Thank you for sharing your son's story. My stepson came into my life at age 3. At that time he barely spoke a few words and none of them together. I found out he was autistic, with speech and developmental delays. His mom and dad share custody and she had him in preschool and then public school through 2nd grade, which was a complete failure for a child that doesn't speak. He was in speech therapy at the school with zero improvement by then. Enter 2020 and Covid and distance learning, which only made things worse. I talked his mom and dad into homeschooling and volunteered to buy, plan, and track everything. They finally agreed and we haven't looked back. I had to start him in mid-K for math in 3rd grade. He completed 1.5 years that 1st year. He's been slightly behind in other subjects but he is progressing in all subjects, and that's what matters. We have always used closed captioning on the TV when watching anything. It's funny the words he learned doing that, and it's helped in his reading tremendously. I believe the fact that you homeschooled from the beginning made a big difference for your son. My stepson wouldn't even talk to his teachers, so how was he going to learn? He talks to me all day long. He gets one on one attention in every subject, and we make school fun for him. We start around noon and take breaks so that he doesn't get tired. His focus time is limited, so if we need to do a long lesson, I'll break it up and put something else between the two parts. I always tell him I'm proud of him so he doesn't get discouraged, even if it was a hard day. Bottom line is, I met him where he is and give him the individualized attention he needs. It works wonders. When he started picking up books that we'd finished to look at and read again, I almost cried. He takes an active role in helping pick some of his readers, which is great. It's a journey, but I believe with love we can help them succeed.

This is an amazing story! Thank you so much for sharing. May God continue to bless you and your stepson. May he continue to guide your steps with teaching him❤️❤️ This made my heart smile. You are truly a blessing from God to him. 🙏 I love the idea of having the closed caption on while watching tv. I am definitely going to do that. Thank you for sharing your beautiful story with us❤️

Thank you so much for the encouragement! It’s hard at times to not take blame. My son is almost 4, has learned a lot but still clarity is an issue. I’m planning to homeschool him and the speech delay is something that I’m worried will affect his learning ability. Fear on my part because he loves books and learns quickly. Thank you for the encouragement and reminder that every kid is different.

One thing I've noticed on YT is a decent number of parents worried about their children's speech delays. It got me thinking that if so many people are experiencing this maybe it's not all that uncommon or abnormal? You can also see testimonies of children that were delayed and eventually caught up and became chatterboxes. I think homeschooling is great environment for these little ones, so that they can get extra attention and practice with their parents. Thanks for sharing your experience.

Thank you for sharing this as well as your words of encouragement! Walking thru this similar situation with my little one now. Hasn't talked but can identify colors, shapes and items and can spell words out beyond his age. It helps to know of other situations where things have been similar. Thank you again for sharing!

Oh my gosh, I never have clicked on a video faster in my life. Thank you SO much Liz for sharing this part of your family's life and journey. SO much of what you're describing has sounded exactly like my son's situation. I know I've mentioned it lightly before. It's been a bit challenging for all of us, we've gone back and forth between maybe seeking Speech therapy/occupational therapy for him but I just don't want to open that can of worms if I don't have to. I guess I'm a little worried about how much our pediatrician would try to force upon us (we haven't seen her in over a year and she's unaware of his delays) and just how that will affect us. I already homeschool and always have planned to so, I am just unsure of how to approach this.....😅 I know I sound all over the place but this is truly something that has weighed heavy on me for the last year and a half. Please, keep us in your prayers. ❤❤❤❤

Oh Amber, I completely understand. I had the same feelings about everything. My suggestion would be to stay in prayer, communicate with your hubby, and let God lead your steps. There’s so much outside world pressures on everything, try to tune them out. I do really believe that in most cases moms know what’s best (with Gods guidance!) If it gets to a point where you feel led to take further steps, then pray and move forward. I’m not a professional at all, just one mama, talking to another mama. ❤️ My advice would be to just keep working with him as you have been. Patience is key (I know it’s hard at times.) Do sensory play, play with play, play games, play with toys while talking about them. You can even find cool kid friendly educational videos on KZbin to watch together. Any type of interaction is so good for him. I will pray that God guides your steps. 💙💚💙

@@simplyhomeschool18 Liz, you are such an encouragement and I really can't thank you enough for being SO consistent with your channel. I truly think God has placed you exactly where you're supposed to be. Sharing your son's story takes a lot of courage, online and in person, so THANK YOU!!! You are helping so many of us and I am truly so blessed by you. This doesn't even account for all of the detailed videos you've done sharing what each and every page of curriculum looks like in Abeka!! Girl. You are just so dedicated and I love it. I'm going to do exactly as you've suggested. I talk with my husband and God constantly about my son and I know over time we will look back and see we've come much further than we ever thought possible. 🙏 I'll be praying for your family as well. 🤗🫂 Thank you Liz!!! ❤

