Trucks certainly have grown in size and weight. My first F 250 was a 1959 and had a GVW max of 7500 lbs. My 1986 F 350 had a GVW max of 8400 lbs. To get over 10,000 lbs GVW you needed duals in the rear. I'm now retired and drive a Ranger.

Shopped 250 vs 350 earlier this year. Price differential was literally $1,000. I bought the 250, contemplating only need to tow my existing boat, utility trailer (SXS and wheelers) and/or travel trailer. No big deal. Immediately started looking at fifth wheel toy hauler and realized that hitch weight was over payload. In hindsight, wish I'd gotten the 350 just to give myself more options.

Here’s my thinking... If you’re pulling a travel trailer, then you’ll probably be OK with a diesel F250. If you’re pulling a fifth wheel camper up to 12,000 lbs. you’re probably OK with a gasser F250 unless you pull in the mountains or you want a lot of bling in the truck. If you’re towing a fifth wheel camper over 12,000 lbs. you need a diesel engine and to have enough payload you have to have at least a F350.

Great video and explanation of payloads and GVWRs. Well done. Trucks have gotten very heavy in the last decade or so - especially diesels. Not only is the engine heavy but all of the emissions "junk" adds weight too. Fords new 7.3 V8 Gasser will be worth a look I think!
@potatopie16962 жыл бұрын
The 7.3 gas is definitely worth a look if you don't need the torque for towing the diesel gives on a regular basis, or if you live in a climate that regularly goes below freezing, where diesel tends to gel up.

My Ram will be WAY over it's payload, which is about 1950 lbs. The Grand D 5th wheel gooseneck is a 2900 lbs. I was shocked, and now upset, since I will miss my PAID OFF truck and esp the Cummins! Looks like the F350 is the choice now, but I will go with the 7.3 gasser XLT since payload is showing about 3700 - 4k lbs based off of Fords workbook. These new Trucks are more than I paid for my first house, lol.

workplaytv yeah. I’m really surprised by how little the 250 can tow. I definitely thought it was closer to 16k. But generally the ones I’ve been seeing are only rated for 12k. I’m planning on starting a dumpster rental service using dump trailers. And for a 15k trailer I’d need the 350 to stay legal. I’ve been looking at crew cab long beds. Not sure how much of a difference the crew cab short bed would make. God forbid you get into an accident when you’re over weight. Your insurance company will say you were legal. We can’t cover you in this accident. They often hide that in the fine print.
@lordrichard81845 жыл бұрын
I almost feel like they’d be better off getting rid of the 250 and the 350 dually. And have a 350 srw. The 150s have really increased in capability to now yow over 10k. Almost 11k. And the 250 can pull 12k. So it’s not a huge jump there. And getting rid of the 350 dually would force people to buy a 450 which is a better truck for towing heavy. Mainly because of the wide track front axle. So you can turn tighter in a 450 then a 350 dually.
@workplaytv5 жыл бұрын
Billy bob Smith Hey yeah there still is a big difference in payload between the 250 and 150 if you get more of a base trim and if you get the gasser in the 250 you gain a lot due to the engine being lighter than the driest. For the 350 drw being gone they would then need to make more gear ratios available in the 450 like 3.73, 4.10. I don’t think that truck is going anywhere though. They sell a lot more 350s than 450s.

Very informational video. I see it’s a year old video but still relevant. Thx. I just test drove a 2020 4 x 4 crew cab F2 50 with 6.7 Diesel and the same set up F 350. They both have the same number springs to include the helper spring. Because the F2 50 had the towing package with the new for 2020 pro back up assist trailer the round knob to steer the trailer without the steering well the F3 50 had The pro assist but not the trailer package. Lariet package on both. Both also had the 3 inch receiver under the bumper for a 3 inch hitch. I believe the GVWR on the 350 said 11,500 lbs and the 250 said 10,800 lbs. Other 250 diesel on the lot had 10,000 GVWR. Both of these are new and I test drove the 350 First and this is my actual first time driving a diesel and my first thought was it drove kind of clunky for the test drive and at that point I was thinking of keeping my F150 and finding a lighter travel trailer. Not sure why the 350 felt clunky but it was a recent dealer trade for another Ford SUV the salesman said and had 480 miles which 240 of it was from driving it from Ohio to the dealer for the trade. So that seemed weird. I told the salesman if I was spending 70 K range I only something that was brand new with close to 0 miles so who knows what happened with the unknown mileage at hand. Generally people and/or a dealer could trade in their problem for something else so that could’ve been the case maybe it had something going on with it that they’re not gonna say otherwise they would not get the trade they wanted. I’ve then drove the F2 50 and it actually felt like it drove equal to or slightly better than my F150. I knew at that point the F2 50 the only way to go. It was more than enough towing capacity for anything I would venture into. I ended up purchasing the F2 50 for a future travel trailer use but I wanted to be comfortable while driving plus The towing set up on it was just slightly lower than 350 but also much higher than the standard F250.

