A suggestion I would make for making your space above your pantry into a functioning loft space, I would say, use a glass railing, then it still let's the light and everything through, while also making it a safer space, and then for access, just put up like a library style rolling ladder. I would love a space like that, and I wouldn't be able to not make it a cozy spot to chill, I couldn't let that view "go to waste"

Jeremy and Melissa, my deepest condolences and sympathy for you both and for the entire police force (along with everyone connected with them). You all are in my prayers. As I was watching this, I noticed just how somber the music was and I sort of questioned why the serious tone. My heart sank when I heard the news. I can’t imagine what you are feeling and going through right now. I did want to share something that I hope may help. I was thinking about what you were saying about wanting to enjoy the view from the loft area above the pantry area. I googled “low visibility railing for loft” and they have some wonderful options that I think may work for you guys. You may want to check that out, Melissa and Jeremy!

Finish the loft above the pantry with a wrought iron railing that while being structurally strong will also be unobtrusive and not block the view very much. Use it as a reading room, quiet study room or just a place to lounge and enjoy the view with a refreshing adult beverage.

I always thought your loft area above your pantry room would be the perfect space to have a relaxing reading nook / snug. Add a few bean bag chairs and it's the perfect spot to have hot coco and watch the snow fall. Look into rope, netting, cable or tension cable balustrade ideas that secure the area without blocking the light or air flow. Can also make a great feature. Often they include light fittings or climbing plants as well.

Your home is coming along. Heating while you work is a tough one. Barrel heaters put out more heat. Master craft makes one. You can also get flameless construction heaters that with proper steps taken before leaving will toast up a space. When bad things happen to those you are connected too, it's hard to just reflect and not respond someway. I hope everyone rallied around and once the snow melts you can travel to make peace with the lost and family. The dog needs a hug, bless his heart... Stay safe and warm.

Love to follow your family's journey. We were in the middle of an extreme remodel at the beginning of the Pandemic. Our contractor bailed as his partner split. They had completed the foundation and basic framing. We were forced to become the General Contractor. With the lockdowns we were the only ones who could actually work on the house. We had to do it ourselves. Thank God for KZbin. I think you could build a nuclear reactor with it. We did all our own electrical, plumbing, insulation, mechanical. We hire some for gas. Gas makes me nervous. That being said, our gas meter broke off when the contractor began work. Crazy story. We did drywall, mud and all finish including beautiful tile work. My wife and I became partners as never before. Our house is so beautiful. We believe we were more careful and thoughtful than most we worked with. We are so much closer now because of the struggle. I laugh, cry and smile with your minimal obstacles and massive triumphs. We can so relate to everything you do. Your children and so lovely. I graduated from Gonzaga so North Idaho was my playground. I miss it. Stuck in Seattle.

I love your loft, I think you should floor it and put extremely soft carpeting down put some little brackets on the inside so that when someone goes up there to hang out you can put in a portable railing for the time being. If it was me I would have my kids go up there when we had company and they could take sleeping bags and kind of camp out up there on the nice carpeting with the railings up and the company could sleep in their beds. I remember all my life when we had company my parents would send us in the living room with sleeping bags and the guests would get our bedroom. I know you want to keep it so you don't see anything which is why I suggested carpeting and a portable railing that you could just lay down in the back by the wall no one would see it and you wouldn't need it until you put it up

After two officers being laid to rest in one single week here in the greater Houston area; I started working on a campaign to highlight the acts of heroism, bravery and valor that LEO's are no longer recognized for. My ultimate goal is to create a scholarship fund that would be available to local graduates who wish to continue their education and enter into law enforcement. I will definitely keep you guys posted as I work with local agencies in my area, as well as bring other local business owners on board.

Weatherstrip the attic access. You can also put a heavy rock or a few bricks on top of the lid then cover it with fiberglass and staple plastic to look like a pillow.

I posted this over on your Facebook page, and copied it here: Prayers for Jeremy as you deal with the loss of Officer S. I'm sure it's even more devastating to learn it was a mistaken identity situation. 🙏 Re: the house, your progress is incredible, you keep stretching yourselves and learning new skills as you go. Best of all, you're reaching the point where it's really taking shape. Blessings, and hang in there!

