At about 6:50am Lake Station Fire Station 2 was toned out to assist New Chicago FD for a reported fully engulfed house at 50 Washington. Fire 6 reported heavy smoke in the area while responding to the station so it was evident that there was a working fire. On arrival heavy fire was found on the west end of the structure. 2 attack lines were used to bring the fire under control and nobody was injured. Great job done by the New Chicago and Lake Station Fire Departments

This is the one of the best videos I have seen so far that shows the right way to get it done. Especially with only 2 engines and a small crew in a volunteer department. They pulled up, stretched the line, charged the line, made entry into the house and got in there to get the fire knocked down quickly. Excellent job.

Good job. Way to show hustle and a sense of urgency. Some of these fire videos it looks like the guys are sleepwalking when they arrive on scene. They could almost be yawning and stretching and scratching themselves while they consider whether they want to do anything. Not here. Very good aggressive attack.

small ranch home, obvious fire is in the A/B corner and likely the attic space. Perfectly fine to advance standing up unless you can't. If the neutral plane was lower or you had no clue where the fire was, then yes low and go. I'm sure they dropped once they got about halfway down the hallway.

You see what I recorded, you don't see the chief and assistant chief on scene prior to an engines arrival. 360 was done then and the size-up was transmitted to incoming companies. Utilities are rarely touched by fd members, especially when the object here is to extinguish the fire. They are not the utility company and have more important things to do. Why two lines you ask, one one the fire and one out the back window to knock the exterior fire. The fire was contained and youn were not inside

I was told the house was a vacant foreclosure and the fire investigator did determine that it was arson. The fire was set at the rear of the house, I believe he said between the shed and the house

Just watched a video where it took over ten minutes to get water through the hoses from when the boots hit the ground. This is exemplary, you guys tackled this. Good hustle.

First guys off the truck are ready to go as soon as their boots hit the ground. NOT a slow response because they had to hook up a hose and run it all the way down the street. Third and fourth guys in the door were looking in AND managing the hoses at the front door. Yes, a 360 would have been nice, but instead of running a hose all the way around the house, they knocked down the fire IN the house and pushed through to the back yard, running a hose through, instead of around, the house. This was exemplary work, well done.

Wow! This is a great department. I’ve watched many fire videos lately and I’m always amazed at how slow the men move and how long it takes them to start spraying. Then they seem to spray for 90 seconds and stop for a few minutes before they spray some more. Meanwhile I can’t stop thinking how the owners must feel watching their house burn and the flames get bigger and bigger with 25 firemen standing in the yard. This department was on it! Excellent work!

I loved using the pistol grip nozzles Akron Turbojets were my favorite. The Elkhart were very good as well but they had a push button lock and you just freely couldn’t adjust your GPM and spray pattern.

mabas21: this video is very nicely shot. Someone has a nice steady hand. The description was also good. Lots of information. My issue is with the way the comments are set up. For whatever reason, I don't know who you were replying to. Have you deleted the original comments? You've certainly bitten quite a few heads off. Assuming you didn't like what they said, why did you do them a favour and hide what they said? If they made themselves look stupid, why not let them wear ii? Nobody ever died of having egg on their face. And if you're going to say something stupid on social media, there's a better than even chance that you're going to get called out on it. It might be a good idea to keep in mind that you are also being watched by civilians who really don't know. I am a civilian. You can go through all the comments on this video, and you will not find one single criticism from me about the firefighting. I wouldn't do that. Top Grade Knockdown. Textbook response, well rehearsed & very effective. Attack crew with rescue line manned by senior officer for initial attack, back up line officers waiting at the door & additional officer maintaining foreground activities. the homeowners should be very happy, their home is a save & can be rebuilt with minimal loss, all things considered. If only all other scenes could go this well. Mabas21, great work as always. Your work speaks for itself, quality video/audio, good post production work. scripting all those memory chips & maintaining timeline can be a pain some days, post production is the "work" photographers must bear to be seen & appreciated.

Responding units... were precise... Two Trucks, Two Crews... quick with hose set up... hoses were laid out without crossing each other... the inside crew had plenty of slack line to work with... hydrant line ran by first engine... water flow on quickly... crews were ready to attack... nice operation.

I will keep saying this as every now and then I come back to this video. This is a well coordinated fire attack. Front door is forced, attack line goes in and the second line goes in as backup. Job well done in my opinion.

I don't, police were here way before me. Volunteer firefighters have to wake up, drive to the station, gear up, and then drive the apparatus to the fire. I get in my car and drive to the fire. Not being rude, but it's kind of self explanatory

That os ok on the translation. It is a shorter distance to run the hose out the back window of the house than to try and stretch a hose around the house. The second line was used to knock the fire down at the rear of the house

I can't help but notice this house looks almost identical, from the front at least, to the house I grew up in in Colorado Springs, CO and was built in 1953 in one of those neighborhoods where every house was exactly the same as every other house. Rearranged windows or mirrored the floor plan was the only differences. On topic, I love watching this video. These guys make it look easy.

