Men’s mental health is a topic that only recently is beginning to attract the attention it deserves. Relevant to addressing the global health crisis of male suicide, it is essential to consider how to work effectively with men in psychotherapy. Men often face unique psychological challenges shaped by societal expectations and traditional masculine norms. Cultural pressures to be stoic, self-reliant, and emotionally restrained can create barriers to emotional expression and seeking help. Many men struggle with issues like depression, anxiety, aggression, and identity crises, but are reluctant to engage in therapy due to fears of appearing weak, broken, or vulnerable. Understanding the intersections of masculinity with cultural, social, and personal identities allows for more nuanced and effective approaches to supporting men’s mental health. This presentation will explore useful strategies for working with men in psychotherapy, addressing key topics including the impact of societal stereotypes on men, challenges in emotional expression, identity formation, and meaning in life. Ultimately, improving therapeutic outcomes for men benefits not only individual clients, but also their families, workplaces, and communities.
