Im a chef and i love in the USA. My wife is from Madrid and we really want to move to Spain for my daughter (low cost of living, cheap college, safer environment, more family). My thoughts are to either teach English or open a restaurant. It seems like the hoops to opening a business are more difficult than it is worth. I guess i could also drive uber.....😉

Hello Stuart. I have watched a few of your programmes and find them quite informative. I am a British citizen and I would like to live in Spain. I will be 60 years of age this year. I bought a flat in Alicante last year and would like to relocate to Spain. Is it a good idea or am I making a big mistake? I would also like to become a Spanish citizen if I live long enough! What do you think?

Thanks for taking the time to put up these great vids - they are really useful and touch on all the important points. My wife and I are thinking about moving to Spain - we are from the UK, both 31 & have 3 young (2,6 & 11) children. My main concern is being able to earn a living - I'm the sole earner, a freelance IT consultant. Your videos have drawn me to conclude that I'd really need to be looking outside of Spain to continue earning a crust with my IT skills - would you say this was the most "sensible"/secure option? I'm currently learning Spanish with every intention to be good enough to speak only Spanish (eventually!). Keep up the great work mate and thanks for the sound advice.

Hi and thanks for the comment. I wouldn't recommend cutting your UK work ties at least until you get a true feeling of what it is like here. I am not an expert on your particular sector but I imagine you will be competing, logically, with a lot of qualified Spaniards. Unemployment rates are still high. You could find a niche but it will most likely take time. Language skills are essential if you want to have compete actively in the Spanish job market and feel comfortable living here. Hope that helps.

3 kids? Wouldn't even think about it, wait till they left home then come here to retire. Don't forget you've got to pay out 270 euros in social security before you've earn't your first euro.

@LostTraditionsOrg5 жыл бұрын
Save as much as you can, cut back on consuming too much and keep learning Spanish. Then the best thing to do is take 3 months out and live in Spain with your family, try WWOOF, trusted pet sitters or find a place you can rent. By WWOOF'ing you will get to know the area, the culture and the people. www.losttraditions.org/granada-spain Anything is possible, but only you can make it happen!

What's the difference between expat and immigrant?
@CineSoar7 жыл бұрын
Largely, it is the visa agreements (or lack thereof) between ones native country and their adoptive country. The term expat tends to be applied, where the borders between the two countries are relatively rather open. On a more cynical level however, it is often associated with the relative social 'desirability' of those who relocate (which may indeed underlie the visa arrangements of the two countries).

Not easy to get a construction permit in Spain (ranked 113)? that's very good news... This will keep the Chinese away and guarantees Spain will remain Spanish for a while yet. Just imagine Granada's Alhambra being run by a Chinese person or company. What an awful possibility !!!

hi you dont mention how much a required amount setting up a small business in spain
@1Deepairdiver5 жыл бұрын
don't start a business in Spain being self employed or autonomo. too expensive and the Authorities see you by default as a liar and a crook. no benefits, help,advise or nothing. Just relentless false demands, fines etc. you need to start off as a billionaire to become a millionaire. be warned
@howard517232 жыл бұрын
I don't think Spain would be anymore different from any other EU country, Ireland is easy to start a business but a complete nightmare to operate it. Franchising is not a good idea, you pay good money only to have a hand tied behind your back.
@christianfoghsrensen57445 жыл бұрын
Hahahah you know the list is wrong when Danmark is number 3 for ease of starting a new business, it is so hard in Danmark! our government is against letting people go self-employed, people are actually talking about, going into politics and making it easier to be self-employed. however, let's cut to the case. It is way easier in Spain, I don't know what this list is actually talking about if it's literally ease, or the ease of success, however, I know people in both Danmark and Spain, that owes a business, and almost everything about it is easier, it is not easy to start a business in Danmark, you need to get a lot of stuff, we have a lot of bureaucracy and well Spain does too. however, the success rate of a business in Spain is way higher than in Danmark. I know a couple owning a Restuarant in Danmark for 13 years, they now owe the government over 2 Million crowns, that's about 290000 euros. In Spain, it is Mostly profit all the way from the turning point where you have finish the restaurant and have earned the money use used to build your business.
@christianfoghsrensen57445 жыл бұрын
it's actually cost less to start a Restaurant in Spain than it cost just to buy the building in Danmark. plus you still get the higher rent for the building you have to pay every month, and it can easily get higher than your earnings for driving the business.