Mike Parlin Huge difference is a 1/2 ton to 3/4 ton. Yeah the payload May be close to the and in this case cause of the diesel weighs a lot. If you get a gas engine your payload will be much more in 250 vs 150. 250 is around 2000ls heavier due to larger stronger frame, larger axles, larger tires, larger brakes. The list goes on and on. Hauling a camper with your family if you want a safe, stable truck that won’t sway all over the road and stop when you need to don’t give the 150 a look. Go straight to a 250 or 350. Honestly no comparison when you haul the same weight in a 150 vs 250.

The top (helper) spring on the 350 won't do anything until it starts hitting the brackets. Anything below that weight and you won't see any/much difference between the 2. Ford has so many spring types (like camper package, plow package etc) that it's hard to compare 2 trucks unless identical packaged.
@acdii2 жыл бұрын
Thats the overload spring. I just replaced springs on my 2012 F350, the bottom stiff spring and two leaves like the F250 above and the Overload. I think Ford does it for ride quality, but over time the springs sag. I replaced them with 6 leaf 4400# each rated springs, truck rides the same too, but can carry more weight easier than with stock. Now I put 2000 pounds in the bed and the truck is level. It would be on the overload with the overload half way down on the old springs and the nose pointing the way for comets.
@azr2d12 жыл бұрын
@@acdii again, there are many spring combinations that come from factory. If you have options like a camper package or snow plow package you have different stock springs. If you have an long bed crewcab you have different springs. Sure, they can sag over time if they're used . But changing them isn't that hard. And higher rates does affect ride quality. OTherwise ford would slap much higher springs on there and call it good. IT doesn't work that way. This is why they use the overload spring. IT only comes into play when the truck is loaded up and won't affect ride if it's not loaded up.
@acdii2 жыл бұрын
@@azr2d1 Yeah. and? What does that have to do with what I did with my truck?I took what was on there, replaced it with something else, and noticed no difference in ride quality but big difference in load stance. For that matter, the packs I replaced were 2200 pound rated packs plus overload, the overloads were what gave the suspension the 7000 pound ratings of the GAW. I replaced them with non overload 4400 pound packs. Noticed no different in ride quality. My experience, others YMMV.

The only thing sucks about getting the 1 ton is, as you briefly mentioned in your video, is that you pay more for tax and registration. However, in my opinion, if I were to get a 1 ton truck (350 or 3500), I would go all the way and get the 2-wheel drive dually (only around $1400 USD option). Dually is not good on snow or sand, so save some money by opting for the 2-wheel drive. Great video.

This video shows exactly why I got a Ram 3500 (SRW). Nowadays, everybody's so called "3/4-ton" trucks are really just detuned 1-ton trucks; usually a slightly less strong axle & springs so as to lower the GVWR. In the case of General Motors, the GMT-800 generation trucks were pretty much the last generation that had a 3/4-ton chassis; by that, I mean the frame rail's steel was a thicker gauge than a 1/2-ton frame, but not as thick as a 1-ton frame & therefore would not be too heavy of a truck; the 3/4-tons also only had a semi-floating Dana 44 rear axle & the 2500-HD & 3500's had the full-floating Dana 60 rear axle. Notice with newer GM trucks since 2008 (the beginning of the GMT-900 generation), does not have "2500" anymore, but rather, 2500-HD. That is because 2500-HD still means today what it meant when GM first came out with the moniker at the beginning of the GMT-800 generation. That is, the 2500-HD was a detuned 1-ton; people back in the GMT-800 generation would say that the 2500-HD was a single rear wheel 1-ton & that is not true! It's a 1-ton frame & 1-ton axles, BUT, slightly detuned at the springs. I remember in the early 2000's when you built a Silverado/ Sierra on the website, there was no option for it on the website to make an SRW 3500, BUT, you could still order a single rear wheel 3500 from the dealer. The only other reason the 2500-HD was more common was because one always gets a better deal when buying off the lot; if you wanted a diesel engine, AND, you only wanted single rear wheels, the lots more commonly had in stock the 2500-HD.

