Land Rover MOT Time - Rear Chassis Repair

Back between lockdowns 1 and 2 I had to get an MOT on the truck.
Unfortunately, what I thought would be a tiny welding job turned into a much bigger job than anticipated.
Luckily, a good friend was due to visit, a friend who has much better welding skills than me!
Much beer was drunk, and much welding was done!
The truck is now MOT positive! :)
** Not the best quality video I'm afraid. I was only shooting it on my phone for posterity, but there turned out to be enough footage to make it into a video at least a couple of people might be interested in! **

Going thru all that trouble, and not drilling any drainholes or rust preventative fluids.. Your welder must love doing those, bcz he needs to do it again next spring. It only needs one half or even a quarter inch hole to the lowest point with dimple dye edge facing down for maximum drainage, or annual rust repair. Drilling it afterwards leaves shavings inside the structure, and an edge around the hole to block any drainage. Drainholes and oiling were the first things I learned on my time as a rust repair man.

Oil floats on water , so oil in the water trap section would not work .

If you clean off the chassis and tack a straight edge plate over it, you can cut along that plate with a skinny disc and weld the gap flush. Just do a few inches at a time and tap flush with hammer. It's way quicker that making template and cutting awkward shapes.

Space Shuttle designed using CAD, Land Rover repaired using CAD. Basically the same? I'm pretty sure you could get cardboard through the MOT, I've been spending a lot of time recently cutting out the floor of a card "welded" together with silicone sealant. Caused more problems than it solved, floor had 4 layers in places (and had rusted through all four in other places).

It's always very difficult to judge how bad internal corrosion is. I always go around the chassis with a little pointy hammer, and if there is a dull tone then you can expect there to be corrosion inside. This year was the worst corrosion I have had since I got the truck, but it had started from where the previous owner had a rear crossmember replacement done by a 'proper' garage, but they had made a right bodge of it. The new repair section has completely removed all the water traps, so I should have a bit of a better time with this. Though the other side might need doing next year!

many moons ago when i use to be a mot tester, the rule with rusty stuff was if there hole or you made a hole with your plastic hammer and it was within 30cm of something important like seatbelt mounts axle mounts etc it was a fail. if there is no holes but rusty you the tester have to decide will it last six months. also the rules favour the owner of the car, the rules were if your not sure pass and advise
