Working Wood Grinder Fire - Engine 502 *Helmet Cam*

Engine 502 responding to a reported outbuilding fire. Updated information was given that it was a wood Grinder on fire at a mulch processing facility. The Engine arrived, laid out, and stretched a line to extinguish the fire. Engine 54-2 arrived and gave Engine 502 their water and their crew pulled an additional line. We can reach the far end of our first due in West Lampeter Twp within 5 minutes, and in Providence Twp about 7.

We run a similar chipper, and fire is a real hazard. We keep a 1000 gal water tank nearby, because it is needed from time to time. 😊

You have to keep this machine clean from wood dust, wood chips blowing back on the hot areas of the machine. Also a blown hydraulic line can cause a fire. If you run dull teeth it will run very hot and the wood can burn.

I believe their van is a traffic control unit. I may be a little biased but in my opinion, if its a full response or first due fire, the engine should always be the first out the door. The engine is what is going to put out the fire. As for their MVA response, same deal. The rescue is what is going to mitigate the hazards or extricate as needed, whereas the traffic control van should be secondary.

Yeah I would make sure that truck tires were flat or cold before getting close that mask wouldn't have helped much hot rubber at 100 psi