Its been a while, and I don't like doing math in public, but here we go. Assuming the air bags have a diameter of 5" (19.63 sq inch) with only 5psi that would be applying about 98.15 lbs of lift per bag. So the F250 springs are feeling 196.3 lbs less weight than the F350 springs; thus less sag.

350 should have bigger brakes to stop the increased loads it can carry...
@AVASdesertRACER3 жыл бұрын
Nope. The brakes on the 350 are engineered to stop the 11,500 GVWR. They put the same brakes on the 250. You just looked at it the opposite way. The 250 brakes are technically overkill for the GVWR of 10,000.

Another thing to consider in comparing the 250 vs. 350 is your gvw in regards to your gcwr. In many states you need a class “A” drivers license over a certain weight, and they go by the trucks rated weight, in many instances using the 350, it will put you over the limits of a standard drivers license, just something to consider, great vid.
@workplaytv4 жыл бұрын
Joe Gerlach Yup your are absolutely correct. The way it works here is it goes by what you register the truck for. So let’s say the GVWR is 11,500 you can actually register it for 10,000, 11,000 etc to avoid that.

@crazyhass843 жыл бұрын
Well u can get a 250 with the overload springs which is gvwr of 10800 vs 10k. 1800 + 800 is 2600 payload for payload. I just drove a 2020 f250. Door sticker said max was 2900 lbs payload. So i am considering trading my ram 3500 that rides like a tank on a 250.

Great video and explanation for those that don’t know . I just went through this decision. I didn’t need a 350, but with the price being so similar .. I wanted make sure I wasn’t going to regret Going with less truck if I went for the 250 . I wanted the 250 because of the slightly better ride quality and it seemed it would still be all the truck I ever needed . Also .. after going over the specs with a fine tooth comb on the Ford website .. it said that the F250 overall height is slightly more then the F350 . I can’t remember the number now as it was in millimeters (I’m in Canada) but I think it was maybe 1/3 to a 1/2 inch or so higher . I don’t know why ? But that’s what the specs say . Maybe just more arc in the springs because of the lower rating . That could be what was throwing off your squat measurements . One factor you don’t mention, and is a huge factor in payload is engine choice . The diesel adds about 1000 pounds of overall weight that you lose on your payload . I ended up going with a F250 Lariat with the ultimate package, but with the 6.2 gas V8 . My payload is 2835 pounds on the door sticker . So it’s basically a 1 ton capacity truck without the diesel . Still only has the 9900kg gvw . But it’s a nice happy medium with a little nicer ride then a 350 .. but still with with a max bumper pull tow rating of 15000 pounds if you select the 4:30 gears. I recently hauled a 4000 pound 14 ft dump trailer loaded with 10500 pounds of gravel . That put me just under my max tow rating and almost at my 9900 kg gvw . It was 9500 kg total on the scale ... and the truck did great . Hardly squatted the suspension. Power was surprisingly good for a gasser . It got up to speed from a stop reasonably well and it held 100km/hr up a 5% grade in 4th gear without a screaming engine . Something to consider for those looking at super duties . If I was getting a diesel .. yes definitely get the 350 . The engine weight eats up too much payload . But if your looking at the gasser, the 250 is a nice option and still offers a pretty decent payload . With a 2800 pound payload you can fill the cab with passengers and gear .. and still have 2000 pounds of capacity in the box or a combination trailer tongue weight . Just thought I’d add this info for those looking . I agonized over the details of this decision . Your video explains a lot . But thought I’d chime in with the gasser option . One more thing .. I think if you add the camper package to the 250 it adds an extra leaf and bumps the gvw even more if you need it . But it’s still a 3/4 ton . Go figure .
@gordboyko7695 жыл бұрын
mtrujillo1973 I do have the 4:30 rear end . I factory ordered the truck, and pondered the rear end gearing a fair bit before ordering . I believe you are correct in the diesel 250’s . But with the gas engine there is a 3:31 .. 3:55.. 3:73 and finally 4:30 for the max tow rating on the gas powered trucks of 15000 pounds . In a gas F250 the only way you can get a tow rating that high is with the 4:30 rear end . I think it’s 12500 pounds with the other rear end options .