Hi Liz and sorry for this long post in advance. My son was just like that he wouldn’t talk at all I was so worried. I did take him to speech therapy for a couple of months but because of the pandemic we stopped . He began kindergarten in public school at that time I was only homeschooling my oldest daughter. I was afraid to teach him how to read since he wasn’t talking . But because of the pandemic and my daughters health issues we pulled him out after 4 months. Before he started kindergarten he would read signs but I thought it was a coincidence but as I started working with him at home I realized he was reading beyond his grade level . He’s in third grade now and an amazing reader we have conversation like adult his critical thinking skills and way of expressing him self is very advanced. All this to say that many people including my self thought he was behind and at times I even thought he might be autistic but in reality he was absorbing everything around him and when he was ready in his own time he blossomed . Thanks for sharing your experience because I felt alone during that time and this video can encourage other mothers in similar situations.oh and my son hates coloring as well.😂❤

Oh my goodness it is so good to hear of so many similar situations! Thank you for sharing, reading your comment felt so familiar in so many ways! The critical thinking made me smile! Our son is the same. He speaks like an adult at 11. He is so intelligent and also has such a caring side to him and always wanting to learn more and offer help to his friends ❤️

Thank you for sharing this too!! Hearing about your son adds even more encouragement about how my own could turn out in a couple years. My son HATES writing or drawing he WILL NOT hold any writing utensil unless I hold it with him and do all the guiding. He's 4.75 years old (😅) and LOVED drawing at 1.5-2.5 years old.. ...then once he turned 3 so much changed with him, including refusing to draw or write. So, I've been working on motor skill strengthening with him as much as I'm able. ❤

@@amberican927 Yes my son was the same so we did play dough , theraputty, hand strengthening fidget toys different scoops for rice bins , clothes pins etc . I wish I hadn’t worried so much and compared my son to my daughter and other children as time has passed I realize how wonderfully unique they are and they excel in different areas . One of the occupational therapists we saw for such a short time told me kids will not excel at the same rate in all of these areas speech, motor , emotion and cognitive at the same time.

@@darlenehernandez415 OH thank you so much Darlene. I'm going to look into some of those recommendations and try REALLY hard not to worry so hard. My daughter is 3 years older than my son with delays and she was/is extremely advanced in everything. She just always seemed to understand everything without trying or needing to explain each and every thing she learned in great detail. For the first 3 years of my son's life I just thought oh maybe it's just that he hasn't had the same social interaction because of the 2020 lockdowns or he's a boy so maybe that's why he's delayed. But, it's become increasingly apparent that something more might be going on and so I'm exploring every avenue to help him. I am so happy that your son is thriving and that all of your worrying was for nothing, that truly inspires me and fills me with hope. Thank you again for relating with me! ❤❤❤❤

This is super helpful. My son is 2.5 and still only babbling. We have him in early Intervention and once he turns 3, we'll see if we need private speech therapy. I'll start prek at home with him at that time too. I know he's asorbing a lot and understands everything even though he doesn't say intelligible words. He does everything else developmentally appropriate. I love that you're trusting God to lead you best with your child.

So ionic... We were going to name our oldest son Isaiah because my youngest brother name is Isaiah. Our son was the same like your son. Once we placed him around other children his age the blossomed. We wanted to homeschool from the beginning, but believed he would suffer more begin at home. He began Kindergarten two months before turning five and he talked with other children at school and he also read then too very fast. Also, he has took a state test for Math earlier this year and scored 99% percent tile. Now, our youngest little girl have never been to school. She only has been homeschooled and didn't want nothing to do with talking nor reading until five in the half. Now she is seven and you can't tell she had a speech delay. I mean she does studder, but the doctor say that's normal. 0Our daughter also took a state test in January and scored 99% tile 4th - 6th reading level. She in only in the first grade. It's not a boy or a girl thing. I believe every child develops at different times like you here saying. We can not compare some ones two year old talking to our two year old that doesn't talk. I told this to an old friend of mine years ago. She always thought her son was Autistic, but he is not. Even went as far as getting him tested. He just talked at five. We want our children to walk, talk, be potty trained, and/or read at a certain age because other people children doing so. It's good to have a smart fast learner. Right? There are children with extreme cases. All I can tell you is trust in the Lord with all thy heart, And lean not at your own understanding...I I believe that is part of Proverbs 3:5. That's all I can remember of the scripture. (LOL) Just know that God will make things happen in his own time. Let's just enjoy each stage our children are at right now because soon they will want to leave us and all we will have is memories. Thanks!😊

❤️❤️❤️ I agree 💯%. Thank you so much for sharing your story. It is truly an encouragement to me. I will continue to trust in the Lord ALWAYS!! He will see us through or over any obstacle in life. He has definitely lead me into posting this video. I was very hesitant, but I kept feeling the push. So I obeyed, and I am so grateful that I did because you all have truly encouraged me❣️ Thank you again for sharing your kiddos journey with us. 💙💚❤️
