Thanks for putting this episode out there. As someone who had Ehlers Danlos Syndrome Hypermobility type I just wanted to make note that there are athletes out there that have EDS and don’t know it, where they are hypermobile in the majority of their joints. And you are correct about the muscles. Muscles fatigue more quickly in hypermobility than in a “normal” person. Once they get so tired they spasm, tremor, and just all around tighten up. Like my knees and and hips are my loosest and my hamstrings are so tight! Again thanks for putting this episode out there!

hello, i recently got diagnosed with benign hypermobility, im a 21 year old male and was dianosed with hypermobility when i was around 19 after an acl injury, though i had read that its diagnosed when youre around 12, is that normal? also during childhood i didnt experience any significant pain but did feel that my body was just a little extra flexible as compared to my friend like i could take big strides while running and was a good athlete. now i experience pain in a lot of pain in my joints also i feel that my spine kinda moves sometimes as i inhale etc. theses symptoms aggravated after i started working out is that normal? also what do you do to cope with the pain? also i retired from all form of sports did exercise help you gain a certain degree of fitness? thanks in advance!!

So accurate!! I have Hypermobile Spectrum Disorder and feel tight even after stretching and massages. And over-stretching often makes pain way worse. I also have no issues with mobility but it's difficult for me to build strength. I lift weights consistently and feel like I should be a lot stronger than I am for my size. :/

Same bro i’ve build a good strongman looking body but the flexibility really limits the muscle power. But hey atleast we’re healthy and blessed enough to exercise!

i saw something on the EDS society channel i think it was that had to do with endocrine disorders and lower testosterone in EDS meaning lower muscle mass building potential. i have been tested and have basically no testosterone, have always been skinny and unable to build much muscle (yes females need some too). our bodies are so complicated.

I am just finding out that I am hypermobile and it's explainging A LOT of issues I have had over the years. I stretched a hell of a lot for years and years (martial arts), but the older I got the more it hurt. Upon learning that I am hypermobile I found some advice about hypermobile people and how they actually should not stretch. So I stopped and the benefits have been huge. Oddly enough my actual flexibility and stretch have improved by not stretching. Mght be worth a shot if you haven't tried yet.

I’ve been wanting to look into weight training as someone who’s hypermobile but my pt didn’t seem to want to talk about that. He’s pointed out that I’m strong, i have good muscle, my joints just don’t want to hold. I’m not an athlete, I don’t really like sports, but I do enjoy exercising and love to watch videos like this even though I don’t have access to a gym or anything currently

Yup, completely relate to having been told my whole life I needed to stretch and only now at 21 do I know how much damage that has been doing to me.

My PT and most other resources have said strength training is the only escape from hypermobility issues. It's just way harder to achieve because we can't go crush it at the gym like "regular" people. Pilates, swimming, and anything engaging full body conditioning will help tone and condition our muscles. Targeting specific muscles is when/how I get injured.

Yes! I found functional fitness training in my late 30s having never done sports before of any kind, and it was also when I realized I was “different”. EDS runs rampant in my family, so I’m assuming I have some level of either it or generalized hypermobility. I have been working with a physical therapist on specific, minor muscle control, identifying laxity vs where I need soft tissue work, and building specific muscles to support the joints that are lax. Honestly this will be the only way to be able to push past my plateau in my training and keep up with the folks around me for years to come, but Ive benefited so much from this combination of muscle building in a functional fitness style mixed with physical therapy. One question I do have - is lack of proprioception common with hypermobility? I struggle A LOT with being able to identify and engage the correct muscle group when doing Oly lifts or even things like pull-ups.

Hi there. I'm not medically qualified, but I am hypermobile (waiting to see a rheumatologist for property diagnosis). From all the reading I have done, poor proprioception is definitely affected by hypermobility.

Hard to say without seeing you over the internet, but being hypermobile isn't a diagnosis. Most people I work with are hypermobile. We tend to focus on strength and dynamic stability to control that extra mobility.

i wouldn't. work on stabilizing. work up to smaller weights. don't just blow into something heavy or push yourself in ANY routine. i have torn so many things trying to do this, not realizing my "normal" range of motion is way beyond normal into unhealthy range where damage gets done.

So my dad jammed his pinky playing basketball and his distal phalanx is crooked now. The hospital gave him a lame splint. Could it fuse crooked and stay stuck like that. His appointment is for a whole month after the injury and he is not wearing a splint.

sure it could, he could probably make his own appointment. Often times ERs just set you up in their system but there's a whole world of docs you can go to!
