I love your work so much Mike, I am your super fan. Super didactic. The only comment I have is at minute 23:52, you say "...super save..." Question: Is it possible that the first save is for safety, then sync, and the second save is for you to get any sync work from others, they may have done? Thank you.

Hello, Loved the video. I have one question. Is there a way to show the sample value instead of the ? in box? For example in a list of consultant you want to add their information but under what question mark do you add what. So thats why I want to show the sample value so that if someone else is filling in the information they know what to type in.?
@miketaylor8211
@miketaylor8211 Жыл бұрын
Well.. sorry to say... the sample value is suppressed and the tag is shown BLANK. when you highlight it... a question mark will appear so you can add information.

Great Video. but I am bothered about the "getting back to work" 29:54.... Why will you need to "create new local file from central file and overwrite the local file"??? is this means you cannot use the local file "mikesgreatbldg with your name" and just save & synchronize it again. thanksss

The way to use Worksharing the best is to assign different people different tasks… not the same. Example: one fixes windows and doors, another person works on schedules or ceilings. If they try to edit the SAME element.. they will get error or ‘sync request’.

hi, glad to learna lotof detail from your video, So, im having issues about worksharing on Revit (mine is v2020,2021), few days ago ive made a central file (with v2020) on a local network (LAN) within central file was at my local drive setup as shared folder and mapped it as \\PC\Central\file.rvt, and everything was fine, everyone work as local file, synch etc.. but unfortunately, yesterday i tried the same way to create a cental file using v2021, again i made cental within my local drive folder and mapped it as shared (read/write to everyone) but others just cant open it as a local file, the "create new local file" check box was greyed ouy, revit said it was moved or copied to another loc... what does it mean?? i really appreciate if u could help this out, many thanks
@miketaylor8211

Try opening the new 2021 Central File and make sure you do a SaveAs (and make Central in the Options). Save the file right back on TOP of itself... overrite it. And then it should work. It is not working because it is not a Central file yet. it is still a Local file.

Great content once again! Just to further question backup copies, you stated not to sync multiple times a day as a single user. Now what happens if I am working in a team of x and each member sinks at days end, would we not have over ridden the central sync x amount of times? Or does each individual members sync stay within a special member only section of the project save directory. A personal sync history if you will. Cheers, Christian
@miketaylor8211
@miketaylor8211 2 жыл бұрын
The Central file has a ‘History’ built into it. The problem with syncing too much comes when it’s a normal file and not a Central yet. But now that you have me thinking, I’m going to go check on that!!! I’m going to test saving a ton of times and then try to ‘recover’ a file from last week! I’ll let you know.

Awesome stuff. I am yet to do any Worksharing, but this will be a great help in the future. Thank you. Sorry, I added a comment earlier today with a link and it looks like it got removed due to that link (the link was to a pdf of a couple of sheets showing graphical door and window schedules I recently did for an assignment). Do you have any tips and tricks for creating window and door schedules (the ones that have pictures of the windows and doors used in the project with a table under each showing window & door numbers, material, framing type etc)? For the assignment I made a bunch of shared parameters then added those to the window and door families and filled out the parameter info for each window or door instance. Then I created a table with labels as an annotation family and linked the labels to the shared parameters I made earlier and then, for each window/door I placed the table underneath and filled out the details. Seemed to work ok but was a fairly manual process. I think that was sort of what I did, it was a couple of weeks ago now. Would you happen to know some nifty tricks to make it more automated or just better? Many thanks Mike George
@miketaylor8211
@miketaylor8211 3 жыл бұрын
Mike, all is well. The KZbin program must have deleted your post with the images.. I never saw it. :) But it sounds really comprehensive. Typically the graphics of a door and frame are separate from the schedules. It sounds fun to combine them and was a good assignment and project. But typically you just tell the door to be a Type A in the schedule and then show a separate diagram of what a Type A door looks like.

🙏 great video! My friend and I are trying to work on a project so we created the central file on her computer and I’m not sure how to open a local copy on mine. She sent me the central file but I’m having issues synching it and I’m not sure how else I’m supposed make a local copy. Is there maybe a certain place I’m supposed to save it on my computer?
@Prem1394
@Prem1394 Жыл бұрын
The moment she sent you a file I'm assuming through Pen drive or mail, it becomes a local file. A central file only works as a central file when both your computers are connected to the same network through LAN, or when you are using cloud based sharing like BIM 360. Otherwise you are both just working on 2 separate files in your own computers.

Hye. i understand the situation to do it.but i got some problem. in my situation i'm the one doing the central file. i'done doing it inside the company server. if i want to make any changes to the model. i knew to open the file & always see the the small box to check/tick to make a new COPY of New local file..but if the other modeller want to open the file on their own pc & make changes on the file which i put it in our server.the other person will se the checkbox for Create new Local is grayed out. so any changes the person made will not appear in our central file. this is the problem & i cant fine solution on it.

What would happen if the person that created the central file is in another country, I mean how would I access to that file? Should that person locates it in a platform like Drive o Dropbox? And should I do download it to my PC and just start to work on it?
@miketaylor8211
@miketaylor8211 2 жыл бұрын
The best way to work with people in another country on a file is to use BIM360. That way it doesn't matter where you are on the planet! You CAN use Dropbox for this. A firm I know has used Dropbox as their online server for a long time.. but BIM360 is the way to go.

we have 12 drafters in one office working on a same project. THAT REALLY should be on Autodesk Construction Cloud. YET< for some ODD reason, its VERY difficult to find a Clean, Clear Comprehensive walk trough, ON Create that NEW folder in the ACC Then, set the Central file to BIM share.. then window pops up.. and folders to chose from.. But, ohh wait, there are NO folders for Current projects, EVEN though I'm admin, and Account Admin. AND I set up a new Project in ACC YET, I do not have a destination to send my .rvt as cloud shared Central. I hope that made sense.

Do you have to be in the same network to collaborate?
@miketaylor8211

Yes. Anyone collaborating needs to be able to have access to the file. VPN works. Or people in the same office. But someone at home would need to LINK to the network from home and then they can collaborate.
