Isaac before you put a new hatch, fan, or a/c unit on the roof you need to at least pressure wash it. Not only will that give you a better mating surface for mounting/sealing but it will also keep dirt from working it's way under the new seals due to vibration. Love the bus, good job fixing the alternator. 👍

Hello Ike. Something just in case you don't already know. If I remember right, The right hand wall of the bus is also an escape. The wall, in the center is designed to be able to kick out if need be in an accident. It's an extra escape if the bus rolled over on its top. You may not want to attach anything to the wall on that side. A little to much weight on the center of that wall could cause it to pop out. You really need to check this and make sure I'm right. I drove a school bus for several years here in Ga. Ga busses have a pop out wall on the right side. N.C law may not require busses to have a pop out wall. But, If you don't know, you need to know before you start working on the inside lay out and attaching things.

As a former RV owner I recommend a product called ETERNABOND. It's similar to a rubber butyl and once its on, it stays on. It's great for sealing upper roof holes. As to the altenator I found the best thing to do is get an extra elbow below your standard one..
@greylocke1002 жыл бұрын
Second the Eternabond. I used it to seal a replacement roof vent on my mom's RV. She had had the vent replaced/repaired twice and they repair place used the standard butyl tape. The tape lasted about 1 year since her RV as stored outside in the sun. The Eternabond was still going strong 3 years after I installed it.
@mirage3k2 жыл бұрын
Generally speaking I consider any tape a "patch" vs a "repair". But If you are going to use tape, Eternabond is 100% the tape you want to use. That tape will almost certainly outlast whatever you are applying it to.

A few helpful tips for you. If the base if your roof hatch is cracked then replace it, it not keep it cleaned and sealed. Rv products like Dicor Lap sealant will be better than silicone. You location of your black tank on the chassis will dictate where the toilet goes, and then shower will be next. All other camper things can be adjusted for space or convenience. Also don't forget the lp system will need to be mounted under the body and secured to the frame. New laws are in effect that it has to be inside of frame rails. I am a certified RV tech so if you need any answers I can help with let me know

Thanks for addressing the jackers that hit your Channel. They have hit others that I watch. But one thing about your bus that you haven't explained at least I don't remember you mentioning it is how well and structurally strong they are built. Federal government requires certain specifications for safety on these vehicles they are very safe when you're inside so they are highly sought after. As for working on the engine any compartmented engine is a bitch to work on as I'm sure you know but you swapped out that alternator like a champ great content thank you very much Isaac have a great weekend.

I was going to bring this to his attention also,about the weight.. As for carrying a water container,needs to be over the framework. Water can be heavy..Set up like an RV hook up,water power,the solar panels are a good idea.location is definitely going to be a problem, look in to fold up bed and table, shower,sink,and toilet should be close together as to not run plumbing all underneath. Keep that on one side or in the back.aparment sized refrigerator, for your perishable 's.....small cabinets low so your not banging your head
@davolbc2 жыл бұрын
@@paulpetty9338 agreed on all your ideas. There are tons of content out there on conversions but here's a couple points I would make in addition to yours. He would probably only need a 20 gallon potable water tank because water weighs approximately 8 lb per gallon* 20 is 160 lb about the same as a grown man if you call John a grown man haha. Just kidding John. As far for refrigeration I have a 3.0 cubic feet refrigerator freezer in my bedroom and it has separate drawers for the freezer and the refrigerator and it's frost free I picked it up at Lowe's for around $275. For solar he could have fold up panels and place them outside for Optimum sunlight but there's where you come into the money for the inverter wiring so forth and so on I'm sure some things will be run 12 volt and others like maybe an outlet or two plus the refrigerator and possible water heater at 120 volts. Plus he'll need storage tanks somewhere for gray water and black water I suppose the small commode or toilet will have a capture tank how he's going to figure out draining that I do not know. And then uses many LEDs as you possibly can. I figured by the time he gets done with it he's going to have so much fun going out on his own looking forward to those videos. Great acquisition to your collection of vehicles Isaac.

