Company I worked for believed in F550's. Had a fleet of 15 with 20 foot landscaping bodies on them. They were hauling skid steers and pallets of sod. The trailers they were using were falling apart after about 18 months. Boss decided to upgrade all trailers to 12 ton Hudson trailers. We had a big company meeting. He told everyone to take care of the new equipment. We had 4 tandem dump trucks, 4 quad axle dump trucks, 1 seven axle lowboy and 1 beaver tail lowboy. I was over the dump trucks and drove one as well. I took care of all the DOT compliance paperwork. We worked in North Carolina. I asked one simple question. Who is going to teach all the guys how to pass the CDL test at the DMV? He responded we don't need a CDL to drive a F550. I pulled out me manual and showed him the requirements. He got pissed off really bad and told me to stop telling him how to run his company! If you know Hudson Brothers trailers. They have the capacity in a large decal on both sides of the tongue. It took NC DOT officers 7 days to pull over the first truck. 3 days later the entire fleet had been stopped. The fines were in the hundreds of thousands of dollars. I left the following week. The company lasted another 18 months. Karma has everyone's address.

You are very wise going with the F550 for what you do. I see so many guys on KZbin and on forums towing well over 30,000 lbs with their 1 tons and it's down right ridiculous. I know that Ford & Dodge say that their new 1 tons can tow 30+ thousand pounds, but realistically I think a commercial 4500/5500 truck is crucial in pulling weight like that day in and day out. 1 tons are for farmers and occasional trailer towers ie. horse owners, boat owners, 5th wheel or holiday trailer owners, race car owners etc. 450/550 trucks are for guys who pull skid steers, excavators, backhoes, 3-5 cars daily all the time. The axles, and dumbed down engine hp is designed for that sort of abuse, 1 tons can't do it forever compared to the bigger trucks. So kudos to you for going with the 550. I run a small hotshot business in Alberta Canada, and I run a srw 1 ton Ford, but I only tow single vehicles, or small machinery with my business. I don't do oilfield or heavy equipment with my business as of yet, but if/when I do, I will most certainly be buying a 450/550 truck to do it with. The heaviest I have towed with my srw 1 ton was 14,500 lbs and that was by far the heaviest ever, 9/10 of my jobs are from 3,000-10,000 lbs and it is very uncommon that one is over 10,000 lbs trailer+load. But if/when my company grows I will be forced to buy a larger heavier truck for my bigger jobs.

Couple things - you have to make sure your front + rear axle weights together are under your GVWR of 19,500. If you look at the label, the maximum F + R axle weights add up to more than 19,500. So if your rear axle is maxed out, then you can't also max out your front without going overweight. Also, if the trailer is rated for a load of 21,160 and you have 21K on there, you can't add another 6K. When you calculated your trailer weight you just looked at your rear axles but you forgot to add the tongue weight. Axle weight + tongue weight has to be under 30,000.

Canada is a funny duck.. if registered as commercial it's "similar" yet not. My truck for example is not registered as commercial, the other day I had to haul gravel for personal use, the trailer I was using was a 12' dump it's supposed to hold 4.4cu yard... we asked for 2 yards... go up to the scale total weight truck/trailer/gravel was pushing 22,000lbs I had over 12,000lbs in gravel... "Legally" I could have left the yard and drove home with it. Needless to say they loaded over 4 yards, we went back and dumped half, didn't need that much. I've been about 16,000lbs behind my 1500 ram twice, not anything law enforcement could say.. now before you call me an idiot, I was taking back roads out in the country I knew very well, very very low traffic, like I saw 2 or 3 vehicles on a 50km trip and it was lower speed (60-80km/h), on a trailer with properly setup trailer brakes.