I'm so happy for you all! I enjoy watching your adventures with your home build, children, horses, sheep, rabbits, dog, cats and your chickens. And come spring I'm looking forward to seeing your garden grow along with your fruit trees. Being 75 years old now makes me wish that I had done more when I was younger that I can no longer do now. God Bless You All! 🙂❤ I'm so sorry to hear about your difficult news. It's never easy to loose a friend or loved one. Prayers of comfort and peace.❤

I was also in Law Enforcement back home in Hawaii and I also lost a great friend and co-worker. It was difficult. We knowingly signed up for the job to protect everyone in our community and to keep our community safe from the evil all around us. Officer Sahota sounded like an amazing guy and I thank him for his service. Sending prayers to his ohana during this difficult time. Aloha.

AS a suggestion, build walkways in between the trusses as you will be up there on occasion. Also include lights to see your way around in there to. You will not regret it!! Lastly, use the window spray foam to use in those tight spaces where you cannot get insulation in. Been there, done that and have the tee shirt. Got those tips from a seasoned construction worker. Great video as always!!

Jeremy and Melissa, I wish you comfort and peace as you reflect upon the loss of an officer and a friend. Melissa, you are right about the loft being a great space. You can solve railing problem by using a tensioned cable railing like they use on decks. You will have the security of a proper barrier with very little disruption to that gorgeous view. Keep pressing on, you guys are doing a fantastic job!😎

We put a layer of insulation on the backside of our hatch cover even with all that blown going in around it you will still feel the cold on the hatch. Get yourself a infrared thermometer and you can quickly find the low temp spots. Over time (I've been here 43 years now) the blown insulation has settled to about half the "fluff" it originally was, not sure if the current blown insulation will do the same. Good job getting it done!!

Rear loft idea: Some kind of cable "railing" that won't obscure the light and view from below maybe? Fish around for some ideas. That little loft is too fine an escape nook not to try to use it. Your horses sure do seem to enjoy each other's company. Fun to watch them.

After cleaning up the blown in insulation after installation,some people stack furnace filters 2 and even 3 deep in order to keep their home heated using their new HVAC system while drywalling. The secret is to keep a close watch on your filters and clean up drywall dust daily. No reason to freeze from here on out!

More filters in the same return add restrictions to air flow. Not good for the hvac system
@FrugalBuilding
@FrugalBuilding 2 жыл бұрын
I agree with @Brian Pulst Sr. My experience with using our new HVAC system during a studs out renovation found that the HVAC can be used without any trauma to the system if a stacked filter (FPR4 covered by a FPR1) is used. The FPR1 collects the larger stuff while the FPR4 collects the finer dust particles without causing excessive restriction. Just keep an eye on the filters and change them out when necessary. These are cheap enough and provide good protection for your system. Keeping comfortable while building is conducive to getting more done. Also, use of kerosene fueled space heaters will produce lots of excessive moisture in the space.

I’m so sorry about your news. I will be praying for whoever it is. Heavenly Father knows who or what it is, so it will be ok. You are working so hard both of you. The house is coming along great ! The insulation will take off the cold in the house. How long before you get your toilet up and running? I’m so excited for you as I know you’ve waited two years to go potty lol 😂. Seriously though, it’s all coming together great. I’m at least glad that your house can now retain some heat. Thank you one again fir the snippets of the mountains 🏔 or the horses, even that cat and dog. God bless you all and the family concerning your difficult news. Hugs to Jeremy. ♥️🙏♥️🤗

You could do a spiral stair case up to that loft area..so you can keep the view and not have a bulky stairs in the way and use a metal thin railing so you get the most out of your view. I dont know how to send pictures but i wanted to show what i was talking about. thanks

Haven't gotten to the bad news yet , but can read into it ... but I love seeing the two of you working together to make this home come to light ... And Jeremy ,, Melissa taking your safety into priority is so heartfelt ,, She's forcing herself to eat all those chips to put a little lead in her backside ,just to provide ballast weight on the ladder so you won't fall ...man , that's true love .... ... At the end is now known ... Prayers for all in the circle of friends and family .... God Bless ....
