I love his re-evaluations of his own theories. It's good to know that genius exists in many places and at many times in history.

17:48 ff "Distinct species are not a fact of nature but of language; they are distinct, complex ideas with distinct names annexed to them. ... the differences proceed by continuous gradations. The boundaries of the species, whereby men sought them, are made by men. ... This point of view was not generally accepted until Darwin persuaded men to adopt the theory of evolution by gradual changes." [Bertrand Russell on Locke's Theory of Knowledge -1945] Just prior to this time someone else had other ideas: “From where do we get the right to believe, that from the very beginning Man was not what he is today? Looking at Nature tells us, that in the realm of plants and animals changes and developments happen. But nowhere inside a kind shows such a development as the breadth of the jump, as Man must supposedly have made, if he had developed from an ape-like state to what he is today.” [Hitler's Tabletalk Tischgesprache im Fuhrerhauptquartie] The two philosophies reflect the difference between monism and dualism; 1. Locke would have us see 'Man' as a subset of the single set 'Apes', 2. Hitler would have us see 'Man' as one set and 'Apes' as another. The former anticipated Darwin, the latter rejected Darwin yet both believed in a God. The only way for an individual to move from one philosophy to the other is by saying, in effect, "God is dead."

Raymond Candelaria Was Edith Bratt a nihilist when she left her Anglican God for Tolkien's Catholic God? Star crossed love (Juliet leaving her folk, Luthien losing her immortality) may be deemed nihilistic, but it's also the essence romance. Anyone with a heart can relate to that, but if you need a scriptural justification consider how the Bride of Christ is represented; torn between loves... www.thelandofshadow.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/09/jrrt-grave.jpg

Raymond Candelaria Nietzsche got the idea of the death of God from Christian philosophy; Hegel considered it a moving higher into the mystery of God, a transcendence. Been there without the drugs thanks, but if they help you..