@gold5th5 жыл бұрын
@killer2600 that's the "funny duck" part.. here in Alberta the weight laws only apply to vehicles registered as commercial. So I could be rolling down the highway over weight, get pulled into a weigh scale(not quite sure how they'd do it since I don't have to comply with the flashing lights) all they could do is give me a tongue lashing about how bad being over weight is. It's kinda sad here actually that somebody who dailies a smart car can hop into a 37+ft motor coach or an F350/450 and put a 37+ft fifth wheel behind it, and then a boat or another trailer behind that and be 100% legal. Here you can drive anything with 2 axles on the vehicle(other than motorcycle), not counting trailer with the regular "car/light truck (class 5)" license. So technically.. for personal use somebody could hop in a single axle semi (without air brakes) toss a 40ft trailer(once again without air brakes) and go have fun.. legally on a regular class 5.I'm not saying it's a good system, it's the way it is here. Personally I like towing, it's fun and it can be a mental challenge, it's great fun pulling through a drive through with a turn in it with a loaded trailer and watching the staff at the store freak out.To the actual question, they'd have to prove the over weigh driver was negligent, like didn't maintain or setup the brakes properly, didn't secure the load properly, etc or they legitimately broke a traffic law for example ran a stop sign and hit somebody.. I don't know if it would matter big picture if it were driver error or overloaded.. from a legal "you're at fault" stand point. If the overloaded person were traveling properly and somebody else ran a stop and got t-boned, I don't know if weight would ever come up.

Outlaw cowboy trash like that is why we've got ELDs and insane licensing rules now! As for the cost to set up a rig like the one in this video, and listening to the numbers on here (and some quick metric to SAE conversions), I realized one thing...my old 1972 C65 was a STEAL at only $4,000...even with the $8,000 I put into it! Front 9k axle, rear 20k axle, GVWR 28,990, GCWR 48,500...427 gas burner (though that year DID have a 4-71 Detroit option) and looks stylish, too! Sometimes, you just have to realize the work you're doing requires a Class 5 vehicle to legally do the job right! Thumbs up!

this is a nice video on picking the right equipment for heavy hauling. HOWEVER - i don't know where this guy lives but unless he has a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) he's NOT going to drive that rig on any highway in Pennsylvania!! in Pennsylvania (and i believe West Virginia and Ohio) the total "combined" weight (truck, trailer and trailer load) cannot exceed 26,000 lbs for a regular driver's license. so depending upon the State in the United States a person has their driver's license issued from - that State will determine how much weight a person with a regular (non-CDL) license can legally tow. this is an entirely separate issue from whether you have picked equipment capable of hauling the weight you're wanting to haul.

Make sure that you have a CDL make sure you have Dot numbers make sure that your truck is plated and registered for the weight of the trailer and the truck combined 12000 pound plates are not good enough make sure you have triangles make sure you have snow chains in the winter time make sure you have tie down straps make sure you have all your ducks in a row because they are going to get you on something there's a whole bunch of other things on here I didn't list but you're going to need them make sure your tires are rated correctly make sure your axles are rated correctly make sure your brakes are working properly make sure your emergency brake will hold back the truck make sure your trailer brakes will hold back the truck and there's a whole list of things and don't even get me started on that bull crap edl shit they have now

I've gone through a chicken coop over 80,000 pounds with my lift axle up. The DOT officer didn't care that I was over 80,000. I still had 6 axles on the ground. He cared that I was about 38,000 on my drives. I dropped the lift on the trailer and then, I was about 32 on the drives. I talked my way out of even getting a warning let alone a ticket. Clean level 2 inspection. Just because he was let go, doesn't mean he was legal. Just means the officer didn't care. I had a load of lumber out of Canada during the winter 2012/13. I did the math at 2.21 pounds per kilo at the mill. This way I errored in my favor and wouldn't be over 80. I was within a few hundred pounds, 79+. I got into Montana and ended up going through a coop out in the middle of nowhere. Officer said I was 500 pounds over on my trailer. I explained everything including my math and kg on each axle set. He let me go. No warnings, no tickets. On my way out, he suggested I spread the axles out (sliding rear trailer axle). I told him I can't. That would put me about 2K over on my drives then. Went through 3 more chicken coops that trip. Not one said anything about my weight, even when I got an inspection at one.

Then when you have to fuel up in Canada where the pumps (like 90% of the world) read in litres. So you ask a local how many litres in a gallon and they give you the answer in the Imperial gallons they grew up with which are 5/4 (or is it 6/5) of your piddly little gallon. Now I'm confused too but my gallon of water weighed 8 lb (fortunately we used to use the same pounds) so likely 4 litres is 6/5 of an old Canadian gallon.

So in a fleet application cowboy drivers could just drive the trucks wide open acceleration loaded heavy and the setup would live. Likewise with the tranny sixth was locked out to put less stress on the clutches. The truck was a hoss, I loved towing with it. I admit loading it well over what I was registered to haul. Pulled a 40' gooseneck with 20-21 2200-2300lb wet wrapped rolls of hay and would put another on the bed between the neck of trailer and cab.