Hi Issac...love your channel as well as Cars and Cameras. On your bus might I recommend making a portable outdoor shower. It would save a lot of interior space and you can make your own out of pvc and pressurized air or install a water tank underneath and use a dc water pump. You could also use a portable propane water heater if you wanted in case the weather was cold. A lot of overlanders use this type set up. Not ideal at events because you most likely will need to catch water, but you could make a drain pan and collect the water and empty later. Alot of people use a Porta potty tent and run their shower hose inside. Just a thought so you could save some interior space. Also I agree with David Jerigan with the solar panels. A couple of panels with a Jackery (or such) would power lights, phone and a computer to up load videos and watch movies. However, if you need to run tools, compressors, air-conditioning! etc a generator would be better. Knowing your skills and experience, I'm sure you thought about some if not all these of these things, but thought I would throw them out for consideration as you decide just how you are going to use the bus.
@mirage3k2 жыл бұрын
On my 3rd schoolie now and the best advice I can give is plan it all out first, then start building. For the water you need to decide if you are adding a grey/black tank under the bus or not. If you are then the location of the sink/shower/toilet may be more or less predetermined. It looks like a real solid platform to start from, I look forward to seeing where it goes from here.

Oooh, A/C in the garage! I like it. I've seen a lot of people with those put the shower stall outside with the showerhead on the side of the bus and a curtain that goes around you. Then they use a pallet with some type of pad to stand on. Just have to be careful how you park so it's on the side away from everyone.
@warrendragon742 жыл бұрын
As for the camper aspect , I'd go with a tankless water heater and place the shower opposite side from your fuel tank if using a black/grey water tank with that shower. Built a few skoolies and learned a lot on how to balance the "fluid weight" of your rig when using additional tanks/ballasts doing an rv conversion. Now the lexan boat hatch I could see you doing , lol. If you do , put it over the "bedroom" or shower area getting the best use of natural light and "opens" the room (pun intended) ..... Thanks for replying on the naval movie too. Best of fun in Colorado to you.

That emergency hatch is priceless. You can make a stowable, hook-on ladder (with feet; not swinging) and this could be access to your drone launch pad on the roof. You don't have a drone? 🙀 Well you will just have to get one! As soon as you recover from the alternator purchase. I am glad that worked. It totally sucks when your charging system doesn't work. Please don't carry any bikes or anything on the roof. There are too many low bridges in the world. It will ruin your day. Seen the 11' 8" (now 12' 4") Bridge videos? FlexTape yo! I bet you could seal that all up with it, use it like dynamat and do the entire roof And you'll want a secondary battery to keep her starting, with marine or RV A/B/A+B switch if you have onboard 12v pumps and such or running an inverter for 110V AC for other conveniences

Nice work. Maybe if it still leaks, a couple dozen pop rivets might keep it together? TBH if you aren't going to change the emergency hatch to a clear marine hatch (which would be cool) I would just remove it all together and cover the hole with sheet metal. It's not a school bus anymore and not required. I think the spaces under the bus for plumbing is going to dictate where the shower and toilet go, especially if you are putting in holding tanks. Sorry for the long comment, I'm looking forward to this series.

Definitely go for replacing the emergency exit, even one from a motorhome in an appropriate size (given it's being made into a camper, it's a suitable mod), or the boat door idea is a good one too, given they're watertight, cos boats are best kept dry inside after all... :P

If you want to seal that properly, then you need to do couple things. When you replace it, clean the surface with mineral spirits or denatured alcohol until you get all the old stuff off including any dirt, and are oils from your hands. Find you a tube of NP1 sealant, it's the best thing they've come up with since EPA took butyl rubber away some 20 years ago. What it does is it will get a tough dry outer shell on itself, but the inside of the "shell", for description purposes only. The inner part of it never gets cures like the outside of it does, which allows it to flex with the metal around it. Either from expansion due to temperature differences, because the plastic will probably heat up, and cool faster than the metal does. Plus as the body of the vehicle twist, and moves as you go around corners, over humps an bumps during your driving it wherever you may go. It allows the two different materials to move as they will during the different seasons, and surfaces you will drive over going wherever you go. It also last a good amount of time, and so it's not something that you will constantly have to worry about, but just make a mental note to check it once a year. Also remember that such plastics are known for breaking down, causing they to become brittle, warp, and even shrink up a good deal too. So if possible park it under a carport away from the sun, which will cause it to deteriorate quickly.

