Speaking of eyes in anime as a Korean, it's more of a cultural thing where Korea, China, and Japan reads expressions from the eyes, where westerners read it from the mouth. That's why western cartoons really emphasizes the mouth features where as eastern visual arts focuses on the eyes when setting the mood or expressing emotions. You can also see this distinctions from letter emojis we Koreans used from the early 2000s to express emotions thru texts(^.^), (-.-;;), (ㅠ,ㅜ), (@.@), (눈-눈) while westerners letter emojis really focused on the mouth movements ( :) , :( , :/ , ;) , :0 ) of course this isn't a definitive thing where each culture focuses ONLY to those parts of their faces. thru several cultural exchanges in the late 2010s these preferences been somewhat moderated, I think. Been enjoying your reactions guys, FMAB being my favorite. Keep up the good work!

I don't think that's completely accurate, in western culture we have a saying that "the eyes are the window to the soul" - I'm pretty sure every culture across the world reads the entire face, and particularly the eyes, when it comes to understanding expressions. Older western cartoons like Looney Tunes had very exaggerated eyes, similar to what you see in something like Astroboy. I think if anything the difference between the way eyes are drawn in eastern vs western animation is just a focus on different artistic values. The west is where the renaissance happened so there's perhaps a cultural/artistic focus on more realistic proportions from that as the biggest part of our artistic culture. Artists today still study renaissance painters to learn their craft. It's an interesting discussion though, and definitely we seem to be taking artistic influences from each other now that it's easier to connect over the internet, which is definitely a good thing!

@@Metal-Spark I'm no expert on the artsy aspect on this to be honest. I was doing my thesis on cross-cultural psychology and the focus on different body/facial feature accordimg to the culture you were brought up definately exists, hence the text emojis. I just kinda connected the dots by myself and thought it related to the art world as well. But have to admit, the fact that the west went thru renaissance has more explanaining powers than/as well as the psychology behind the decisions made. Kudos sir

Gold hair and GOLD eyes; they’re a phenotype of the Xerxes people, and with all but Hohenheim and his sons dead (putting aside any who might have lived elsewhere) the Xerxians are now a rare breed. So the association that Xing makes is both literal and metaphorical…

"If this is what showing mercy costs me, then I have to learn to pay the price". GOD DAMN this line alone makes the show next level compare to majority of the other anime. Like major Miles said, by being determined not to kill, Ed and Al have chosen a harder path. Their determination is hard fought, not some "good guy protagonist" BS.

About the huge anime eyes, it's often said that this trend started with Osamu Tezuka, one of the most influential creators in the early stages of modern manga. And it's said that Tezuka, in turn, was inspired by early Disney animations to draw that sort of eyes.

Fun fact the author had just recently given birth before writing the scene where Ed pulls the pipe out of his gut. It had been a hard labor and she wanted to make a scene the conveyed the pain she felt during childbirth

And now we know: The real reason Bradley named Ed 'The Fullmetal Alchemist' was so if Ed died, Al could be the next one.

But wouldn't Ed's death lead to Alphonse soul being stuck in the void of the Truth?!
@christopherk2185
@christopherk2185 2 жыл бұрын
@@DarthKay093 It's unclear. Alphonsone's soul started slipping before Ed got hurt, but when Ed passed out Al dropped immediately. I think that Ed is at least partially keeping Al here. In any case, Bradley probably didn't know that.

Hohenheim didn't create alkahestry. It was said in the episode 18 that alhakestry was created by _combining_ the teachings of the "Sage of the West" (i.e. Hohenheim) with some elements of the Xingese culture. _(Hohenheim is the "Sage of the West". The "Sage of the East", on the other hand, is obviously the person who we now know as "The Father", since he seems to be the one who founded Amestris.)_
