Six young British food consumers go to live and work alongside the workers in Thailand's rice industry, where they must survive on a typical rice worker's wages.
Six typical young British food consumers go to live and work alongside the millions of people in South East Asia's food production industries. They must catch, harvest and process food products that we eat every day, seeing behind the scenes of the tuna, prawn, rice and chicken industries for the very first time. They eat, sleep and live with food workers in the poorest regions of Indonesia and Thailand, surviving on the same wages. The average wage for food workers here is around three pounds a day.
The group leave Indonesia behind and head to one of the poorest and most remote regions of Thailand to live and work in the rice-growing communities. They take on their toughest challenge yet, as they must survive on only the typical rice worker's wages they earn.
Can they handle the back-breaking working conditions of the 90 degree heat in the rice fields, with only one banana and a slice of bread to eat? Will they be able to do enough work to afford to pay the rent on their simple wooden shack or will they end up hungry and homeless, resorting to desperate measures just to survive?
Thailand is the biggest exporter of rice to the west and practically all the jasmine rice we eat in the UK comes from there. But the group are surprised at the high price being paid by the rice-growing communities forced apart from their families because of our high demand for such a cheap staple food.
The heavy workload catches up with Josh, who is sent to hospital with a serious infection picked up in the mud of the rice fields. Manos must come face-to-face with the killing of his favourite food, before the group follow the migrant workers from the open spaces of the countryside to the biggest slum in Thailand, to find alternative ways to earn a living.

They’re definitely also poor. They were saying each bag of rice (from the factory) will sell for £17 as is, and then it’ll be broken down into small packets and sold for up to £140, so they Western companies are making about £123 or about a 700% profit on each bag of rice. By weight, there’s around 900 bags of finished rice on each truck but when you factor in wages, the cost of the rice, and general overhead, there’s probably not much of a profit left.

Welcome to real world. And people and kids complain about living in the US and in the UK. You don’t know how good you have it until you go to somewhere like this. So I hope it is a good eye-opener. I have traveled overseas. It is not the tourist attractions these people don’t have a choice they must survive. Just with the chicken that they had they don’t understand that one chicken could’ve gone for several meals for everyone. They should have boiled The bones and the feet, made a broth or stock, shredded a small amount of chicken and added rice and herbs. That chicken could have fed them for a couple of days. They have no idea how to survive on so little

Yes thank you!! I’m 18 and I believe that once in everyone’s life they should travel outside the country. It’s a huge eye opener, I believe people don’t really understand what goes on in other countries because we are all privileged and sheltered to a certain extent.

Young people is sometimes served on a silver-plate by their parents. You do have to work to earn money. I don't understand the guy who loves chicken but doesn't care where it's from unless it's cheap. And all the animals we eat are killed, you can't eat it when it's alive... I'm so happy though that I live where I live cause we have strict laws about how to handle animals, both as pets and those we breed to eat.

In Greece we also implement high standards, for chickens and pigs atleast. The rest we mostly import, unfortunately.

Eat local everyone. It's not worth eating prawn curry. I wouldn't want to see another prawn or bowl of rice EVER again by this stage.

when blind people watch these episodes we can’t read the translations when people are talking in foreign languages. This is very annoying and distressing. They could have a voiceover that reads the words at the bottom of the screen. I wish they would. I’m sure no one thinks of it unless they can’t see or maybe they have dyslexia. I love these special shows like this and I would like to know what everyone is saying. I feel sad when I don’t know what the people who live in the foreign countries are talking about. that part is one of the most important parts of the whole show. I feel sad to miss that part.