Shouldn't that swinging stop sign on the side of your toy hauler say "It'll Be Fine" of something that expresses yourself? Eagerly watching to see what you do with it and I'm extremely envious of your garage. Lost my nice sized garage when I had to sell my last house (due to divorce) had a choice of buying a 2 bedroom house with a large garage or a five bedroom house without a garage. Needed the larger house for the kids. My machine shop is all stashed away in a trailer, a small workshop and one of the rooms in my basement. At least I have no mortgage and can leave my house to the kids without burdening them with that. Watching you, John and Charles working in your garage helps me to deal with my loss. Hey & Howdy! Most of those hatches were bedded using butyl tape, which stays fairly pliable, depending... I've used a product called Kool Seal for 25-30 years, its an acrylic coating. Also has a bedding/patch compound that comes with a mesh tape for bridging gaps. I've used the coating on buses, mobile homes, etc (heck even on a boat, lol). I normally recoat around 7 years, definitely stays white... As for the shower, with limited space, you may want to think about outside (no gray water tank then). I've used solar shower bags, pump up bug sprayers, & propane heaters with 12v pumps. Lots of options depending on how involved ya want for camping. Good luck with the project, you'll sure have fun with it. Thanx !

I’d suggest you go to harbor freight, get about 8 magnets. Use them to suspend a shower curtain, or two, over the steps coming into the bus. No need for a drain. The ONLY time you’re going to WANT to shower is after you’re really dirty after a day of Mini-Mayhem. You can put the sink near the steps and pull the faucet head over and use it. Then hose all the mud out. A 4 window bus is SHORT. A shower is rarely used. Just my opinion. FYI. I have a 6 window E-450 with a 7.3 that I’ve lived in off and on for 2.5 years. It’s awesome.

Issac, If you're going to replace the emergency exit with a new one, before installing it and after pulling off the old one, pull the other roof stuff off and give it a good cleaning then roll on a couple coats of Henry Tropi-cool roof coating then reseal and replace the roof stuff and install the new emergency exit. Not only will it help keep the seams weather tight but will help keep the inside cool during use in the summer.

Ike, have you considered adding a platform to the roof? Similar to what you see at NASCAR races, where people have basically large luggage racks on the roof of their RV's to sit up and watch the race from. I've seen a few built out of 1.5" square tubing and treated plywood. You could even use it for more storage, or as I've seen one Schoolie they use theirs to put up a large tent on the roof to increase their sleeping space.

