Very good presentation JD. The only problem i see is both you and TFL drive it on a closed coarse. .Everything is on a controlled environment ,nobody cutting in front of you or swerving in your lane.I know you have a CDL and can drive it legally but really don't have that much experience .You should take one of those trucks and take it down 95 south from CT to Richmond VA real world driving and see how a light truck and a heavy load really drives/handles .Would be a interesting experience.Also put container on it, all the big three manufactures are guilty of doing the same thing, they they load heavy but their not pushing any air, quite a different experience. Heck that trailer you were pulling, the load wasn't even as high as the gooseneck.

Ultimately the truck “can haul” 40,000 lbs, but if you plan on doing that every day a single axle tractor or bigger is ideal. I would be curious to see longevity of the high output in a long term heavy towing application. I currently have an F450 and a Chevy 3500 for reference towing heavy daily.

I can’t see this truck towing heavy everyday without lots of problems. Sure, some will have success but that would not be the experience of 80% of those that did so. This truck won’t be sold in a significant amount of numbers in the single cab, xl trim so this demo does nothing but show what a super crew king ranch won’t be able to. According to edmunds, the 2022 regular cab dually tow capacity was 21,200 pounds. This is near double that weight. I’m sure they’ve “beefed up wear components”, but at the end of the day it’s still a 6.7L power stroke tuned much higher than original design parameters. It’s been a great engine for a long time, very successful, but it’s put into so many different applications and in my opinion, just asked to do too much. Other manufacturers have done the same, rams venerable 6cyl Cummins and GMs 6.6 duramax, but in some configurations and applications they’re simply not up to the task. Try using a f650 dump truck to tow equipment and you’ll see what I mean. They’re simply asking it to be the jack of all trades and it’s not, but they put it in everything. It’s expensive and time consuming to develop new engines, especially diesel, so this is the cheap and easy answer. I think they’re betting that the vast majority of buyers will only need to tow a 5th wheel camper and the biggest ones are around 24k pounds, so I suspect this is a sales “gimmick” (my truck has the HO, what’d you get?) as these truck will be burned up in commercial application daily use. As you stated, a single axle tractor is a much better option.

Yeah much over 30k and it's just too much to do on a daily basis. I pull 30k on a regular basis and it's really too much. Especially if you have electric brakes. The truck is plenty capable of pulling it but compared to a semi it's just not super comfortable. Doesn't feel near as safe as you do in a semi, even pulling double the weight.

Back in 2010 took some drilling directional equipment from Tilden to Lafayette LA. Orange Tx CAT had me at 38,000+ and my buddy at 42,000 gross. But that was with a 3500 Cummins. Towed well. That’s 4500 Ford is a nice truck. If it had a Cummins I’d buy one.

That's the truck i want (maybe a 4x4 version, but not necessarily) and the truck I've been waiting for you to review. But correct me if I'm wrong. "Tow rating" isn't necessarily how much weight the truck can Tow, but actually how much it can safely stop. Because I'd be willing to bet you could put that 40K trailer behind an F-350 crew cab, 4x4 Platinum Edition with every bell and whistle on it, and it would still pull it just fine. It just wouldn't stop as well. Like i said, i may be wrong, but i swear I've heard that somewhere before.

it is all done via the SAE towing test to calculate the max weights of these trucks. google search will pull it right up for you and explain how the test comes to the final weights

What is the actual GCWR, for that truck? Even though it pulled the load, 48,0000 pounds seems too heavy for the f450 to haul day to day. The specs I have seen for the f450 max GCWR of 40,000. Hey great video. We know it can haul!

I see a problem. The reason semis have double axles is to spread the load because of the road/bridges load limit given by the DOT. It's 20 000lb per single axle. I haven't seen the CAT scale ticket but if the rear axle is over 20k there's trouble...

The rear axle weight wouldn't be anywhere near that. Likely closer to 4000lbs over the rear axle. Plus the truck weight, you probably around 8k lbs.

a class 8 loaded trailer at ~60000lb (+40000lb load)... whole other class indeed. BUT - a trailer like this carrying ? 12-14 tonnes (30000lb max real payload) is a bit insane (F450 up to 8600lb unladen and trailer ?? 2-4000b..) A tiny engine - just 6.7L - is working really hard at those weights (spinning tyres is just high inertia, low gear torque speaking.

I'm sure that doesn't happen often except for rvs. However the state I live in I could drive this truck and a 40k trailer without a day's of experience.

The real test would be to keep that trailer on it, hire people to drive it a solid 12 to 14 hours a day everyday and let's see when that chinsy engine blows. If they are going to go that direction I'd rather see a truck built around a 9 liter John Deere engine for true longevity, a bit stronger of a frame and a bit less towing capacity for the trade off in weight all in the package of a full size truck. Now we are talking!!!!

So this truck has barely 15 percent tongue weight capacity at 40,000 lbs, 40,000 lbs x 0.15 is 6000 lbs of tongue weight yet it recommended that you should have 20 percent or more of tongue weight which would be 8,000 lbs. which this truck can’t handle safely nor any other 1 ton trucks out there.

Exactly. This might be good for a farming operation in Illinois or Iowa that needs to tow a heavy implement down the road to another farm they own. I’d never take this into the mountains. It isn’t that hard to learn how to drive a Class-8 truck. They only cost a little more and you would need your CDL anyway to haul this load in the F-450.

As practical as your comment may be, there's a serious negative impact to truck manufacturers when they don't innovate and constantly improve technology and capabilities. The fact is, RAM truck sales have been abysmally slow and dangerously close to causing major financial distress to the company because they have not innovated to keep up with GM and Ford. It's easy to say that this is all for show, which it likely is, but that doesn't make up for the fact that people tend to not buy trucks that don't innovate constantly. It's really more our fault as a buyer than the truck manufacturers.

Ehh at least about they keyless start thing there is a theft concern. There has been a rise with thieves using amplifiers between the car and the house, essentially amplifying the signal from the fob to unlock and start the car. Additionally AI aided tools have been getting better at decoding the "keys" keyless fobs use to start cars. While these are mostly concerns for more expensive vehicles they are becoming more commonplace as the tech develops. Considering the price of these trucks it's understandable that people want to stick with a physical key+immobilizer that literally won't start unless the person has the physical key.