Good spot on vid. I've had super duty f250 and f350 srw trucks. Both 4x4 both front leaf spring era trucks. I was surprised how much stiffer the 1 ton was over my old 250. Both trucks had pro comp 6.5" lifts. The 250 rode better lifted than it did with stock springs. The 350 I bought lifted. I use both trucks as work trucks the 350 for sure handles loads better. The 350 springs do not flex near as good as the 250 does while driving across uneven land, or rough roads. Unloaded and empty my 350 rides like a log wagon, the 250 didnt. I'm usually always carrying a couple hundred pounds of tools around all the time in the bed, just something I've noticed when I do clean my truck out now and then lol.

Great video bud. I have a 2017 F250 Lariat almost all options. My GVWR is 10K lbs and my payload is 2263 lbs. I load my Polaris rzr xp 4 turbo in my toy hauler and my tongue weight goes from 1400 lbs to around 1250 lbs. I can't back it in so it what it is. I don't get any sway even at around 11% tongue weight. My loaded trailer, wife and kids, and my quad in the bed puts me at around 2100 lbs loaded payload. I have Airlift bags to stop the porpoising after my leveling kit. This is the max I would go. If we upgrade our RV, I would have to get a 350 single wheel minimum. I agree with 3/4 vs 1 ton registration and ride quality. That's why most go with a 250 but find they exceed their payload. My 250 is a daily driver 70+ miles unloaded. Ride quality was key for me.

Jason Kubitz Hey man you are the perfect example of what I was saying. Is your the gas or Powerstroke? Sounds like we have close to the same truck but you have 350lbs more payload.

@@workplaytv I have the powerstroke. I wanted all the options like the Platinum but I noticed the payload took a major hit. The only thing I don't have in the Lariat trim is the power running boards and extra cameras. Oh, and the cool headlights. I have the moonroof, leather etc. There are so many options and my particular truck suited my needs for now lol. I may just keep my setup and get a motor home when my boys get older. Or, not load my quad my wife desperately needs every trip that she barely rides lol. I don't have much wiggle room for weight. I don't know the difference in registration between the two but I pay around $1000 US dollars annually right now in California. The 2020 powerstrokes are looking tempting though with that 10 speed.
@jasonkubitz94105 жыл бұрын
@mtrujillo1973 It's because the platinum has more options that add to the total weight. A guy at work has an XLT and has a payload of 2700 or so. I wish I could afford the platinum though. Navy vet Trucks have grown in size and power but the problem is they have not improved much in gas. Now my question is what is the difference on fuel, while towing on an empty bed vs towing at the max capacity and city vs highway? I live in Veags, moved from Cali, so I have to know as a navy vet, which is better? I think the F450's are cool but they are very poor on gas so that is out I hear less than 11 MPG. I appreciate it i will be not towing over 80% of the time but 10-20% of the time, i will need to. Looking to get a good used lariat 2-3 years old max.

As for GM 2500hd and 3500hd the differences are more on my 3500hd 2015. The axle, brakes, frame and suspension are not the same and are not interchangeable between the 2 classifications according to auto parts suppliers. Plus, the classification of the 3500hd is "commercial" and the 2500hd is not according to auto insurance companies. This can relate to cheaper insurance premiums for the 3500hd.

The 350 squat will drop a little more until you exceed that first spring. So with a lighter trailer it will squat more. But once you exceed the first spring it will squat less than the 250. That is why it rides as smoothly as it does. That being said, load each one with say 1800 lbs payload, or tongue weight. Then you see the less squat. Great video. Thanks for the comparison

Once you add thd diesel in 3/4 ton trucks your really need 1 ton to be able to pull there max weights n not be over loaded. As far as squat difference. Depending on your state/Province one major consideration people should be aware of is that 10k and above GVWR trucks you could be required to get an annual commercial vehicle safety. In my home province (Manitoba) this is what I have to do with my F-350 and it can be a bit of a hassle, as such I see alot of people who want a HD pickup but not the hassle of being classed a "Heavy Truck" just going with 3/4 ton's. That being said the GVWR is what it is and if you want to haul heavy loads legally best to stick with a 1 ton because like you said 1,800lbs payload gets used up fast!