make sure you check the local laws about converting the schoolbus , there some places where you cannot run the schoolbus logo's or even use the colour yellow for it , there even more places where its illegal to have the amber lights up on the top front and rear and have the stopsign outside of it (the stopsign might actually make a nice mancave item though) something i would definitely add to the bus is a roof deck with a ladder off the back of the bus , that way you can use the bus as a stage at places like bosco beach or other meets i would make the mounting points for that deck on the sides of the bus , to the pillars in between the windows , its a lot eazier to prevent leakage that way when bolting it on through and through compared to going straight down through the roof itself , the deck should allso create some insulation from the sun beating down on top of the roof another thing would be to install a towhook , you whont be able to tow a lot because of the overhang on the back of the bus but a small trailer with a few bikes and or karts or towing a small car should be doable as for the interior build out , starting on the drivers side going from the front to the rear of the bus : i would put an electric coolbox next to the drivers seat with the lid opening away from the seat , a little to the back and raised so it can be used as a arm rest small side table and the driver can reach in without bending over behind the driver i would make a long table top along the windows with two or three kitchen cabinets below it and use the emergency pop out exit windows as the first two / three windows on that side , reason being that you can take those out and use the bus to sell merch from to the people outside , using the "kitchencounter" for the register and to package stuff the rest of the counter will be open underneath to allow a barstool to be placed under it so you can use it to put the laptop on and work on video's prolly could use a "house battery" with a switch for charging it of the motor when its running and a converter intoo 110 volts for the laptop and possibly an entertainment system , can carry a small portable generator with you set it outside under the bus and chained to one of the leafsprings when in use (these things tent to stick to peoples fingers for some reason) the stove can be a simple propane camping stove with those propane canisters , the sink could be a simple tub that when not in use you can store in the kitchen cabinets , you could allso tabe a barbeque with you and use charcoal to cook you can set a tub on the counter to wash the dishes or veggies , you can use jerrycans for fresh and dirty water , though you could allso trow the content of the tub out intoo nature when youre done after the kitchen and desk surface theres a bunk bed along the side on each end of the emergency exit , that way you can then sleep four inside the bus and store stuff under the bottom bunkbeds and since the emergency exit is still open you could park bikes and stuff in between the beds wile traveling moving along at the other side passed the bunkbeds on that side , you could put up a composting toilet (dealing with black water sucks ) , to get some privacy you could hang up a shower curtain around it , though while on the road you'll prolly use the nearest a gasstation and duriing camping you prolly put it outside of the bus and do you number ones behind some bushes its eazier to trow out the compost too , you can just treat it like cat litter , there a few kits or plans available to build youre own , i would include a small exhaust fan inside the place where you store it though moving on quickly away from the smell toward the rest of the space behind the entrance opposite the driver could be used for a couch that way the passengers are still able to see out the front and talk to the driver , might be a little difficult to find lap belts that are long enough to bolt to the floor and will work with the couch as for a shower , there these nifty bags available you can lay out in the sun to warm up the water and shower , if you shower outside you dont need to use up valuable space inside the bus for a showerstall and it saves time for the buildout of the bus alexnld.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/90e12dbe-5a3f-4a9b-9ec7-730e2e45c8de.jpg if youre traveling with 4 you prolly need a few of those bags and since the sun usually isnt up long in the morning you can usually only shower during the afternoon i seen those rubber playroom tiles with the puzzle style interlocking edges , i bet that makes for great floorcovering inside the bus as it can get wet and dirt will just wash off , you can use a broom on it too , look a little like those garage tiles but made of foam rubber and smooth so walking over it with bare feet doesnt make things uncomfortable as for the emergency hatch , these things are notorious for leaking , i seen a few buildouts on youtube , i allso seen the shiphatch thing but there expensive since you guys have the plasma cutter you can either make a plate remove the hatch and cover the hole up or make a thick sheetmetal ring thats wider than the glasfibre lip on the hatch but fits over it , and use that with the original row of screws to clamp down on the glasfibre ring to make it sit flatter to the roof metal (maibe drill the holes bigger and use bolts and nuts to get more clamping force ) than add a bunch of silicone under the metal ring and add another row of screws along the edge of that while you have the sheet laying on the plasmacutter you can make coverplates for the top lights and stopsigns too and remove those / cover the holes up , there a few websites that sell these covers and ask a pretty steep price for them , might be able to make some cash to cut them to order for others what i seen a lot of these builders use on rv roofs is henry tropi cool roofpaint , its a thick silicone paint that seals everything another thing i seen a lot of the busbuilders do is strip all the sheetmetal out of the interior , tear a lot of the old unneeded wiring out then add insulation and a lot of wood to the interior and roof , they allso tear out the original flooring , then repair and paint the metal under it if youre smart you dont do that and just put carriage bolts in all the holes left by the seats with sme silicone around it and add material (rubber floortiles) over the top , might even leave the black rubber flooring on there as its a b@tch to get off , might not even bother with insulation as youre not going to live in it or take it out in the winter as long as the floor isnt rusted through or the wood rotted leave it , it will save you a ton of time and money

