as the silver bullet but there is so much you have to give up to live like this. This experience has made us appreciate and respect the people doing it successfully. Nothing negative about what you said, its truth. The more we are open to it the more we can help people coming into this lifestyle to prepare.

Also there are ways around a lot of things. Like keeping grass short get animal glazers. Only problem is need to lock them up at night. 😉 Also natural ploughers are pigs. Get foods that grow naturally without loads of care. Mulch loads. Make own compost heap. Doesn't need to be cared for crazy like they say. Nature has been doing that job for years! Worm bins are excellent for compost. They also don't need much work. Understand your 'weeds' a lot of them are very nutrient rich. God gave purpose to all things lol. They are also medicinal so try to love them lol. Also the aesthetics are not important just the production is. And all the poop from animals also great for soil. It all works in harmony. Just work with it. Xxx

When I first saw the black on the coup, I thought o no.. but watching it from the bakkie with the beautiful background WOW it looks gorgeous!!! My advice, give yourself a break you have come miles!! I know we are always impatient and we want things done but rome was not build in a day, just go watch your own first episodes YOU have come very far, especially taking in to account you are part time steaders! Just in the last couple of months, you have a porch a raisebed garden 2 coups with fencing an archway and that's just the things you have shown! Thats a hell of alot!!!!

If you plant berry bushes in that flower beds your chickens can eat from it but not destroy it. Maybe some colourfull spinash or amaranth that they can feed on witch will help with your feed bill

I think they said 20000 m2 or 2 hectares

Oh ohk I'm thinking of securing 1 hectare I saw in Barberton for homesteading, u think a few goats or sheep's, chicken and vegetables will fit on one hectare

It's just under 2 hectares, around 1.6.

@@king_kwang1 hectare is big enough. Also will be more manageable for you especially when starting. Few goats and sheep and some chickens will be perfect. You could even add a few more rabbits etc. Just keep in mind that if you want the goats to graze completely then you may need to have a dedicated area and grow fodder or hay to feed. Otherwise you will supplement. You will be surprised how big a hectare can actually be.

Yes. Lots of rain and sunshine here. Rain mostly comes at night which makes it great.

I think we should be taught all this in school as food is sooooo expensive. Our gov has no intention of helping so we have to help ourselves.

Absolutely. There is not much incentive to teach you this as it empowers people and makes them less reliant on government and the questionable leaders. It is our responsibility to learn and up skill ourselves.
