I think you just have to spread the grass seeds and fertilizers that have weed killer built in. It gets expensive which is why I don’t do it.

Pull them out as soon as you notice them. Eventually your lawn should be weed free. It's easy work when the weeds are tiny and never let any weeds go to seed x.

Just a heads up......the fiberglass ladders will eventually deteriorate with prolonged exposure to the sun. My husband is an electrical contractor and we had to replace several ladders recently. They are primarily stored on ladder racks on top of the service vans. We have now decided to keep our larger ladders in an interior storage area and only pull them out when needed. When the fiberglass coating begins to breakdown, it will stick in your skin and itch terribly. It may take years to happen, but it sure isn’t fun to get that on your skin. Keep up the good work. Your videos have inspired me to work on my landscape. I recently purchased PW Petunias and joined the PW mailing list. I’ve enjoyed browsing my PW idea book that I received in the mail. I really appreciate the information you share. I’m learning a lot. 😊👍

Normally they do not wrap the collar around the tree. They loop it around leaving oneside open so you don't choke the trunk.

You’re right on staking only when there is an issue. Another commenter on a video a few months back (who I don’t remember being super polite, but shared a good resource) recommended a blog called The Garden Professors, where some extension center researches share a lot about studies and best practices, including trees. In their list of recommendations, they say, don’t stake a tree when you plant it. Stake a tree only once there’s a problem and it’s clear that it’s needed! It was a very interesting blog, and helpful for me to read about best practices for trees, since my city’s landscaping guidelines are woefully out of date with best practices (eg, they recommend use of root barriers, which as far as I can tell, don’t work at all to direct roots downward, may harm the tree’s root formation, and definitely pollute the soil with brittle plastic bits based on the empty old one I dug out of our parkway!) i think your conservative corrections during the season sound like the way to go!

My husband and I have planted over 700 trees in our lifetime. We usually always used wire, but threaded it through an old piece of hose so the wire would not touch the tree. Plus, we never wrapped the hose around the tree, only one side and then used light fence post for the anchors. We also anchored it on 3 sides. Lots of work but in the end, very worth it. Thank you for your videos and I’m so glad the “pizza car” didn’t kill the tree! Happy spring!

All of my bulb pots started to grow on one side and I worried about them being lopsided too. In the end the other side did a pretty good job of catching up and they turned out great! You might still have a pretty show. Hope so! :)

I live in a super windy area (40 - 75 mph wind gusts) & we have to stake trees. I personally recommend staking lower down on the tree because the wind took the entire top of one of our trees off. Everything below the "strap" was fine but above the strap snapped right off in a bad storm.😭 Obviously y'all are much more knowledgeable than I am, just sharing what happened to me so hopefully it doesn't happen to anyone else.

We often took a garden hose piece and strung the string through the garden hose piece and use that around the tree it protected the tree in a larger way!

This is how my dad did our trees. Only when necessary & only for a short while. He wanted strong trees he would say, but not crooked ones. All the trees he planted were nice & straight trees . Great for climbing for us girls. LOL LOL! Our dad was always yelling at us monkeys to get out of his trees! LOL LOL!

We had an autumn blaze maple planted 2 years ago. The arborists staked it, but the straps allowed some natural movement of the tree. We were told that the stakes help prevent the tree from tipping over while it establishes itself, but leaving wiggle room is key. We were told to leave the stakes for 6-12 months, but absolutely no longer because that's when it starts to damage the trunk, and it prevents the roots from establishing well enough to support the tree on their own. We pulled the stakes last spring and it's been holding it's own, even during tornado season.

We are having a few windy days here in SW PA. Up to 20 mph gusts. It's miserable. Can't get anything done outside and twigs, branches and debris everywhere. I can only imagine what 70 mph gusts on a regular basis would be like. You guys have created an oasis in a rather unforgiving climate. Kudos.

I attended a free county seminar on trees in AZ a few years back--- everything from planting to pruning, even received a free tree. They said when a young tree sways in the wind it responds by sending its roots deeper & wider to anchor the tree, thus creating a stronger tree. Also if a tree is planted correctly, it should not need to be staked, as you said don't usually do. But if a stake is used, such as for a correction, the tree should still be able to move in the wind & should not be staked more than 1 year. And the loop around the trunk should be large so as the tree trunk diameter increases the loop is not digging into the trunk.

I heard the same things from the friend of a friend. His parents had a nursery so I figured it must be true (before internet)! 😉 Interestingly he used his wife's old pantyhose to provide leeway for the tree to sway some in the wind. Obviously that was awhile ago, does anyone even wear pantyhose anymore?! 😁

I was wondering, when Aaron was showing the different kinds of stakes he had chosen, how the auger one was going to work. It seems like it would be creating a hole larger than the stake so the stake would then be wobbly. Hopefully when it rains the dirt will settle in the hole and become more stable over time. I like to plant my trees with the lean towards the prevailing wind. So over time the tree naturally grows straight. My dad always stacked the first year but then took the stacks out after. Great job.😊

Loved watching you two working together. Your love for each other shines through. In Florida, all newly installed trees are staked for the first year. Probably because of hurricane season. Our trees are staked below the canopy and the strap is never looped twice around. Can't wait to see the fall display this year. Love, love, love watching you guys. I’m so glad you did this video. Last year after you planted all those maples I scoured thru all garden center and found one. I planted it even took a leveler out there to make sure it was straight. Jumping forward to now in mid Michigan I noticed a couple of weeks ago my maple was leaning. I pulled at it and was thinking of digging around root ball to get it to straighten. So glad you did this video. Will try it your way. And your right the wind I’m sure changed the direction of tree.

That’s something new for me. In Europe we stake all trees and it is recomended by specialists as kind of important thing to do especially in cities. Apparently as many practices as there are countries :)

I think the reason that auger stake was wobbly is that is essentially creating a hole as you drilled it in, much like using the planting augers. But I like the idea of it! (And you joist drill!)