@@isaacitllbefine7231 I agree with the Tropicool. I did the top of my leaky 5th wheel and stopped all leaks. You can't really paint this stuff; it's too thick. I removed all of the silicone and sanded the roof down after pressure washing it. I placed tape with a light steel wire in it to help zip a clean edge after the tropicool dries. Then hand brush applied edges making as thick as possible. I pored it on the roof in small batches and pushed it around the roof with a roller. It's so thick the roller is not likely to roll. I've had it on now for about 4 years with not a single leak. Finish coat is about 3/16-1/4" thick with one coat. P.S. the silicone caulk you put around the top is a very temporary repair. A house does not move, but the skin of a bus or trailer does. You did not clean the surface on the roof. Sorry for the bluntness, but I resealed my roof several times with the prescribed RV repair and it still leaked. I have rotten roof as a result.

As for the shower, I believe I would place it on the passenger side in the area right behind the stairs. If possible put the toilet directly behind that. This will keep your plumbing close to the same area. Just my thoughts.

I would check underneath the bus for room to place the wastewater and supply tanks and factor that into the placement of the bath and kitchen placement. It might make the plumbing a little easier.

Definitely tint the man-van or mobile condos windows . Know you weren’t asking us to name it. Lol keep in mind it’s easier to keep all your water supplies on same side of your mobile palace so you don’t have water lines running in all directions underneath. lol

Maybe look for an old camper/travel trailer as a parts source. Water tanks, propane hot water tank/fridge etc. And when you’re done, scrap the body and make a utility trailer from the chassis.

I drive a 2003 model for the school I work for . Good units for sure definitely worth it to make a camper . Also look for RV rubber roof coating . Much better an durable for the roof

Will an air conditioner fit where the escape hatch is?
@12gaugeCharlee2 жыл бұрын
Do an outdoor shower to save inside room and drainage. And do a couch\bed to save additional room. maybe a small corner toilet with a 10 gallon grey tank. go minimalist as possible
@wallbanger19682 жыл бұрын
Another idea is a roof-mounted air conditioner in that location, if one fits in that location.

I spent years working with a Maglite between my teeth and screwed them (my teeth) up bad. I might suggest installing a bite wing cap on the back of your light to save your teeth. I got mine through Maglite.

Being that your making a camper out of it I would put a high amp alternator in it eventually. I use to do car audio and I always got my alternators from conversion vans from junkyards they worked great and I only gave 30 to 40 dollars for them
@billwilliamson98422 жыл бұрын
hopefully you upgraded to a higher amp/same size case alt if at all possible. You'll appreciate that later. Definitely put a reversible fan in that emergency openin, you'll also appreciate that later. if you get one with a rain sensor, make sure to put that on a switch, the sensor will drain your battery. Also put house type window screens over your windows, you'll love the breeze with all the windows down and the fact you keep bugs out. I went with 5% ceramic window tint and 65% no see um solar screen for my screens Really helps keep the temps down inside the bus which is a huge factor in warmer months and keeps out those nasty little gnats. The bathroom/shower inside idea wasn't for me. I just use a 6 gallon bucket with a toilet seat lid, double bag it with pellitized pine beddin in it from tractor supply as the absorbent/odor helper, much easier and no nasty cleanup. Just drop it off at a public trash can like people do a baby diaper/doggy doo bags. the shower I went with a outside shower tent and garden sprayer type setup. again less hassle and saves space inside the bus which is at a premium on a short bus like yours and mine. Moisture buildup/mold can be a problem in these bus builds, so another erason i like a outside shower. You can get a cheap gym membership to one of the chain gyms that have locations nationwide and use that to workout and take a shower. I put a twin bed across the back, takes up a lot more room then you think once its all in place but that was one area i wouldn't compromise with my bad back. I figger on the road i can simply use a truck stop bathroom or if i park at a rv park i can use their bathroom/shower facilities. same for the #2 breaks, my bucket is mainly for a "gotta go this second" thing, otherwise i'll use gas stations, rest stops etc. I kept the wheelchair lift on mine as I use it to load/unload my honda monkey and my mini bikes. with the monkey in place and lift, i lost about half the space in the bus but that was another must have for me as i travel/camp. I can go on and on but we'll bs at busco beach and you can check out some of the things I did and why i did them that way. I'm still not 100% done with mine, like to add a sink/cooktop area maybe and some overhead storage over what used to be the pass seats in the bus, and maybe a outside awnin of some sorts, but not sure on that just yet. I look forward to this build, you will love it. A encloses trailer might be the solution to carry the bikes in as you travel, that would allow the room for more things in the bus. Likely what i'll do if i start to hit these powersports events across the country.