Just an observation and NOT a critique. First line could have been from the outside while a crew was assembled to enter. MIGHT have had a knock down with a SS nozzle without "pushing the fire". They did a great job the way as transpired. You leave a prefab standing, ya done good!

Vincent Gatti Hose streams don't push fire. They did well in getting to hose lines inside and making an aggressive attack. Not sure why they needed 2 lines for this but still a good job.

Got the job done, but definitely a lot to learn from as is always the case with youtube fireground videos. The sirens, air pack donning, etc, although commonly dissected, are not the most important issues at hand here. Rather, it is the tactical decisions that should be focused on. Five years ago this attack would be textbook. However, given the benefit of time and modern fire research, I'd like to assert some new ideas as food for thought. This fire was well through the roof upon the arrival of the first engine and the fire had clearly advanced fully on the A-B corner. Even so, no 360 was done and the first move was to stretch a line straight through the front door. The tactic here was clearly to go offensive and "push" the fire out side B. Ok, it's what we are programmed to do, and it's what they did here, but at what risk? This appears to be of modular/lightweight construction and the chances of structural deficiency or collapse are high. Exponentially more so with full involvement. Upon entry these firefighters advanced directly into this high risk collapse zone. No secondary crew was in place, no RIT was present and they dove in head first. This time it worked out, but that doesn't mean it was safe. UL and the NFPA have recently released studies that prove an aggressive exterior attack combined with strategic ventilation are the best and safest tactics for fire suppression in most cases. They have also put to rest the age old theory that fire can be "pushed". It can't be. An exterior attack on side B would not "push" the fire further into the space as we have always been taught. (I know this is some crazy sh*t right! Took a lot of study and research to convince me there.) The most important thing is water on the fire, no matter where it comes from. Additionally, if a structure like this is potentially occupied and similar tactics are deployed, a primary search of the most survivable space (C-D, D-A) would be impossible until further crews come on scene. This time lapse could mean the difference between life and death for an occupant in the opposite end of the structure. Lastly, the damage profile on this building leans in the favor of exterior attack. It appears to be an unoccupied, perhaps even vacant, modular home with significant fire damage. The judgement can be made that this home will be demolished due to the extent of the fire damage. Undoubtedly the IC here sees no occupants (life) to save and very little chance of saving the home (property). Yet they put the lives of these men at risk and place them directly in harms way. Risk a lot to save a lot, risk nothing to save nothing. This case was the latter. So, while this crew can be commended for getting the fire out and going home safe, you have to consider what could have happened here and what tactical changes could have been made to make these men safer. The practice of firefighting is dangerous, but these new thought processes and modern fire science can help us to make our job as safe and efficient as possible. Thanks for your ear.

Dan Davenport sometimes to get the job done you have to pick up the nozzle and put water on the fire. This was an excellent job done by volunteers of which I used to be one. Risk of injury is part of doing this and these guys as far as I can see did it buy the book. Great job.

Well vented fire room would have been a perfect exterior attack while a quick primary search was commenced on the bc cd and ad portion of the house. Once primary was completed interior engine company could have attacked the fire room which would have been cooled tremendously from the exterior attack. Double the results would have been achieved in the same amount of time Same as said before though. Still a good job and mission accomplished. Just gotta get out of that old school “don’t be a weenie” crap

Why not one inside and one going around the house on the right and later on a third on the left, b/c you never know what is in the garden. They look for a lot of factors and in many cases use dogs to determine the point of origin and cause. In a case like this, you can clearly see where the bilk of the fire is. This narrows down your point of origin from an entire house to one room. Even after the fire is out, in many cases if an accelerant was used you can still smell it

Good quick interior attack. This is the type of firefighting I was taught when I started my 38 yr. full time career in the early 70's on a suburban department. Could be we could have been a bit more cautious back then when we took pride in knocking the fire down. As time went on it seems the FNG adopted a, "we didn't start it" attitude.

If you watch the hose carefully, the one in the grass, it is charged by the time the door is taken and could be manned in a second if there was a flash over or heavy fire in that room. Hard to tell when the second hose gets charged but is a few seconds later. I asked my dad, an ex-fire fighter from the mid 50's through the early 70's. #1, since the fire was through the roof and window the chance of heavy fire or a flash from the door being taken was slim to none. #2, once hoses are charged....

I've spent the past couple of weeks of off time watching a lot of house fire videos as a way of self-training. This attack is BY FAR the fastest I've seen a crew get water on a fire. These guys clearly have practiced. Everything they did was automatic. Yes, the latest NIST studies would have suggested knocking down the fire from outside first, if for no other reason than eliminating some of the heat on the interior crew. The bad luck they encountered was that the fire self-vented through the roof at the upwind end of the house, making the heat/air flow difficult to control. A positive pressure fan at the front door would have been the next step, but the speed with which the attack took place would probably have made it a moot point. Congratulations to those firefighters for a job well done!
