Large structures such as bridges and dams, need to be monitored at regular intervals to avoid any fatal accidents. These are done with the help of strain gauges.
Strain gauges are small structures that are pasted on an object with an adhesive. A change in the shape of the object leads to a corresponding change in the strain gauges and thus, the deformation can be early detected. Since the changes are small they are monitored using a Wheatstone Bridge.
Strain gauges are widely used in the geotechnical field. They are also used to measure the amount of torque needed to run motors and are attached in the structural load-bearing paths of aeroplanes.