Most of the bus, and rv chassis I have seen. Use the strongest alternator available at the time. That said. I have seen people get factory alternators, reworked. To put out more current. Unfortunately in many cases it can also shorten the lifespan of the part. That said. I recognized the alternator Issac installed. For that generation of van/truck chassis. It was the strongest(120-140 amp) if I'm right. The other one offered in that generation was eather a 105amp or an 85amp... they were pretty much cookie cutter vehicles.
@billwilliamson98422 жыл бұрын
@@greenevegiebeast Yea I just meant, if thee was a upgrade, to make sure to do it. Thats all. I have a 2013 Chevy express thomas built "my bus" model turned camper/toy hauler. I love it, way better then a similar sized rv to me. I think it has a 140 amp alternator but they did offer higher amp alts in a larger case from what i found out.

Isaac Ya can find a seal for that hatch, at an RV shop. but use a new metal flange and nut and bolt to seal it. I don't remember the name of the stuff, but it is a rubber flat two sided tape. about a 1/8 thickness,
@wadetyler50562 жыл бұрын
I would just remove the hatch and put a sheet metal cover over it then coat the roof with white mobile home roof sealant. A small window mount air conditioner is more efficient and easier to replace when needed.
@drewlear15852 жыл бұрын
Ditch the emergency exit and install a door hatch. That way you can install a party deck on top of the roof!

G'day mate, the go-to product to use when you are trying to keep out water is Sikaflex. It is a pain to work with but it is what boaties use on boats. Clean with alcohol and use masking tape to keep it where you want it. Sikalex is difficult to clean up. Imagine trying to use baby shit in a tube!

Rig up an outdoor show that can hang off the rear emergency exit door. That way it can be tall enough To accommodate your hight comfortably.
@redneckbryon2 жыл бұрын
I was going to suggest a skylight style window for an emergency exit, definitely a better idea, let some more natural light in through the top. You should consider an outdoor shower, to help save on space inside the bus, since space is limited and why waste it on something that could be outside.
@Damage_Incorporated.2 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure, but i think, at least in NC, if it's not being used as a school bus any more, you have to remove the flip out stop sign. Just FYI. Also, if you aren't going to put on a roof deck and use the hatch for access, you should check out a Max Air fan unit to fill the hole. (that's what she said)
@cadmonkey9282 жыл бұрын
For the shower and toilet location it maybe depends on your plumbing and where you can run pipes and grey water tank underneath the bus. Where is the best spot for those?

once ya get things sealed up and start working on the insides, maybe see what you can do with power, lots of van lifer stuff and could be useful to have battery/powerinverter and solar that can handle power tools and such.
@watahyahknow2 жыл бұрын
makes it a little harder to ancor the passenger side bunkbeds other than to the sidewall but you could put the composting toilet next to the energency door in the back then do the bunkbed and couch , you could close in the rear wall of the bunkbed and have an inclosed nook to do youre "business" on the pot
@garyzurasky73122 жыл бұрын
I would go for a step down shower at the rear for extra headroom. There's always the option of an outdoor one too. Why not both?
