Nature's first green is gold. But I think having your old car will really bring back those memories. One of the things I'm taking away from this series is I need to capture more videos of my family life. The videos you have from your youth and the ability to interweave into a modern story is terrific. I want to capture more videos of my boys (6&4) so later in life I can look ok back on them when my memory might not be as fresh.

"Never meet your hero's" admit it, this is the best thing you've ever bought, right? I'm 58, finally bought an ex army defender, I now spend my life replacing parts and every evening I'm going to sell it, it's got to go, etc, but then .....

But once you've sorted it, it will last you the rest of your life - unless some oik pikeys it. The key is to do it properly, not cut corners and use genuine/oem parts where possible. BTW for defender - have you checked out Britainnia Restorations? Thing is, Andrew seems to have gone into this with his eyes open, knowing what he's let himself in for so none of what he needs to do to it is a surprise which is more than most of us can say!

I crossed the Nullabor from Perth to Melbourne in 1980 in a 1963 Morris 850 (Mini with smallest engine). I slept in the car in a fetal position on the back seat when the need arose. Took me five days to do the crossing. My back and backside drifted between the extremes of agony and complete numbness. When a semi over took me I would hang on to the steering wheel with an iron grip and my elbows braced/locked against my knees, lest be blown off the side off the road. Constant engine and road noise was so loud my ears were still ringing days after the trip was over. I only had one misfortune/incident during the trip in that one of my 4 new tyres I had fitted prior to leaving suddenly and without warning blew out 2/3rds the way across the Nullabor. By the time I could stop I was running on the rim and the tyre had all but completely disintegrated. The tyre was a Michelin XV?? too long ago, but to this day I have never bought another tyre of that brand. Did the crossing on two other occasions in Valiants, one of which was a 1969 VF Pacer without an incident. All the drama and worry is amusing for those that have crossed a few times.

Despite some other followers having a moan, I have to say this is probably my favourite series I've watched of yours Andrew. I thoroughly enjoy the overlanding videos (particularly the stock pickup with your daughter), but the mix of old footage of you working on your original RR, with the current trials and tribulations of getting such a lovely old vehicle ready for the long drive home is really nice. Plus it's nice seeing such great service from mechanics. Personally I love the way Range Rover Classics drive, but mine is a later model than this, and they definitely improved things along the way.

You could buy little rubber wedges to stop the side windows from slowly sliding open, had it for years.

Despite all the complaints and criticisms about these old Land Rovers one cannot dispute that these vehicles were made to be user-serviceable. That to me is very important especially in a life-or-death situation. My 300Tdi Discovery left me stranded in a car park from a bad starter motor. No fault of the marque itself (it was a no-name knock off part after all). But I take comfort in the fact that it takes 15-20 minutes end-to-end to pull the bad one off and put a new one on with little more than a set of spanners and sockets. Being bush-repairable is very appealing to me as a LR owner and something we have now sadly lost.

It was by luck that i diagnosed my problem myself. Once it happened it happened again but then i used thread lock on the nuts keeping the fan in place and it hasn't happened again but the first time the fan came loose and made noise my stomach churned fearing the worse. Glad you got your problem sorted.

It is very obvious from the in cab footage just how amazing the visibility in those things is. Come on Andrew! Damp the old range rover and get a new prado, so no more anxiety about break downs, and enjoy overlanding...

It's a 45 year old car. Do you really think I bought it because I was looking for something reliable? I was looking for a story. Crossing in a Prado would be no story at all.

As a Melbournian on my first visit it felt like more of a country town! In hindsight that may have been due to just passing through on a drive from Perth to home with only dinner and an overnight stay in the city. I've since returned and it felt like a city, albeit a city that one can escape without too much effort. The adventure aspect was provided by The Big Blackout on that visit!

I used loads of those self adhesive pads, together with at least one layer of "waterproof" insulation in my Classic and had a couple of cms of insulation under the bonnet. Certainly reduced the noise level and was much warmer in the winter (probably not a problem in Australia).

Always been a Chevy guy, but that all changed once i purchased my RRC lwb . Quirky, yes! Electrical, questionable! Under powdered most definitely! However, this truck is pretty damn cool..Cheers Andrew!

It reminds me of my first long drive in my (then new to me) 2010 RR, London, to Leiden (NL), Hamburg (return), Paris (return), back to London, in 1 week. It is the same RR I currently drive in NZ. Have to say, it is way more comfortable then my 1989 Classic I had ages ago ;)

@@4xoverland ;P I remember blasting down a farm road in the south of the Netherlands (at night when my light switch decided to give up the ghost, Lukas, the Prince of Darkness struck again) and indeed it wasn't the most comfortable experience even by the standard of the those days (mid 90s). Still I would love to have one again, just as a classic restomod, occasional driver. And that is my suggestion for you Andrew, just turn it into a fun restomod that you only drive when you want to :) as it will never be a great overlander or daily driver.
