Can you tell about a horse by its head?? Today we are visiting and having a conversation with George, an old friend and long-time horse man. He is showing us around his sugar shack and farm, and sharing lots of stories!
Watch our videos to learn about draft horses- horse logging, horse farming, and horse training! Jim uses Belgian, Percheron, and Suffolk horses to do work on the farm and in the woods. He teaches about harnesses, horse-drawn logging and farming equipment, horse feeding and maintenance, and voice commands for horses. New videos uploaded every week. Keep watching to see how Jim trains his new Suffolk Punch colts as he has trained his full-grown teams!

Jim and Brenda, Thank You so much for taking us viewers along on your visit to your friend Georges Farm in Vermont. I really enjoyed George's tutorial on making maple syrup. It was terrific !!! The consumer would have no idea on the ratio that takes an average of 43 U.S. Gallons of Sap to boil to produce 1 U.S. Gallon of Maple Syrup. Bill and Badger are a massive and wonderful team of Belgian Horses . George's theory on the parts of the horses head ring true . I remember my horse mentor Mike talking about the horse head theory . The single furrow plow looks in great condition.

What a wonderful, knowleagable friend that you have with George.>>>I love his young heart, as his sense of humour, and seeing the sugar shack, and evaporator, as well as the felt maple syrup filter bags, brought me so many fond memories, as my dad, my grandfather, my twin-brother and I, made our own maple syrup, maple butter, maple sugar, as maple toffee on snow, on our family farm in Mattawa, Ontario, Canada, east of North Bay, Ontario.>>>I truly enjoyed meeting George, and please pass-on my warmest regards to him, would You?

My dad always said a horse with a mealy nose really goes. When buying a horse he would take his hand and rub the horse between its ears and measure the distance between its ears. If the horse had a wide distance between his ears it meant he had the ability to learn. This might sound like an old tale but he had many more observations about a horse before he would purchase one. He had forgotten more about horse buying and training than anyone I ever knew.

If I had 2 horses to choose from and I looked at all of the head features.., right B4 I'd make my choice, I'd say "which one did Jim and George train?" They would point.. 'this one'..I'd say "ok, I'll take that one.". Ah ha, interesting , all those things and the information passed down through the generations, the energy horizontal in the colic out the tail is interesting, Martial art like.. So big! 1 ton plus each, a bigger horse requires more feed? A smaller horse moves better in the woods? We'll see what Jim says. Thank you George, Bill and Badger are awesome. A reflection of the Man that feeds him and cares for him. Lastly regarding the Maple Syrup, great to see , I will not get to the Badger state till May so missing the sap season. 1st week in April often the boil, one year I was home the last week of March and the trees froze, no dripping yet, so I missed the boil.. I learned from a Man now around 100 , George is mid 70's and so the tradition passed down again and again. In Alaska there is the Whaling tradition, in the northeast to Northern Midwest (Wisconsin) is the Maple Syrup Tradition. This is a rich part of us northerners our tradition. Thank you Jim George Brenda and the Horsies. 🐎. Love it, awesome to the core.

What a wonderful old character! Boundless energy and knowledge. George is a perfect example of how one can be, as a bachelor. He is clean living, organised, and free to pursue his passions. The horses are tremendous, and remind me of old Mick, in Jindabyne in the Snowy Mountains in Australia. Mick liked a horse with a big Roman nose, and if he spotted a pretty horse might comment "Got a bad dish in its face". George's horses look all business, superb. No wonder maple syrup seems expensive, a lot of making goes into it. Maple is not native to Australia, no-one here does this, I never seen it before. Jim, Brenda, thanks so much for this video. Looking forward to seeing you plough up Brenda's garden with the new plough, and all the new seeds started. Oops, plow!
