If you can not weld when you first get your landrover you soon have to learn. When I got my first landrover the next thing I needed was a welding set, all part of the fun of landrovers. This video is what the landrover hobby is all about working at home on a driver way or small garage.👍

I know how scary it is when I come to pick up the first tool but I pick up the tool and keep going because the end goal is amazing. So many people let fear stand in the way and your videos I hope will encourage folks to get outside of their comfort zone and go for it. Stop apologising and enjoy what you are doing. You have challenged me today to pick up a welder and maybe build a bike!

In 1998 or 99 I bought my first LR. It was a 1969 IIA 109” Sta Wgn. Not finding any close to me, I drove 1,300 miles (each way) to get her. It needed some welding work and I bought what I could afford at the time: a second hand Craftsman MIG welder. Just like you, that’s how I learned. Practice is the key. The more you do, the better you’ll get at it. BTW, 7 Land Rovers and 21 years later, I still have it and it still works. Thanks for taking the time to make, narrate and upload your projects.

For someone who hasn't got a huge shed to work in, you're doing exceptional work. One of my mates commented that you can cut & weld on a customers Nissan Stagea rails any time. What a great job you are doing Sophie repairing your chassis. Your enthusiasm for your Landy is infective and takes me back 20 years when I had a series 2A. As plenty have already said, you don't need to apologise for doing the welding yourself. No one can learn anything without first doing it, perfection in anything takes time. The repairs look fine and I would be pleased to have achieved the standard you have with my first attempt.. Well done Sophie, looking for more video's as you progress, keep up the good work. I am a fabricator and weld quite a lot. Your welds look great for someone who has recently started! Instead of worrying so much about going from one thickness to the other try setting the welder towards the thicker metal and then you move normal speed on the thicker metal and then swoop a little quicker on the thinner metal. Just a little tip. Great job. I have to do this on my defender soon

Well done Sophie - having recently welded up parts of my 1970 Rover 2000 TC body I know how difficult welding is. Many years ago, as an engineering apprentice I became fairly adept at stick welding but that was on quite thick steel fabrications - I've never really had the same success with MIG. For a first try I think that you have made a very good job. Keep up the good work!!

You have done a good job. Mig prefers clean metal but as you have found it can be welded. If you started on Stick it is sometimes better to use that method on rust coated metal, it blasts to clean metal better than mig does. Should be ok on chassis thickness but not panel or light steel. With that welder don’t be afraid to get some rusty metal scraps and give it a go.

Great work and well done for having a go, one thing to be aware of is when you score the metal to help give a nice bend you leave the grain of the metal open that will rust really rapidly, to help stop this if it does not interfere with the patch run a small bead of weld along the inside of the score after bending to re seal the grain prior to paint etc, this will help with rust, keep it up

Good job on the repairs. It's good to see you doing short tacks, and letting the heat dissipate. This prevents warpage and burning through. The welds look fine. It is hard to weld either rusty metal and/or different thicknesses of metal, and you are doing both. Nice fancy little welder you have there. :)

Looks solid enough! If you burn through let the hole cool then angle the welding tip as close to 90° as possible and then blip a blob edge on the hole so it looks D shaped, cool and fill at the same angle and it will bridge! Another technique I use for slightly larger holes is using thin strips that provide a stop for the mig wire and melt into the join. the t wash solution wil probably remove rust around welding areas to stop the metal from acting like a firework, looking great! Hope you get some decent weather,at least the leaves have fallen off!!!:)

Look at a set of step drills to clean up holes, as using large drill bits can result in snatch lock ups when the drill stalls, or even a large countersink. ALDI did have a cheap titanium coated set recently. Keep learning, and do not worry about mistakes, best learning experience we have!
